A couple of choice bits from the Slashdot post and TFA:
"Most quantum computers have to be isolated from the outside world (look at them and they stop working)"
"that can carry out 64,000 calculations simultaneously (in parallel "universes"), thanks to a new technique which rethinks the already-uncanny world of quantum computing. But the academic world is taking a wait-and-see approach"
I think I'll take a "wait and see" approach as well....anybody else smell bullshit?
Do they work like that outside because I moved into a new place and up here in Canada it gets really cold and they take a couple minutes sometimes to startup. Normal lightbulbs don't seem to have the same problem in the cold.
shit man don't scare me like that. I've been looking out my window for a week watching for them. They say I wouldn't be so paranoid if they weren't always after me. I mean look out there moonanites on mainstreet. Freaking scary man.
"Latin for a court petition which orders that a person being detained be produced before a judge for a hearing to decide whether the detention is lawful. Habeas corpus is a basic individual right against arbitrary arrest and imprisonment"
are you saying that NASA wants to unlawfully imprison you?
You be crazy brotha. If they had removed the patent would you have even heard about it to say thank god they withdrew their patent? Who knows if they ever have or if they ever will but I doubt you will be posting about it on/. People only have stories where things have gone wrong or horribly right, not when something happens how its suppose to.
Hey I know Joe and he sure as hell doesn't have a sixpack, hes got one big key and is built like the good year blimp. And talking about his infertility like that, I know hes been looking to adopt but hasn't done it yet, why do you have to comment on that. Its not like its his fault that he has to think about it. I don't see your children running around? Its not funny to call him names on slashdot, okay?
Where I live smog is not a problem. My point is, is that their are places where it is a problem. How long before it becomes a global problem?
I don't think you need to nessasarily make any changes to the way you live. Big changes could be made at the industrial level to effect change. I would never say that someone needs to sell their SUV thats only a small drop in the pool. Its when you got smoke stacks that could be cleaner, water that could be safer to drink. These are the things I think need to be fixed. SUV's will probably end up balancing themselves out once oil becomes high enough to make it unfeasable.
What problems do you have with that? Why are you so angry about my view point? I'm not going to hold a knife to anyone and say stop polluting. I'll just stand around and say, hey why not make it better?
Are you saying that because I think we need to look at the other problems with pollution besides global warming and that I believe it should be stopped that it is invalid?
My point was that if we were to take out of the equation the point of global warming there is still many problems that are faced by the way we do things now. These problems of poor air quality, lack of sunlight are seriouse. In some ways as much as the problem with global warming.
Breathing in the air is becomming like locking yourself in your garage and starting the car. It just isn't good for anyone.
My point is that we have a problem down the road with global warming that we could prevent now, but there is an issue now in some of these places with breathing in this air and having it block out the sun.
As well there are many other problems with the way we produce pollutants that water becomes bad to drink, wildlife is effected. We try to prevent these things in some cases, but in others we turn a blind eye. The point I was trying to make was take away global warming. Focus on what the pollution is doing to people and wildlife now, and I would hope you would have reason enough to try and reduce by exploring other ways to produce products and power.
If we were to do more with nuclear power, there is still waste that is created but that can be reduced to a minumum if we were to research it more, it wouldn't hurt the air that we breath and we could keep it localized. There are certain ways you can go about it by reprocessing used nuclear wast to reduce the length of time it is harmfull for 2800+ years to 100+ years. Even if we didn't replace current energy generators with Nuclear because of the Nuclear waste, this would help with current stockpiles in the states. The process is now currently banned in the states, because it could be used to make nuclear bombs.
I'm sure that there are thousands of more ready to go solutions that we as a world could start implementing to reduce the effects that these pollutants not only have on the Ozone but ourselves and the things we consume.
I think people put too much wait on the global warming debate, waiting for one side to cave before anything gets done. We should stop it now. not because of global warming that can be an after thought to be observed if it continues. It should be stopped because of the impending health problems that can incure when you keep the way they are.
I don't think he was saying we should stop sun cycles. Honestly I can't tell if your trying to be funny or not. I think he was saying even if it was the sun cycles we should still curb our emmsisions because its not helping the matter. There are other things to consider when you look at the emissions from industry, look at smog filled cities where it just stinks, or the sun is getting blocked out.
Especially where we are right now where there is no proof that the CO2 Emmsions are not causing the problem. Most people believe they are, the smog isn't helping anyone. There for it would seem logical to you know maybe cut it down a little bit.
So ignoring the leaky basement metaphore I think you missed, emmisions should be cut down regardless. Lack of sun from haze from emmisions can have devistating effects on vegitation which will lead to wildlife. I think one thing we can say is that most of these gasses are trapped in our atmosphere and its causing adverse effects one way or anouther.
you know I totaly forgot that. I had seen a segment on CBC or CTV about that but it must have completely slipped my mind. That makes alot more sense now, but I wonder why it wasn't talked about much more in the summery, I guess it might be that it was common knowledge.
I do think he will have a better chance in Canada. Judges up here seem to have a little more knowledge when it comes to interpreting the internet. Like the mp3 downloading compared to photocopying in a library.
He was obviously joking, I mean how many developers are going to have a girl friend that they are going to have a one night stand with. The whole thing was just leading up to some punch line of some sort.
They get turned off in the US so they move to Canada how is that proving a point instead of moving to Sweden or some other country where it isn't sketchy. Is it that they just got a good offer from Canada or are they trying to jump ship from the states.
Wouldn't a bigger statment be to stay in the states cause that seems ot me what they are trying to do.
It just seems somewhat contradictory to move from the States to Canada and then say we won't move to Sweeden because its too easy?
I think your right, the idea I believe is that a person is developed at a young age not at an older one. Most young girls from my generation were told to play with their easy bake oven and barbies and be more feminem or how ever you spell it. The boys were told to go out and fight play and break things. Dismantling a RC car Radio or other electronics fits more into that. Things like IT just seem more boyish. How would this change if girls were givin the option to go out and blow stuff up just to see how it works instead of the things girls do what ever that may be?
The girls I know who do IT stuff seem a little more like the guys and probably did alot more guy things growing up. The solution is not to have a program tailored to women, the solution is to treat women the same from when they are children and if they choose to do what ever their shouldn't be a problem. I think you would also see more women in IT. On anouther note you don't see that many strait guys going into fasion either;)
The article seems to suggest that the bloggers were posting the articles on where to download the skins as well. Even though this doesn't mean that the blogger was posting this stuff does it mean they should be liable? This sounds familiar to sites that have been shut down for posting links to copyright material like supernova and nzbzone and many others. Does a sign post on the Internet constitute liability for that content? Are these bloggers facilitation the download of copyrighted material in the same manner. I don't think so but I think that so far the proof is pointing in the direction of yes. This is because no one has the money/balls to fight these corporations, I can see why its freaking scary. I hope that it can go to court and be won by the bloggers so that in the future something like this doesn't happen again. In my opinion I think that blogging is as much a form of News as anything. Especially when it comes to technology.
I'm just getting overly tired of these lawsuits where someone says hey look what billies doing its pretty cool, and Tony the Tooth comes over and says shut it down or I'm going to break some legs.
The other point is, is if the Times had printed a screenshot of the images in questions would they be sued? I highly doubt it.
Whoah he might have known about the danger but you would think that the radio station would have consulted a physician and setup the right limits on the people doing the contest. This contest should have been monitored by the station not its listeners. Most radio stations usually over publicise these things and they really arn't what you think they are. He probably thought that they would know the risks or at least do the research and know what not to do. Like kill people. Its like telling people you'll give them 100 dollars to jump off of a bridge. Its sounds way different than bundgy jumping yet you kind of assume there will be a cord attached in either case. If the guy jumped off without the cord thinking that he would be safe its not the persons fault that he didn't say something before hand. Hindsite is 20/20.
It's not Sonys fault because Dell put the battery in their laptop so as a consumer you shoul be able to go to Dell and say replace it. Now Dell bought the batteries from Sony, so then Dell is the consumer of Sony so Sony should have to do something about it. Thats why when they had the battery recall Dell was the one replacing the batteries and Sony was covering part of the costs.
Not entirly true, in some countries copy right is going to expire before the composer is even gone. I believe that some of the beatles early work and the rollings stones as well are going to be outside of that window in a few years because they are in the UK. Now the question you have to ask is should these people no longer be able to profit from their work just because the copy right is up on it? Or should copyright extend 10 years after their death or what? I think copyrite around the world should be reviewed as some composers will never see the profits of some of their music and some would have. In the states I think the term is 99 years(not sure if thats correct but its really long) who does this profit besides 3rd generation of a family and the record lable.
I agree I think by making it a torrent you should understand that you are allowing people to download your content by using others to distribute. You basicly ask them to distribute when you make it a torrent. I don't know how it would play out in court but every way I look at this to me it seems that they are either legally distributing it or they are uploading a fake file. If they are uploading a fake file maybe they are using the IP addresses so that they can find out who you are and get a warrant to check the content of your computer. Either way this is not cool in my books as torrents are not just used for pirating video and it could be confusing or entrapment(if that even works with someone outside of law enforcement). Maybe they are just trying to waist peoples bandwidth like how they upload bad mp3s to places like limewire. all they have to do is release the torrent once it takes off they don't even need to seed it. Besides I don't know why a company has to be policing things like this. I don't see any other industry policing instead of the police except content providers like software, music and video. It doesn't seem to make much sense. This is all very confusing. I'm getting a headache. SOME ONE MAKE SENSE OF THIS FOR ME!? sorry about the caps but someone needs to say it.
they still have wired connectors, you can still hook up a game cube controler to a wii and you can still hook up a PS2 controller to a PS3 I believe.
I believe that the controller connector for the wii is under a plastic plating on the top of it. So even though they use wireless as a standard they do have the connections that are in question. The question you have to ask is if the patent was granted in 2001 why did they wait until 2007 to file a suit? I'm not a lawyer or anything like that I can barly spell so can someone give me an idication as to why. From where I'm sitting it looks like they waited for the next gen consoles to be released the file suit so that they may be in a though spot and settle.
BTW how do you think your going to win against 3 multi milliondollar companies. Maybe they hope to be bought out by one of them.
True but I do believe that according to wikipedia the fire damage had been repaired by November, I'm more curiouse as to where they get the money for all of this stuff was he welthy before taking control of sealand?
can I ask you a question I know you might not answer but I need to know, were you using sata and ata drives together? because if you are grub will automaticly try to boot to the sata drive first and can cause the process to freeze at stage 1.5 like you are explaining if you use just the ata drives and no sata drives or vice versa you will not have the same problems. If you had the ata drive as the boot device you may have had grub trying to boot the sata drive first and it could have been fixed by temporarily disconnecting the sata drive and editing grub from within ubuntu.
You could teach a parrot to ask for rights but that doesn't mean it deserves it any more than a mouse.
The way that it should be determined if the robot should have rights should be if it is sentiant, self aware, and can feel that is being wronged and express it(expressing it only because we need to know its feeling it). I am sure that there are alot more factors in this and if we will ever get to that point will be a long way. But could you imagine a toaster refusing to toast becuase it doesn't like someone sticking in its loaf all the time. IT BURNS. haha anyways I don't think its something we need to worry about anytime soon.
I do technical support for windows systems and I have come accross simular problems with windows machines. Sometimes they are hal.dll missing or corrupt the odd time the drive looks like its failing when its not. What this looks like if your comparing windows to linux(wtf am i doing)is that a sector on the drive could have become corrupt and that when you re-installed windows it could have fixed that sector. I have ran diags on drives and after doing a debug on the drive and re-installing the error went away. This is after it looks like the drive has failed. Just because windows worked on the drive after fixing the computer, doesn't mean that the error is not there. I have also came accross drives that were failing but would let you install windows/copy files to it for months before it died. Assuming from the error that you got in the thread that it couldn't read the problem might have something to do with either of those issues. If you had the same problem with windows I would have got you to boot to the windows OS CD so that I could run a chkdsk on the drive to fix it up. But when someone said that you should do this for linux you freaked out that there was a problem.
The fact is, is that there were solutions out there but when people were asking you NORMAL trouble shooting questions you freaked out because you wanted it to work right then. This isn't normal. I have worked with alot of people and only a handfull of them have ever had an episode like you did, and most were able to calm down and work on the issue. Most of the people you were saying ubuntu is crap to were not techs they were people who installed the OS who enjoyed it and wanted you to have a some joy with it as well. They arn't robots and may not have read that you did not have a burner in the other computer. But on that note did you not have any friends that could not burn the disk for you? Or no computer at work? Also most public libraries have computers with burners. Your lack of trying in this area(or at least you didn't convay it) was one of the reasons why people were no longer helping you.
As for why they wanted to know what OS your were running I don't know why they wanted to know, maybe to see if it was one that ran on an NTFS or FAT system as you could make a boot disk for fat32(which might have been able to help with options) but making one for NTFS isn't as easy.
The reason people are modding you down isn't because you had a problem with ubuntu its because you say this happens to everyone and the few people who helped you were the exceptions. You also state that they were mean or crule to you but most of your ranting has to do with them asking you something more than once or the fact that they wanted to know what OS you were running. So you went to bash the whole ubuntu comunity based on a group of people who were unpaid who did not help you in the way that you did not find acceptable(but was if you have ever been on a forum).
I guess we'll have to wait and smell.
Do they work like that outside because I moved into a new place and up here in Canada it gets really cold and they take a couple minutes sometimes to startup. Normal lightbulbs don't seem to have the same problem in the cold.

"Latin for a court petition which orders that a person being detained be produced before a judge for a hearing to decide whether the detention is lawful. Habeas corpus is a basic individual right against arbitrary arrest and imprisonment"
