Please, people, stop submitting this crap to Slashdot. Go make a blog site dedicated to every little gossipy detail of SCO's legal activities if you want
Depends on the method of download. If you are using BitTorrent, then there is no way there is a legitimate right to distribute, since by using BT, you are sharing the file yourself, and you have not obtained permission to share thusly.
You don't have to, it just makes it easier for people who are afraid of exploring their file system.
I used a self-created installer for Thunderbird 0.5 (using Nullsoft's Installation System), but I still just deleted the directory and used the new installer, skipping the uninstall of the previous version.
Slashdot should, however, ask the site administrator if it is OK to link to them. Bandwidth can cost money, especially if it is metered daily. Slashdot can cost people lots of money with indiscriminate linking.
My woefully (now) underpowered 800mhz Thunderbird with 512mb of PC100 ram can easily browse the web in firefox while IE runs windows update, I can also talk on aim and listen to mp3's at the same time.
Mangled fonts are most likely the result of the writer of the document using a borked TTF font that has no equivalent under *nix, and doesn't tell the application a good alternative.
Ignore Microsoft. Why not make the best interface that can be made? It'll take time but it'll arrive.
What if what you and I think is the "best interface that can be made" are complete polar opposites? There is no single "best interface" since that would be 100% subjective.
Anyone who's concerned about what little DRM Apple has put in the ITMS files can just burn it to an audio cd (on a rewritable disc) and then rip it to MP3. It's what my girlfriend and I do.
(besides, I could never get the win32 version of this program to do anything other than spit out the help file)
heh, that's fine as long as you at least reboot after the chipset drivers, because it's always best to have those installed and working before installing other drivers.
Oh, you mean GrokLaw?

Most hosting setups I've seen are the opposite. Once you go over, you get charges per mb/gb.
well, this is true.
but most slashdotters know how to get around that, so that's only delaying the inevitable.

Why would I compile it when there are binaries available? :P
I don't particularly care for compiling things I don't have to.
I'm lazy.
Says who?

Try again?
Photoshop Elements is priced more towards a home user's point and is selling quite well, thank you.
Photoshop is geared towards professionals, who have either 1) expense accounts or 2) corporate purchasing agreements.

VideoLan client for the mac.
Two words for you: International Waters
I'm not on Orkut, but I'd like to be. :-P
...of Operation Cyberstrike from the early 90's ;/ That one hit close to home, since one of their target bbs's was local to me :(
er, my important passwords are in a text file in My Documents :~(
(now, granted, the text file is double gpg encrypted with two different keys and passphrases...)
For an average cost of 9.99 per cd (some cost more, I'll give you that), plus the cost of a blank?
I'm willing to cope with the convenience.
I could care less about this program.

There was no concept of 'data lines' when most of the current telephone infrastructure was laid out.
Buy your songs, burn them to audio cd, then rip to MP3. That way you get the best of both worlds.

You're not counting the time required to install chipset drivers, updated video drivers, updated sound drivers, etc.
You've obviously never heard the dreaded >crack when you place a heatsink incorrectly on the unprotected Athlon XPs.
Theories can be wrong, as they are generally unproven. Laws can be wrong also, but have stood the test of time.
well, impulse renting at the video store results in stinkers, and a waste of $3-5, depending.
With Netflix, if I get 4 good movies a month, I'm happy, and won't complain about the stinkers.
