wow, so you've just made it so noone can ever send any kind of executable attachment ever again, legitimate or not. yea, that'll make EVERYONE real happy.

Personally, I send myself zip files with executables in them all the time, on purpose, for work-related stuff. Why should I not be able to do that?

This is a problem that cant be solved so simply.

Next you're going to hear about programming languages being developed in other languages. Think outsourcing to india is so great? Wait til your next batch of outsourced code cannot be read, because it's not in english anymore!

One of the things about computing has been the language standardization. Sure, you can do things in other languages, but it's generally been accepted that English is the way to go for things like programming languages and domain names. Granted, this only happened because of the involvement of the US in the creation of the net, but still, it's primarily a Very Good Thing (TM).

Perhaps an international language will come out of this? That would be nice, but I see this as the first step in splintering the internet and the computing world at large.

The primary difference seems to be that a HERF gun simple interferes with electronic equipment, rather than destroying it. The color screen, ok, fine, that's just eye candy.

The polyphonic ringtones... meh, I like music for my ringtones, so it's nice to have it not sound like crap.

The games, however, are a lifesaver for me. Whenever I find myself stuck in an airport for a layover, or just have a few minutes I need to kill and I dont have something better handy, I can load up snake, or bowling, or some other stupid game, and entertain myself for a while.

My experience is through my work. I work for a company that is a contractor for the DoD. We do IT work, Video TeleConferencing (my area), and all other manner of things for them. THIS is where the IT jobs working with the government and military are.

So far (I've only been with this company for a short while yet) everything I've seen leans to the government contracting things like IT work out, and it seems to be a good idea. The contract companies are generally better staffed and equipped to manage the IT needs of such organizations, and do a pretty good job. I think the government is moving this way more and more, in the wake of said "bashing"

but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I, too, have long yearned for a ubiquitous(sp?) encrypted IM standard. I frequently find myself talking to other people who are in places where network traffic is highly monitored (including IM traffic - meaning it is frequently intercepted and read by the IT staff). While I am not doing/saying anything improper or illegal or anything, I dont like being snooped on when I can avoid it. A good encrypted IM standard would help (and yes, I have made all my friends with trillian turn on secureIM, but sadly not all of my friends are smart enough to use trillian and stick to regular old aim).

Modern punks are complicated. There are many many groups of us. The hardcore punks are more or less as you described, but not really goths. Goths have a tendency towards dark makeup, being very pale, and wearing nothing but black. I'm not a hardcore punk. I do have dark hair with random bits of bright red dyed into it, but not in a mohawk. I do dress a bit goth, but I dont do makeup, and I dont do it to be dark, I simply like black. Many of the "goth" punks are still around though.

Anymore, I dont class punks based on what they look like, that's just silly. I base it more on philosophy and musical preference (you know, someone who listens primarily to punk music would probably be a punk).
