People who are untrained and not responsible should not have the right to carry a gun.
I see no reason to outlaw guns. I *DO* however see a reason to outlaw stupid people. I've been shooting since I was 12, and I haven't shot anyone yet. I know I'll teach my children to be responsible around guns when they get older, but right now they're completely out of reach (1000 miles away == out of reach).
There's only 2 reasons to own guns: 1. War (if you're a soldier) 2. hunting
I see no other reason to own one. Self-defense isn't a legitimate answer. Kick your assailant in the balls, run like hell. That'll get you out of most situations much faster than taking 15 seconds to draw your gun, cock it, turn off the safety, and fire. By that time, he'll already be all over you, and you're fucked.
2 words: static webpages. I know for a fact that if my ass was getting slashdotted, I'd be setting up static webpages faster than you can say "holy fucking shit where's my bandwidth?" I personally make a static archive of all my dynamic pages automatically just in case something like that happens. The problem lies in the fact that slashdot doesn't archive sites, nor do they give any type of notice before bringing the hordes of lamers from all over the internet to that site's front door. That's a "bad" thing. I wonder if anyone's brought a lawsuit against slashdot(or their parent company, OSDN) for effectively destroying their servers.
I totally just got a flashback to austin powers there. I don't know why, it just seems apt. Dr. evil and his obsession with "LAYSERS" (yes, I did the quote unquote finger thing when I wrote that). kinda like in the new one where his son gives him the sharks with lasers on their frickin heads. or the laser that he was gonna use to blow up the earth. funny shit.
okay, I know this is a personal thing, but it's iPlanet, not Iplanet, or IPlanet. I used to work there, and it drove me nuts when someone would misspell it.
I'll probably get modded out of commision for this, but I just really get tired of misspellings. Even though I was on the netscape side, and got laid off, I'm still loyal to iPlanet. They gave me my start in the IT world (head Sysadmin for iPlanet Learning Solutions), and I can't thank them enough for it.
Now, it's been what, a month and a half or so since it went public?
Nobody took it seriously then, and being as 2 out of the 3 companies involved in it are royally fucked, I don't know why this is such a surprise.
SCO>Caldera>SCO is fucked, turbolinux is *REALLY* fucked, and conectiva (which makes a great distribution, but I don't know anyone who actually uses it) is insignificant.
Unitedlinux was just a ploy to get stock prices driven back up. Obviously it didn't work. The market's smarter than that nowadays, after the "let's give 9 million dollars of VC money to shitonastick.com" tech bubble of the late 90's/very early 00's.
There's a pool going between my group of friends about when VA Ice Cream and Adult Novelties is going to be delisted. I call it VA Ice cream and Adult novelties because they've changed their business plan about 5 times in the last 4 years. Even their CEO bailed out (smart move there, larry. Hope you like that zaurus you put on your corporate american express platinum credit card at linuxworld nyc 2002. I was right behind you in line, and saw it, don't deny it. I'm glad you're still making 200+ grand a year, while most of the developers you brought on who worked for you are now either unemployed, or working at mcdonald's).
I guess I'm just trolling, but whatever. I'm just tired of people thinking that spin-doctoring bad ideas, throwing up lots of press releases, and *STILL* working off of bad business models will make everything okay.
here's a hint for those who think that spin-doctoring a bad business model will make everything okay: IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK, THE MARKET IS SMARTER THAN THAT!!!
Anyhow, enough trolling from me. Later.
Forgive the trolling, but this has to be said

Jesus christ, do you think the router's there just to look at?
I don't know, but I've been listening to this debate for a while.
I can tell you one thing, and this is just my opinion: Most of the music that's been put out in the industry in the last 3 years has been absolute shit. I think pretty much everyone can agree that the shit-to-good-music ratio has definitely changed. I *RARELY* buy cd's. I also go to live events. mostly because of the fact I'm in the electronic music culture, and it's easy to find (at least in the bay area, california) good djs playing good songs. I turn on MTV, and I'm almost offended of all the absolute crap I see. All these polished, produced, bubble gum pop groups, who, in my opinion, suck hardcore ass. It sucks, alot.
I also don't "steal mp3's". I've got better things to do with my time than go out and try to download some song off of a website that'll probably only be up for about a week before being shut down by the RIAA. I used to use napster, but it was to listen to albums so I could judge whether I wanted to buy them or not. When napster was still around, the music wasn't *QUITE* as shitty as it is now.
Anyhow, that's just my rant. I'm going to an "electronic music concert"(read: a real rave, bolt cutters and all) here in a few minutes. I'm going to spend my time this weekend listening to great music, and hanging out with great people.
I worked on the west coast with the Netscape Learning webcast group. We handled at one time, about 15,000 users. there's realserver drops all over the country on AOL's backbones. It was really fun watching the machines that were hosting our irc server and web servers (for Q&A) hit a load of 100% in about 20 minutes:P
Netscape's source was *NEVER* trashed. Trust me, i still have a CD of the sources and binaries of EVERY version of netscape ever in my cube. They've got a little dried mountain dew on them (loan, if you ever read this, please don't kill me, i tried to get as much off as I could:( ) from a spill I had a few months back.
I can't comment on AOL 8.0, since I enjoy working on the client product release engineering team at netscape. I can probably state (which is common knowledge by now) that AOL was impressed with how gecko handled alongside IE.
BTW, The Gecko engine is made to be embedded, in case you haven't noticed that already.
Anyhow, lots of really cool stuff is gonna happen within the next 6-8 months, with Mozilla, Netscape, Compuserve, and AOL.
That's great, but that won't put food in my 11-month old daughter's mouth, clothes on her back, nor a roof over her head, will it?
Of course, since I have such *WONDERFUL* Open-source programs, everything's gonna be peachy.
Not to sound like a troll, but time == money. I really don't have the luxury to volunteer my time to software projects anymore. Almost every project I've worked on and attempted to put volunteer time into ends up either really pissing me off, or ends up shooting itself in the foot (stampede anyone?).
Unless I get paid to work on something, so I can raise my family, then I don't want to hear a thing from you about it. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally for people who can afford to give up their time to write open-source software. I work on Mozilla for christ's sake (I'm a netscape employee). I love working on the project, but I guarantee you, if I weren't getting paid to do it, I wouldn't. Now, this is an ideal situation, because I get to work with lots of cool people from the community. But, if it came between open source and feeding my family, I would choose to feed my family, thanks.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't find people who make fun of this amusing whatsoever. I lived in nome for 5 years (which is on the mainland, by shishmaref). I never saw any real global warming stuff going on, but I do know that having to move a whole town off the island is going to be *EXTREMELY* detrimental. I loved alaska, but hated it at the same time. For fuck's sake, they're voting on moving EVERYONE off the island, and onto the mainland, giving up their homes, their jobs, everything. Fucking quit making it out to be a joke, it's not funny. What if everyone in your neighborhood had to move because some corporation bought the entire block, and you didn't get a cent of it. Would you appreciate it if everyone fucking laughed at you? didn't think so. Show some respect for christ's sake. Back off, seriously.
Being as he hasn't worked at netscape for about 3 years, and since then has started a startup with little to nothing going for it other than "OOH!! IT'S MARCA FROM NETSCAPE!!!" I personally think it's complete bunk.
I bet a lot of the people who didn't quit, and still work at netscape feel the same way. I really don't have much of a view on the subject, as I joined the company almost 1 year to the day after they got bought by AOL.
On top of that, I seem to have become the unofficial netscape-flag holding troll on here.
Christ, I dunno, I take a lot of pride in my work at the company, and when he goes and says shit like this, it honestly feels like a kick in the balls to me, and to everyone who is still working on the browser. Fuck, I work with 5 people on my team (out of 9) who were around back before AOL bought the company. he just pretty much slapped them in the face.
