    Sounds like your school found a viable purpose for such an article, and as part of your education I assume you (or someone else) is paying for, it is being commercially used. Did you professor violate copyright in handing it out, or did he actually pay for the rights to use it?

    Actually, IE's market share is closer to 85% and falling. The days of 90%+ market share are over and usage will continue to decline. That is, unless MS comes up with something considerably better than what they have (even with the IE7 improvements).

    Must not be, since it's in South African Rand's, not Rupees. It would be about 8.68 million Rupees.

    All execs that i know of have no competes. Pepsi can't simply go farm execs out of coke. We are talking about regular employees, we are talking about executives.

    It's not limited to execs. I have a non-compete and I assure you that I'm not an exec.

    Actually, there are GPS recievers that DO come with compasses (magnetic ones), though they are typically on the higher end ones.

    Companies are always quick to blame the 'hackers' when something bad happens. What they need to do is look inside first at themselves. Besides the fact that the vast majority of damage done to company computers is an inside job, most of the external damage (caused by worms and viruses, etc) is caused by people not patching vulnerable systems or having a poor network setup. The virus/worm writers certainly aren't innocent, but a lot of the companies are as guilty for not doing what they need to to defend against such attacks.

    I must say though, posting a donation link on the slashdot main page is a tad bit of advertising for my taste, even if the project is good (which it appears to be)

    It's just an example, you can't donate to it anymore as it closed back on 6/21.

    Except that LinuxFund is pretty much dead. The money there is in limbo. Notice the last update to the site was almost a year ago (July 30, 2004).

    Jumping to conclusions can do that kind of thing. As was said in the summary, "Analysts said Microsoft would probably be most interested in the long-term potential of Claria's personalization software rather than its pop-up ads." MS's ownership of the company may be a great thing. They can take use of the personalization software and shut down all the crap adware and pop-ups.

    Actually, this is more related to the value of the dollar. In theory, the 1 Euro ~ 1 Dollar, or at least that's what the plan was. That's not how the markets are working, but that's how the pricing is working. While the dollar was higher than the euro, the advantage was on the other side of the ocean.

    In a corproate environment, unless you make an effort to hide who installed the software, it's typically pretty easy to figure it out. When it comes down to it, you're company's going to blame you anyway and claim ignorance. If you have it in writing, they can't get away with that.

    An apt analogy. However...

    So a precedent in copyright has been established: let's extend the lifetime in the US. Now comes the pressure behind the wedge: the europeans want it too!

    The Europeans want it as much as the Americans...which is that they don't. The music and movie industries want it. And there's not a whole lot of "US and EU" there, they're all pretty united into screwing the world equally. They just have to get each "nation" to help them out a bit.
