Great and in a few years what happened to grandfather can happen to someone else. He was president of the Farm Equipment Union in the 50's. When the United Auto Workers Union came in and wanted his members. They threatened his life, said he was a communist and harrased my dad and his brother on the way to school. The family had to move out of state. Getting bricks through your windows tends to ruin dinner. Unions stopped serving their pupose a long time ago. Anyway working in an air contioned office is a hell of a difference from working in a factory where you can be mamed or killed. I do not see too many people being chewed up by the laser printer.

  13. The real problem on The "Glory" Of Tech Support · · Score: 1

The prolem with Telco's getting into the ISP business is they try to run it like a telco and it just does not work. The most important thing in a call center is not if you actually helped someone, but how long you had them on the phone for. Call stats are all manglement cares about when it comes to the day to day operations at a call center. I was fortunate to leave the ISP I worked for before the telco that bought them started enforcing their policies.

(there is a Gateway Country in town and yes it is a small town) They alwyas had problems that were OEM problems. They suck the modems they use the motherboards and all of their components just plain suck. Just because the price is top of the line does not mean the computer is.

I work for an ISP in an area where Bell Atlantic is one of the local carriers. Outside the county you can have an extended local calling area for around 15 bucks a month. AT&T was involved in this somehow and made our customers pay long distance charges. For what should have been a local call. Only thing was is AT&T told them it was our fault. That was not a happy month for us. You may try calling the FCC, I think they have a # for unfair practices (sorry I dont have it handy).

This can be a big pain in the ass. Also make sure the house is wired with breakers not fuses (my last house was and that really sucked). On the upside we dont have to heat our house in the winter, so there are good things about it.
