Talk about giving fans the chance to finish off where the developers left off. This is pretty darn neat, granted the disks still function, as they said, the disks may not even work after 20 years.
I'd LOVE to see this happen with Ultima 8's lost expansion
(The Lost Vale). It would be soo neat if EA released the old code for that expansion since it never got completed, as the community would be far more than willing to complete it. Please EA? huh? huh?:)
Doh! ment to add in there, that I am assuming that they are using Google's engine and haven't gotten everything switched over to their own yet (cache included). I didn't RTFA, so again I am only guessing.
Bring headphones and keep the volume down if you have to have sound.
Woohoo! Where do you host your lan parties? From the sound of it, you guys don't like to use sound at your lan parties, but you'll tolorate those who do. Mind if I join? I promise I won't use the sound to my advantage *that* much;)
What we really haven't seen here is what their true goals are with this stuff. Their true goal? taking towel companys out of business!
Just think of the millions people would save in towel expenses every year by showering/swimming with this stuff!
Hahahahah! thats it I'm dropping all my stocks in the towel companys and putting it in this! I see the future, and towels paper or cloth are not a part of it! Begone things of the past!
Can we really trust closed-source vendors, such as Cisco, to develop secure products that are free of backdoors?
Gimmie a break, they likly made a mistake, and you never have? They admited it and have issued an advisory (mind you it looks worse if found out by the public later on, which may be the case this time as I didn't rtfa). In a case like this I'd return the product if I couldn't remove the uid and pass. "Sorry, its got a major problem with it, I don't want it". Simple as that.
Simple. Look at the pain and the agony that PC game programmers have to go through with respect to compaints about fps, bugs, crashes, incompatible hardware. Blech! This is why there are so many console systems in the first place. A contained environment is simple to program for. Just look at the Mac. Not to mention the royalties from the games, which is also a huge cash cow (brands, dev seats, licenses, logos, sometimes production, etc..).
MS went the simple route, got some cheap ass, pretty basic more or less off the shelf parts and put together a system that would run WinCE (I know other platforms are supported).
Why go the route of headaches? They already have a ton of games on the PC space, but nothing in the console space, where royalties abound and games are made in a week by the dozen.
That being said I hate console games and I will always be a PC gamer, but hey thats me and thats another argument for later.
Ultima 7, and Ultima 7 part 2. There is already a Super Nintendo version of U7, just needs to be ported to the GBA, common PLEASE someone port Ultima 7.
"Thanks! I appreciate that you did this for the fans out there who loved the game and for those who now have a chance to play it."
The bottom line is, they didn't have to do this. They don't have to release the source. Its their stuff, they decide to offer it for free, don't complain, or if you do, offer some form of thanks or positive feedback as well. As all your doing is slaping them in the face. If I worked for Bethesda, and read your comment (which I am sure they do read slashdot) I would feel insulted. As they really are not getting much (if any) financial gain from doing this. They might sell a few more copies of Morrowind, or Sea Dogs/Pirates of the Caribbean, but the time spent on putting this together, would easily cost more than what they'll get back. If they were out for financial gain, they would have released this for free when Morrowind was just out.
Thanks Bethesa, you guys have done a great job with Morrowind (also bought Bloodmoon and Tribunal, and the clue book thank God), and I appreciate you giving me the chance to play Arena.
Lets blow each other up. When will we realize that we don't need to do this crap and stop feeding our public fud regarding other cultures. Oh and the argument that we need this for protection is bullshit. God I hate this shit, just makes my stomach turn.
I always found Ultima music to be top notch, mind you it required a decent midi enabled soundcard (Roland MT32), which was one of the best midi cards out there. Music has a huge potential to make or break the game, if the music is too repetative the player turns it off (if possible), same if it is too annoying. Turning off the sound is also not an option (you would them miss out on all the snd efx). A game without music that suits the setting can really ruin the experience as well.
Looking through the article, it reminds me how some of the games did such an amazing job on the music with the technology that it had at the time.
Not saying that this is limited to Canada. WTO screws everyone equally.(Take this with a grain of salt, as it does come from the Anti-Globalisation Network.)
License smicense! anything they would get from license deals would be a drop in the pot compared to what they'll get from lawsuits. Haven't you heard? lawsuits is where the money is.
An avid fan of the game (PP), however the description that IGF gave Puzzle Pirates was leaving me question wether or not I missed an island of debauchery or something like that.
A player-driven economy, hot pirate on pirate action, and political intrigue fill out this....
Besides, you american's always spend too much on these sort of things. Check out the Canadian 12 days-o-Christmas. I promise you it will cost FAR less, and if you pay in American $, you'll have spent basicly pocket change!
You should probably re-read my post, as I never stated "drvers" anywhere. I did said "Matrox", however, software developers at Matrox do other stuff other than just write drivers. There are software utilities that they have, and applications, digital video editing, etc... Visit their website before you start posting responses.
Get another type of programming job. They are not allowed to work for a company that does competing work (games). Then go work for Matrox, they are in Montreal, work for any other software company that doesn't do games, and they won't be breaking the contract. Also you can say that what if their skills are focused in games, well that is their problem if they don't keep their skillset open enough to be able to take other jobs. This isn't really that big of a problem. At worst they have to work at a job that they dislike for a year, but if it pays the bills, quit complaining.
"Gone Gold" is an expression used to state that the game has been finished and is shipped to the game copy guys and will be on the shelves in a few days/weeks.

Well here's the google cache for it...
Take that!
Hmmm I was going to be funny for a second, but then I tried a9's cache of googles site and got this
Seems that they are using Google's cache, and simply re-directing users to Google.
Meh, I guess thats what a beta is all about.
Hahahah! That guy is funny, you moderators should mod him up!

These guys here have great products and ship all over.

Good job folks
I really don't think that Google can get /.'ed can it?
Well just in case, here is the cache for it.
When they start to threaten your public education and agriculture exports then lets talk.

The WTO is a bad idea gone bad.

Thats what I'm going to do when I grow up!

and grabbed the QNX "Launch" menu...
In any case I rather like the looks of it. Looking forward to seeing how it performs.
Articles that talk about the DRM stuff that was here in the past...
MS and Phoenix
Phoenix to incorporate DRM
Thanks Phoenix for helping me make my descision. AMI here I come. BTW, Award BIOS are made by Phoenix, so watch out.
Unless you get laid off, its not a good idea to leave your current job until you have another one lined up.

My brother learned to play online role playing games while he was learning to read and write.
What books taught him to read 5hiT lik3 +H15?
