  1. Commander Riker syndrome on Consequences of Turning Down a Promotion? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Go watch The Best of Both Worlds parts 1 and 2.

Commander William T. Riker turns down another promotion, a captaincy on another starship. He turns it down because the Enterprise is the best ship in the fleet, he's doing some great work there, and he is comfortable with where he is. But when Commander Shelby comes gunning for his choice position... he has to think about why he's choosing to stay in the same place for such a long time.

Admiral Hanson: "This is the third time we've pulled out the captain's chair for Riker.
    He just won't sit down."

Shelby: All you know how to do is play it safe. I suppose that's why someone like you sits in the shadow of a great man for as long as you have, passing up one command after another. (To the turbolift computer) Proceed to deck 8.
Riker: When it comes to this ship and this crew, you bet I play it safe.
Shelby: If you can't make the big decisions, Commander, I suggest you make way for someone who can.

Picard: "Will, what the hell are you still doing here?"
    ...
Picard: "Will, you're ready to work without a net. You're ready to take command. And you know, the Enterprise will go on just fine without you."

Now, Riker stayed as 'second bananna' on the Enterprise, and did some truly great things... but eventually he did have to move on. He knew he couldn't stay on the Enterprise forever, and finally accepted a command of his own. The USS Titan.

Riker decided that he should stay on the Enterprise for all the reasons you've stated you might want to stay where you are. But he was able to take a step back, and realize that at some point... he had to move on. He had spent half his career in the same position, and had to move onto different things. He had to leave, or else stagnate.

Some stuff to think about, I guess.

  2. Critical hour after your head hits pillow on Computers/Keyboards + Dorm Room = No Zzzzzz? · · Score: 1

I was in NROTC, so I WAS driven up the wall by my roommate's keyboard and mouse clicks on a regular basis, because I had to wake up at 5:30am every morning, and my roommate didn't have class until 10am or so.

Anyways, the best way around this is to have your roommate evacuate the room for the hour around your bedtime. You go to bed and say "Shoot, it's time for bed."

Your roomate should reply: "Okay, I'll go take my math book and work problems for an hour".

It's only critical that you have silence in the time that it takes you to actually fall asleep. It depends on your depth of sleep, but my dorm roommate has had friends over (quietly), played computer games, soft music, typed papers, and it didn't disturb me in the least. As long as your roommate is quiet around the hour when your head hits the pillow, you will be okay.

You can say: "Oh, no, don't worry, i'm pretty tired and will be asleep within moments."

Or you can say: "Yeah, that would be awesome. I've got to get up in 6 hours and I'm not tired in the slightest."

If the period of time elapses, and your roommate returns... just pretend to be asleep. That will make you fall asleep faster than anything else in the world.

And if all else fails, and your roommate is an asshole... just remember that you can be as fucking loud as you want in the morning. Have your other ROTC buddy who wakes up at 6am knock on your door as loud as a motherfucker, or slam the door when you go to shower, or just be as loud as you fucking can. Get revernge on your sonofabitch roommate who refuses to give you a little space when you want to hit the sack.

On the other hand, if your roommate goes out of his/her way to give you space at sleeptime, and is a generally nice guy about letting you get to sleep before making much noise... give the dude a break. If your roommate is a nice guy, and so are you... you will be pals forever, no matter what.

If you are all passive/agressive towards each other, you will have no greater enemy

Words of wisdom from one who knows.

  3. It's all in the angle on Carpal Tunnel- Laptops Better than Ergo Keyboards? · · Score: 1

I always suffered from sore wrists and such on regular keyboards, but I have been using a laptop almost exclusively for a year and a half and I am just dandy.

It's all in the angle... or at least that's my guess. It seems that most of my hand's weight is actually supported by the elbow-wards part of my forearm. My hand also supports some of the weight, but almost all of it on the lower palm... so my wrist really doesn't support my weight at all. And with the palm and elbow-wards forearm being pretty sturdy next to the naked, uncushioned underwrist, I don't suffer any ill effects.

Don't get a laptop case, laptop backpack, or anything like that. If you do that, your precious laptop is a thousand times more likely to get stolen.

Instead, get a decent backpack meant for carrying books and binders and the like. If that does not offer enough impact protection... just find some soft foam and stick it in there.

It will cost less than a fancy laptop bag, and it won't get stolen.

  9. Iraqi leader playing cards on Jenkins On War And Videogames · · Score: 4, Insightful

why has there been so little public outrage over the use of playing cards as a way of representing the search for and capture of Iraqi leaders?

Because the whole idea behind the deck of cards... was that US troops would carry them around, play games with them in their spare time, and memorize the faces of these guys so that if they happened to spot them... they could nab them.

The media really latched onto the idea, but the original purpose was to promote awareness among the troops of what they should be on the lookout for. NOT some crazy Right-wing warmongering wargasmic ploy. THAT is why there has been no public outrage.

Agree with most of the other stuff he says, though.

  15. A Tale in the Desert is cool! But... on A Tale In The Desert's Social Evolution Examined · · Score: 4, Interesting

It's not a lot of fun. Conceptually, I was enthralled by the notion of the players creating and backing their own currency. Passing their own laws. Working together to accomplish a goal. Truly, these are things that hint at what wonders MMOGs could truly be!!

So I payed my 13 bucks. I played for two weeks, and all I did was make bricks, run around, click on a bunch of trees, and 'farm' flax plants by repeatedly clicking on the ground. A Tale in the Desert SOUNDS really freaking neat, but I don't get off on doing the job of a peon or peasant in Warcraft.

Seriously, these are things though that I would love to see in a game that's actually fun to play.

f its so overrated, then why can used game stores still charge 50 bucks for it?
I think the fact that it IS popular, even though it's a ho-hum game is the primary indicator of its Overrated-ness. As mentioned elsewhere, its price is only a reflection of economic factors, not on its quality as a game. It's overrated by the people who buy it. : )

  17. Re:Who the hell do they think they are... on Black & White - Most Overrated Game Ever? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Amen! I think halfway through they got confused if they were making a pre-release hype list or a post-release overrated list. BC3KAD was DEFINATELY hyped like crazy, and sounded awesome. But the publisher forced a shit release, so it was panned in the reviews.

I don't mind Gamespy doing lists like these so much... they're kind of interesting. I mean, they often have completely WRONG opinions, but at least it's interesting.

I played the Starfleet Commands. Solid B minus in my book for the series. They're spending too much time reading fanboy forums. Read the fanboy forums for any cult game, and you'll come to the same conclusion.

Seriously. Why don't YOU do stories like these, games.slashdot? Ask us to vote for our favorite or overrated games or something, and post the results. You could SO do it, and it would be better than Gamespy, because I actually respect my fellow Slashdot gamer's opinions.

I mean why would someone highly interested in software (with a Software Engineering degree) do CCNA?

The only way that having a CCNA could HURT you, is if you're applying for some crack elite software team or something, where distractions would be frowned upon.

But in the rest of the world, I would bet money that a small business would LOVE it if they hired a new software guy onto their small team, who could help out with networking. The larger the employer, the more specialized jobs will become. This will do nothing but help if you seek employment with a business or agency with a smaller team of tech-people.

Why did Microsoft force Bungie to sit on the PC release for so long? I'm surprised they didn't wait until Halo 2 had been out for a while, just to make this release even more pointless.

It was pretty sad. I watched my PC gamer buddy, who was a huge fan of Marathon back when he had a Mac, follow Halo from the time it was announced. When it looked like it was going to be a Mac game, he thought about getting a new Mac. And when Microsoft did the money thing and made it an X-Box exclusive... guess who shelled out for the console and just one game?
