So far, I've seen all these posts decrying the want for those with disabilities and people of color to sign up for junkyard wars. Its making me sick. I for one, am a person of color, and it would be nice to occaisionally see someone on there who is not pasty white. Nothing wrong with caucasian individuals, but a splash of color every now and again would be good. I am entering myself, and I'm sure that them seeing hte video with me on it may help a bit, but i"ll probably get passed over.
You know what else? I also have a disability, and am apart of hte growing amount of identified geeks out there who have been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Probably won't make for good TV, but fuck it....I had to get it off my chest.
I'm sick of all these fucking jokes about lesbian builders. This is serious!
You are definately right. I recall back in my High School days, there were a fleet of shiny new 600mhz dell machines put in, loaded with Fortres 4.0 on them. The previous machines ran 3.0, which was no challenge to disble, but 4.0 was not. To make matters worse, one of the sys admins who set it up used draconian measures which made computer usage for both teachers and students laborious to say the least.
Fortres 4.0 is not an easy beast to kill, but there was at the time when I was playing with it, an active community devoted to hacking it. There was sourcecode to a program written in Visual Basic, which is present in many computer labs to rip the Appmgr.set and Fortres.F4 file from memory. Those two files needed to be copied in order to hack it. After that, being handy with softice and you could decrypt the password from those two files. At the time, I was not, so I had a friend do it for me.
After having the fortres password, I did what any self-respecting high school geek would do. Play games! I installed emulators and roms all over the network, and used it as a personal arcade for a while. I kept in good graces with my teachers by using my powers for good by installing printers, and chaning resolutions and the like to accomodate them, when the real sysadmin was busy. I installed a few text logging programs on some high traffic machiens, and did glean some useful passwords, but did not use them out of fear.
Eventually, I was caught, but after helping the teachers out so much, they came to my aid. I was banned from the computer network for the rest of the year and my games deleted, but I avoided prosecution.
Thats really funny, but its starting to become a problem. For owners of a Creative Sound Blaster Live! or Audigy system, the new DRM enabled drivers will actually mute the digital channel output upon playing certain DRM equipped files. That $600 digital decoder based 5.1 DD system is useless when you want to listen to a DRM encoded WMA song.
Why buy a PC as a media station when you can buy a stereo?
My PC is my media station, because i live in a dorm room where space is at a premium. Surround sounds setups don't crowd the desk either, because most speakers for these systems are either mean to be wall or floor mounted. THe only thing taking up space on your desk is the decoder box and possibly the center channel. Also, in my case, the monitor is clearly larger than my TV. I prefer a crappy 19" over 13" any day. Also, how many Stero systems do you know of that will play MP3s, OGGs, WMF, DiVx in any flavor, and quicktimes? Not only that, but with Vivo you can hook up your game systems and have everything integrated.
In terms of versatility, there is no "true" stereo setup that can match a PC right now. It may not be pretty, and it has its fair share of PC quirks, but when space is a premium and you want semi-cheap versatility, give me a good PC with a nice sound and video setup anyday.
I know its been done before, but I couldn't resist

I find this all very intersting that Nintendo is trying to turn the GBA into a PDA when someone else has already done it.
Enter, the Songpro It was released a few years ago on the original Gameboy and piggy backed off of the unit to play MP3s and display song titles and lyrics on the screen, but an improved version has come out on the GBA. I have listened to one of these units, they use Sandisk media and will accomodate up to the full 512mb cards.
I attended an African American Technology fair and was able to try out one of these units. I witnessed FMV on the GBA, MP3 music and lyrics, an odd form of e-book that contained biblical scriptures, and a digital stamp collection. The engineers behind this tech were light on details when I questioned them, but he did mention that the unit has its own DSP for sound and some video, and that some of the the work is done by the GBA's own processor. It apparently is written in ARM C,but that was all he would mention. If some research is done, recall that in a previous life, this device was called the Songboy and Nintendo sued. With the help of jesse jackson they were able to get out of this jam and market a wonderful product. IT may not be a full PDA, but it is cheap and will turn the GBA into a cheap IPOD with a large enough Sandisk.
Virtual boy seemed like a good game at the time, but what annoyed me the most about it was that it missed the one game that the format would've been most successful at: First person shooters. A viewing eye system such as that is simply begging for a good FPS title. Where were they? I would've killed for a decent doom or wolfenstein title on that system even if the game were in black & red. Make it color & head mounted, and I'll buy one today!
Only thing that bothers me about this whole thing is that they supposedly say that file swapping is analgous to stealing, yet it carries a higher punishment. If I shoplift, I am not fined for 250k. What is wrong with this picture? If stealin is stealin, then punish people accordingly. I am not charged 250k if I go into a store and copy a magazine.
Oh yes, you are sooo right. I've got an APC system modified and installed in my Volvo 740 Turbo. Extremely easy to install. Only needs power, tach signal, and the hookups it came with. It listens for knock and will open the wastegate and drain off boost in 1.5 psi increments.
They actually improved on the design three years later with the 86 box. I'm not sure what the differences are other than improved knock detection (I heard).
However, it the 83-85 box only has 14 pins, while the 86+ box has 25. Also, it may seem to tie into the braking system as I have seen on some diagrams. Anyway, it is an awesome system and very quick. You've got 3 Pots on there that control boost, frequency of boost and knock detection. There is a whole community dedicated to tweaking these lil machines. Defintaley worth the the time spent on install to any speed demon without a lot of money.
Yea, I also use my spare cycles for heat. 1900 Athlon XP oc'd to 2100 during the cold winter months. the thermaltake does an adequate job of cooling, but when the house temp is at 40 degrees, I have to keep warm. I turn down the RPM on my cpu fan, kick up the fsb and crack the case open. After a few heavy sessions of UT2k3, I can have the room at a comfy 65-70 degrees. Not so annoying to me.
I've been to walmart many times and have found M rated games right on the shelf. I think you meant to say the fact that they only carry music with censored lyrics is hypocritical when they sell firearms in the same store.
If you don't believe me, take a look at this and this . Oh yes, they carry M rated games. Its just odd that they carry M rated games and R rated movies, but no explicit music.
"$20 for a movie with optional commentary, deleted scenes, wide and narrow screen formats, and choice of captions is worth it. $15 for 60 minutes of audio- only music is not."
Ha! wrong again. Your saying a $15 CD with 60 minutes of audio. It costs more like $20. I recently patronized the RIAA against my better judgement this Christmas season, and the new release CDs cost $19.99. YOu are right though, that the MPAA tends to give more value per dollar for its products though. DVDs also go down in price as well. YOu can purchase a great many $7.99 DVDs of older movies at store racks now. Yet another reason as to why the RIAA is a bloated cartel. Not taht the MPAA isn't, but at least they handle their bloat in a better manner.
"give the consumers something they're willing to go to the theaters and watch! give them something they're willing to spend their 15-20$ to buy the dvd rather than spending 30 minutes copying it. i don't see that hapening anytime soon though"
I disagree. Generally they do put out some decent stuff. I think what is happening is that they do not want to suffer the same fate as the RIAA. This year was the biggest year of profits since the 1930's for the MPAA. They racked up 1+ billion dollars more than they normally do, so they have no claims of lost profits like the RIAA can. They also have found a runaway success in the easily crackable yet still preferably bought DVD medium. While people can download movies from the net, most prefer to go out and spend $8.99 for that two year old movie that they want to have on DVD. Rental services such as netflix (my only real vice) are a runaway success, and I will admit, I have yet to rip and copy any of my DVDs because its too much trouble.
These guys just see the handwriting on the wall and want to nip it in the bud. I personally don't think its right that they are trying to infringe on our fairuse rights, but at least they are being more cooperative than the RIAA. They have taken the first tenative steps into online distribution that while faulty, is more than I can say for their musical cartel cousins.
Someone needs to drag out all the stops in this case. i don't like the idea of having such a wide jurisdiction when sueing somebody, but for f#ck sakes, get Felten in there. Try and make the idea of playing DVDs on linux look like something regular folks do and not something that "hackers do". Show them that we only want the same rights and abilities that we had in the analog world, and that the powers that be are trying to strip them from us. If only the defense of Pavlovich/EFF could have an ask slashdot session could I truly think they would come up with a decent defense.
I could see it now.....

ironically enough, the N64 did. The N64 had upgradeable ram and it was Rambus. It had RAMBUS R-Dram hitting an amazing 500mhz way back in 1996.

Now what would be really ironic is if the number crunching done to crack the code were to be done by a beowulf cluster of x-boxen
FUD Alert! FUD Alert. I smell a lie.

Just as long as they keep Whoopi Goldberg away from it, I'll be ok.
"2) a DX9 compat. card can be had without forking over a majority of my month's paycheck"
Yea and by that time, you'll have one and want a card that is DX 11 or DX 12 compliant that won't cost a month's paycheck.
"You've got it backwards... DirectX doesn't support cars, cards support DirectX (hereafter, "DX")"
Well in Soviet Russia, Direct X supports the cards.
