Thats pretty funny that you mention that, because I was a pimply-faced teenager working at an electronics store. I used to work at radio Shack and we took imprints of credit cards that gave ample oppurtunity to copy them. Well, we used to place ours in a large bucket that was handed to the manager at the end of the day. In the six months of my employ, we never had any dealings in credit card fraud. We were simply too busy to copy numbers down, but the idea did cross my mind a few times. We did have an incident involving fraud, but it was from an outside source.
as much promise as hybrid cars hold in terms of fuel economy and reduced emissions, current technology is better. The volkswagen Lupo gets well over 50mpg, has superior acceleration over its hybrid cousins and runs on diesel, though its desulfered and only available in europe.
Screw making faster CDrom drives, these would make awesome weapons. Imagine having an arsenal of AOL cds spinning at 28,000 RPM. When they explode, they would shower people in shrapnel. We've entered a new age of war.
Thats very true. Pioneer had a technology called True-X a few years ago that did just that. They used a special lens to multiply their laser seven times so the drive was 7 times faster. Then they just had several reflectors so that it went back to the pickup. It was very nice because you had a drive that was very quiet, had very little vibration, was actually faster than its 42x advertised speed and you didn't have to wait for the speed to pickup when the drive was reading the inner portion of the disc. Sadly, the technology is only limited to cd readers only. There were no burners or DVDs made using this very cool method.
I recently purchased an ATI AIW 7500 to go along with my Athlon XP 1900 and at first I was feeling bad. A hardware encoder that goes straight to MPEG 2? I was kind of pissed, becauset the ATI was only software. Well, I feel a little better now. The Ati supports more formats, does dual displays and plays games pretty well.
A little idea I've been toying with is the idea that software should share the "ecosystem" of any us invention. We do have trade secrets and everything, but once the secret is out, your SOL. HOw about we create a patent for software? You patent your source code meaning that you must submit it to the US patent office for all to see. Once its submitted, anyone may look at it but no one else may use it for profit for the duration of the patent. A little like GPL, but with a twist.
The Virtual Child Pornography bill that was proposed had much farther reaching effects other than just making realistic CGI kiddies. One of the things that it planned to outlaw was actors portraying characters under legal age engaging in sexual acts. Obviously, the broad wording could be used to restrict art very easily. Movie scenes such as the love scene in traffic come to mind. Another thing that it would outlaw is illustrations of people who appeared under age engaging in sexual acts. This includes hentai, to all you hentai fans out there and a conservative politician could possibly outlaw anime. Because the wording was so broad in this, it could really screw up the artistic process. "Sexual acts" can range from kissing and maybe touching, to full out intercourse. Definately a far reaching law that I am glad was not passed.
hrm, the statement that kids can't tell the difference between advertising and content is very true. My 11 year old kid brother has a problem, or should I say I have a problem with this. He likes to go the fansites like da black goku, dragonballz.dk etc, but they shoot many a popup and flash at you. He clicks and the next thing you know, "Enlarge your penis" "Fine Pissing Girls", "Britney Spears Nude!". Dialers are downloaded and the homepage is changed, and my tcp stack is fscked. I have to ad aware my system, run window washer and go through it with a fin toothed comb looking at all my directories after he surfs. Worst thing though is that the dialers are not compatible with the dsl modem I've got, so they usually kill the connection. Until I can hunt em down and remove them as well as their registry keys.
I've had my AIW 7500 since January thanks to newegg.com, and its a nice piece of kit. The drivers are piss poor though. It comes with a dongle for attaching items like tvs etc and an output dongle. Also, it comes with a schweet remote. The main gripe I have with this thing is the drivers. For the life of me, I could not get it to work right for windows 98 or 2000 at first. When I installed the 2k drivers, at first it would drop frames left and right whenver I tried to record TV shows. After reinstalling the software, it worked a treat and now my Athlon 1600XP no longer drops frames. As for win98, they're terribly unstable and buggy. At first, I coudln't get the remote to work, the Tv capture was broken and the DVD didn't play. After reinstalling several times with newer drivers, the DVD support worked and TV was improved, but whenever I would timeshift, the lip sync would be off. Then I re-graded to direct X 8.1 and reinstalled the drivers again, and now everythign works. However, if I load a DVD and it loads up that flash-based piece of crap interactual player, it breaks the ATI DVD player and I get no remote when I want to watch a movie. Once again, nice piece of kit with terrible drivers. ATI should out source their driver development.
BTW for all those who encounter Macrovision problems with the card, search for a file called ATITV032.dll. This file controls all of the Macrovision functions on the card. Delete or rename it, and the card no longer will recognise macrovision. I've been able to record several tapes with it removed.
I went to the store today and bought the new Celine Dion cd and tried to play it on my windows pc. A few seconds later, the computer crashed! You should have seen the dent it left in my floor.
It sounds like a very interesting technology. I don't necessarily see it at a tool for cell phone use, but as a tool for the hearing impaired or mute.
For mutes, it would be nice because they can already hear and this device would allow them aural communication again.
For the hearing impaired, it wouldn't be so easy. This technology would be a few years off, but you could have a combination of augmented reality and the lip recognition technology. As the user would speak, there could either be a slight delay or a it could be in real time. The device already has text capability, and could display in a heads up for the user and out a speaker. A very nice way to restore aural communication for the hearing impaired
"Rooms where a significant amount of the ambient light comes from displayed sensitive information should be shielded appropriately, for example by avoiding Windows."
Everyone keeps saying that FFXI will never come to Gamecube, because it does not have online capabilities, but your wrong! Nintendo has already shown both the modem and broadband adaptors for the cube at Spaceworld and E3. Their online planes have not been shown as of yet, but the technology is certainly there. We only just recently discovered Sony's plans for online play, so I imagine Nintendo's are not far off. This is a real dent to Sony's might in the console race. While they may be #1 in mindshare now, in terms of hardware they are not #1. It would not take long for developers to start turning their backs on Sony like they did Nintendo in 1996 because the console was hard to develope for, expensive, and technically limiting.
Everyone keeps saying "Whats the point?" The point is, is that Sony is in a plot to help Saddam Hussein take over the work. By bundling the PS2 with Linux, Hussein can now have a cheap Beowulf Cluster super computer or better yet, an ROV. Were through the looking glass here people.
Geez, everyone is acting like this is new. Its not! Adult swim has been around since august, but it only had one anime show which was Cowboy Bebop. Compared to the subbed dvd's, they didn't change a whole lot. Spikes utters of "ShIT" and "FUCK" were stripped as well as women in some of the pornos were covered up, but it was very acceptable when you consider what they've done to anime before.
It seems that the old favorites Outlaw Star and Tenchi were both still aired in their edited formats. Oh well, at least they decided to air the show intros. Overall, I like the new layout. The anime is presented conveniently on saturday, so I can stay up and watch them, record them too and the limited animation shows IE: Sealab 2021 are all on sundays. Nice layout, and it makes a lot of sense. Now if only they could air an uncut Big O and Outlaw Star.
There is a very simple way to eliminate this problem. Make it free! While this may sound like slashdot FUD, just listen for a minute. If the hollywood studios were to set up high bandwidth servers, downloading/streaming videos at 1000kbps 1mb/s, and on down in multiple formats such as DiVx, Mpeg, Windows Media, Real and Quicktime, for free, I bet users would jump on it. WHile this may sound rediculous, here is the best part! Include commercials! Make it an exact mirror of the television broadcast! If I find a video online streaming/downloading from a t3, I'd rather leech from that than go on Morpheus. Likewise, I (and most people) wouldn't want to expend the time and effort to strip out a few commercials, when the content is so readily available. Another thing they could try is to put different advertisers in the webcast ala tv. Break the video up when streaming, at the normal commercial junctions and insert your own commercials. They can measure the amount of users downloading/streaming a video at specific times and voila instant prime time. Sell this time just like tv time to the highest ad bidders. Its just like prohibition when you think about it. Give people reasonable laws, and they'll obey them.
The thing that bothers me the most, is that they pay executives millions of dollars and I'm sitting here on my ass in my underware thinking this stuff up.

How I get "in the zone". Have a large stuffed chair. Its kind of old and creeky and nasty, but very comfortable.
An old laptop. Its only a p150 with no web connection, so its perfect for coding and writing with no distractions. It runs the java sdk just fine.
Headphones with very soft music help keep the rhythm and drown out distractions.
Have my documentation on my left and right side so that I can easily look down and see whats going on.

just great. Now instead of Racial profiling we've got Facial Profiling.

Just use Trillian and SSL encryption. Fixes that problem.

Bose-Einstein condensates? Einstein made speakers?
Distributed playstation based super computer? Didn't Saddam Hussein already come up with that one? Me thinks Sony is trying to take over the world.
