The last (come to think of it, the only) printer I bought was a LaserWriter II NTX from a junk sale at the university I worked at; I paid $50 for it about ten years ago. (Hm, come to think of it, I might have spent a few bucks on the ImageWriter II as well.) I had to get a repair kit to fix a problem with sticking paper feeders on the NTX, but it's been running like a top otherwise. Someone gave me a color inkjet printer for free because it had a Mac-only interface once; I spent the money for new ink carts, and they were dried up, plugged up, and uselesss inside of a month because I didn't use it often enough. Waste of money.
The laser printer works with all my machines at home: my G3, my iMac, my iBook, and my Newton, all over a LAN using an SE/30 as a print server. As soon as the toner cartridge I ordered tonight comes in, it'll be back up and running full time again.
(Not only a fitting double-meaning topic, but a nice subtle X-Men comic book reference;D )
We had a free soda fountain when I worked at ANS - err, UUNet Ann Arbor - err, Worldcom - err, a hollow shell of a building... but I digress. After they put Mountain Dew on tap, productivity incresed... as did the waistlines of a lot of co-workers.
I finally decided one day that the weekend caffine withdrawls (since I was drinking upwards of 3 to 4 liters of Dew a day when at work) and related mood swings were causing too many problems around the house, I quit cold turkey. I lost ten pounds in the next month or so, after having cut over 1000 calories a day out of my diet. Great while it lasted... but then I replaced the raw calories with fat and sugars in the form of chocolate, and gained them all back:p Still, the endless fountain was great while it lasted.
This is one of only two movies I've ever downloaded (it was even a sub, not a dub)... and my hard drive promptly crapped out soon after, before I had a chance to watch it. Karma's a bitch, innit?:p So now I'm sitting here in Ypsi, waiting for it to come this way... A Spirited Away / Bebop double feature would rock, I think:)
Service Pricing I want the following Mailblocks service: Standard Service -- $9.95/year
* Standard Service includes 12 megabytes of storage.
* Promotional launch offer: Buy one year of service for $9.95, receive an extra two years of service for free. That's just.23 cents per month to rid your life of spam.
Expanded Service -- $24.95/year
* Expanded Service includes 50 megabytes of storage.
* Promotion not offered for the expanded service.
* Can I upgrade later? Sure.*
That new connection library is awesome, if not a bit flakey. NCU is quite literally the last use I have for Classic on my iBook. If there's an OS X native file transfer utility available, I might just be crazy enough to re-install OS X without OS 9... well, once it can do system backups, that is:)
Well, they're usually followed up by series of punches and kicks, which is a Bad Thing since a) Mom doesn't like them beating each other up, b) the boy is much bigger, and c) the girl is a much better puncher:)
Being told you were above average in intelligence in grade school isn't going to get you by in high school or college. Get serious about school, and do it NOW, or you'll end up taking way too long to get your degree.
You *will* find the right girl, and she *will* be worth all the "sufffering".
Your grandparentss love to tell stories. Don't wait until "next time" to ask them about when they were younger, because soon enough, there won't be a next time.

And besides, it's annoying to read when you're supposed to be looking at the pictures.
My wife has a focus problem, so she can't track subtitles *and* pay attention to a movie at the same time, so there's not as much subbed anime viewing going on at the House of Zaren as I'd like. Of course, now that my 2 1/2 and 6 year olds are running around the house firing kame wave attacks at each other, there isn't much Toonami in the house, either...:p
I like the sound of the native language voice acting, but for a lot of stuff, I have to go with the dub version for the reason mentioned above. Besides, there's times when I've had the dub and sub running together, and there's a LOT that's missing in the sub, so I feel like I'd have been missing something by depending on just the sub... so I watch it once to get the gist of the dialogue in English, and then watch it again native:)
Actually, now would be a good time to pick up that series and movie-ize it, since it would tie in great with the whole "good vs. evil" theme in the world today. I just dug out my copies while cleaning up the basement recently. and I though to myself "Man, this could make a good movie."
Another mini-series that I always thought could bve interesting as a movie was St. George, from Epic Comics. It was a subset of Marvel, and was kind of like the Vertigo line from DC - definitely more "adult", with more monsters, violence, and much murkier lines between good and evil - St. George, for example, was about a disenchanted priest named Michael Devlin who, after being given a suit of mystical armor, went on a quest to destroy evil by both magical and traditional means (power bolts, prayer, grenades... whatever was appropriate).
I found the writing style and artwork ground-breaking for the time; very cinematic in it's pacing and use of flashbacks to tell the back story. Strangely enough, Google doesn't come back with any examples of artwork, just lists of people with one or two issues in their collection for sale. I'll have to see about scanning a few pages and posting them somewhere.
I was originally going to be posting about how that's an insane price to pay for a cellphone, but after reading the review...
damn, that thing looks cool, not just in appearance, but feature-wise as well.
It still seems to be something of a steep price to pay for an integrated cellphone / pda (after not having a cell phone since getting rid of my TracFone last year, any price seems too steep for me), but it's still very interesting, and I wouldn't complain if one found it's way into my pocket.
I saw a banner ad sponsored by the BSA the other day suggesting that a great way to "get back" at your boss is to report them to the BSA for using illegally copied software. Great bunch of guys...:p

has anyone else been having problems getting to slashdot the past few days? I've been totally unable to access the site for the past few afternoons, with traces stopping dead at a router inside OSDN land.
Is anyone clued as to the nature of the problem, or is it just me? Well, I know it's not just me, I know someone else having problems getting here...
No, I was comparing the low-end single CPU 867 model.
Hmm, now that I think of it, they were only offering that in the.edu channel, so you might not have seen it. But the 867 was the lowest end machine as of yesterday.
And it still doesn't even come close to the price/performance of an Intel or AMD box.
Doesn't come close to the quality, either. (Price is a non-starter, as has been proven by other commentators on this article.)
How many Macs do you see that need liquid cooling for their CPUs? For that matter, how many need to have extra fans or heat sinks installed? Hmm, that may not be as valid of an argument, considering the reputation of these new "Windtunnel" models... but still, how many Intel / AMD enabled boxes could you have run in the last few years without having a cooling fan?
And to attempt to poke a hole in your "educational use" argument... how much more competitve do you want in an.edu environment than to have a single box capable of running MacOS, command line Unix (apache, perl, etc.), and Windows (in emulation) at the same time?
What do you mean, lower your prices? This is already (I believe) $100 cheaper than the low end machine they were selling YESTERDAY, and it's faster!
To compare: as of yesterday, in the.edu channel, this was what I had priced out on their low end model:
$1643.00 867Mhz PowerPC G4 256MG SDRAM 40GB Ultra ATA drive Combo drive ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64 MB DDR video memory
(+ 17" Mitsubishi monitor and Apple Pro speakers, and - internal modem)
On that model there was no FireWire 800, no Bluetooth, no Airport 800...
Right now, I'm looking at a low end machine with a faster CPU (1 Ghz), 20 gig more drive space, GeForce4 MX (better?) video, and faster ram, plus all the bells, whistles, and ports listed above, for $8 more than yesterday. If they want to give me all of that for an extra eight bucks, I'm not going to complain:)
The article says "a proliferation of free music-swapping services on the Internet has led to a decline in CD sales.'"...
I haven't bought many cds lately, and it's not because of the Internet (since I don't use p2p). My decline in purchases is for two reasons:
1) CDs are too bloody expensive 2) Current music selections SUCK.
Get a better variety of music out there, and don't charge so fcsking much for a CD (weren't the prices supposed to come DOWN over the years?), and you'll get more customers. It really is that simple.
Oh hush, that was excellent. A shame we had to sit through two Shania lip-synced songs (she clearly stopped singing while in the crowd) to hear two live songs.
I did, and to one of my very lightly spammed accounts... and it was in German. Annoying enough that I got spam to that account, but I couldn't even read it:p
Multiply the number of spams by the time it takes to deal with them, and hasn't the spammer, in effect, taken a life?
I don't care how many spams I get and how much time it takes me to report / delete them, there is NO way to compare the inconvenience of spam to putting a bullet in someone's brain. That is taking a life. I'll stop using email if it comes down to a choice like that.
We (tinw) know that AlRal had some of his spam boxes hosted in China, and someone sent a Falun Gong-type message to the ISP that was hosting them... all of the machines related to that message were confiscated by Chinese officials and carted off, simply due to the Falun Gong reference. No clue what happened to the admins, but it wouldn't be a stretch to assume some sort of reprisal was brought down upon them.
Fscking around with a government like the one in place in China, one that ignores internationally established human rights policies, and forbids freedom of expression and freedom of religion, all for the sake of a funny, is NOT a good idea.
"Baca's office told me the new bill is being modeled on a St. Louis ordinance that makes it illegal to sell or rent a violent video game to a minor without a parent/guardian's consent."
Which means that if I think my 10 year old (well, he's only 6 now, but that's not the point) can handle a "mature" game, I can give him permission to get it. This is far from an outright ban, and more palatable in my eyes (the eyes of someone with kids of his own).
Also, there was mention made of having to hire adults to work the registers, under the theory that they'll be more responsible, and less likely to rent / sell "mature" games to minors. I made a leap of logic and figured that maybe minors would be forbidden by this law to work that kind of position. If this were to happen, it could cause problems for all kinds of businesses - how many grown-ups are going to want to earn the wages of a register jockey? This could leave nobody manning the tills, and a LOT of places folding up shop.
Lastly... Postal 2 is going to be a first person shooter?!? Check out that screen shot - wielding a can of gas while the store you're in burns! That game's gonna rock! }:^D
And with these savings, they can spend time developing better, easier-to-use-for-the-whole-family apps. For example, their Powerpoint killer (whose name I have momentarily forgotten - argh!) and their iLife range (I think that was the name - I'm not a Mac user (can you tell?)).
PP killer = Keynote. Impressive little package, from what I saw at the keynote. (Cute naming scheme, eh? Stevarino has been using the software to do all his keynote speeches for the last year.)
And the iLife (yes, you got the name right) packaging is quite interesting. I like the look of the integration between the apps, and some useful feature / interface tweaking (iMovie no longer takes up the whole screen, yay!). Makes me wish I had a proper G4 sitting on my desk at home so I could use the apps:p Alas, mortgage payments and groceries must come before toy expenditures.
