Flamebait, yes, offtopic, no. Just because he got some of your pro-GPL undies in a bunch, doesn't mean he's wrong:) The PETA comparison is a fine one, btw.
After reading about the license agreement in the last batch of betas, I vowed that there will NEVER EVER AGAIN be a new(!) version of RealPlayer that I install by hand on ANY of my computers, or ANY computer that I have a hand in for installing software.
The only content online that this really costs me is the NPR archives and the Dr. Who stuff at the BBC. Should I truly desire to view / hear this content, I fire up an old version of the player that I know doesn't give me hissy fits about spam, because I long ago registered it to an email account that no longer exists.
"Apple's existing inkwell and Newton technologies seem to make them in the perfect position to take on Microsoft in what could be the biggest battle for the most worthless market sector (Tablet PCs)..."
I couldn't have put it better myself (so I copy and paste;) . Surely Apple could produce a kick-ass tablet... but why? There's no market for it right now.
Not good if you happen to use.mac as your email for business for example.
Last time I looked, you weren't allowed to use a.Mac mail address as a business contact, much in the same way that you're not supposed to use an AOL or Hotmail address.
Their are FS/OSS equivalents to all the Apple applications that are just as good as the Apple applications.
Forgive my ignorance, not being a Linux kind of guy, but... there's a FS/OSS type of movie editing and compising software? A FS/OSS type of DVD design and writing software? What are they? I'm curious to have a look at them.
The main htmlified pages are still there, but the big bandwidth sucking stuff seems to be disbaled. From http://homepage.mac.com/starshipexeter/teaser.mov:
We're sorry, but we can't find the HomePage you've requested. It's possible that:
The address was entered incorrectly. Check your spelling and try again.
The.Mac member of this name has either created a page and removed it or has never published a HomePage.
etc.
So I hope those mirror sites can stand the load, because they're next on the hit parade!:)
It's no surprise, though; Apple's quite vague in the allocation of bandwidth for their.Mac hosted stuff - I knew this was going to happen sooner or later, I just didn't expect so much sooner.
My first collection of bookmarks was scrawled on paper, and titled "Servers", since none of us had heard of "Bookmarks" yet.
My collection was scrawled on the labels of various 1.4 meg floppies. This was back when archie was still popular, and my primary method of Internet access was dialing into my college's Prime mainframe (before most people knew they could get Internet access through their Fortran programming account) with a 2400 bps modem. I still like the sound of a 2400 connecting the best:)
Can I please ask what the big draw of football is?
Can I please ask what the big draw of Quake is?
Can I please ask what the big draw of professional wrestling is?
Different things appeal to different people. That's the way it's always been. Some people "get it", some don't.
And as it's been pointed out in another response, you've watched "little" anime - possibly some snippets of DragonBall Z, Transformers, Pokemon, maybe some Yu-Gi-Oh! (the last two are crappy examples of anime, IMHO) - so it's possible that you might have about as much of a base to form an opinion about anime as people that haven't seen pro wrestling since the days of The Ultimate Warrior have to base an opinion about modern wrestling - another entertainment form that I frequently have to defend:p (Run-on sentence? I excel at those here...:)
I highly recommend tuning into Cartoon Network's Adult Swim to check out shows like Cowboy Bebop (or rent something like Trigun or Lain) for some higher quality animation and writing.
There's a similar contraption at various malls in (at least) Michigan; the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor (and at least one other mall owned by Taubman) has something called the XScream Motion virtual roller coaster. Two riders, robotic arm, full 6-axis motion... but this is a closed cabin with projections screens where they show a virtual coaster track that you get to design! $5 a ride, and you can get a video of your ride from inside tha cabin for an additional $X.
I know they guys that make this thing have a web site (the URL is on their display at the mall), but Google was no help(!) in finding it.
I recently finished watching the Trigun series on DVD thanks to Netflix [yes, it's an affiliate link, so sue me;)], and other than a bit of blood here and there, and maybe a bit of excessive gun violence, I can't see too much that would be edited; certainly there isn't much in this series that isn't shown on various police dramas these days.
I've also seen the first few Bebop DVDs thanks to Netflix, and other than a shot of a nudie mag that was edited, I don't recall much in the way of "edited" segments that CN ran. If someone could point out any major edits between the Bebop DVDs and what's shown on CN, I'd appreciate it:)
Huh? In case you haven't been paying attention lately, Ralsky's in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and he appears to have goons in Colorado and Georgia. I'd post links to the recent (and repeated) slashdot postings about this, but someone would surely flay me alive for it.
And what does SPAM have to do with Chinese food in Cambridge?
MIKE WENDLAND: Behind the scenes, spam's even uglier
December 13, 2002
Bloomfield Township spam artist Alan Ralsky is in the midst of yet another controversy, this time involving an anti-spam activist who says someone left him threatening telephone messages after he took photos of Ralsky's brand-new $740,000 house.
The activist, Rich Clark of Warren, said he's reported the threats -- which were left on his answering machine -- to police. He said it all started last weekend when he drove to Ralsky's neighborhood to snap some photos for an anti-spam Web site.
Clark said as he was taking his pictures from the street, someone left Ralsky's house, got into a black car and tried to block him from driving away. Clark said he maneuvered around the vehicle, but was followed.
The next day, the phone calls started.
"You don't know who the hell you were . . . with yesterday," began the first call. "You got the wrong guy. You don't even have the guy you think you do."
The caller then gave details about Clark's home, his driver's license number, even the bank his car was financed through.
A second call said: "I'm going to make your life so miserable you should watch every corner you go into, bro, every second."
The next day, there was still another message. "Just waiting for you," it said. "You haven't heard the beginning of what's going to happen to you yet. Keep your eyes open."
Clark provided me copies of the recordings. Are they from Ralsky? It was hard for me to tell. I asked Ralsky, and he said he knows nothing about it.
"Come on," said Ralsky, "That's ludicrous. I'm not that stupid."
He said he had no idea who was in the black car that Clark said left his driveway. "I don't have a black car," he said. "And I'm 57. I'm not about to go chasing anyone. But what was that guy doing taking pictures of my house for, anyway?"
Clark says he took the pictures to post on an anti-spam Web site (he hasn't decided which one). He now plans to add the audio files from the phone messages.
Warren police said Clark's report is on file, but there is no investigation in progress.
Ralsky, who is one of the biggest senders of unsolicited bulk e-mail in the world, says anti-spammers have been harassing him for the past year. Lately, said Ralsky, anti-spammers started flooding him by snail mail with coupons, brochures and ads. "I just toss them right into the wastebasket," he said. "It doesn't bother me."

Just what I was thinking... if the companies that laid this fiber have gone out of business, it might be like abandonware fiber... If no official entity jumps up and says "Hey, that's my fiber!" someone would just have to find it and utilize it:)
Don't forget that they finished shooting the rest of hte shows for this seasn, and SciFi has stated that they will be releasing those shows starting in January. It's possible they're going to continue the series... then again, it's possible they're just using the material they have left, with no intention to continue the series past the new episodes they've shot.
I have to agree - Jodie Foster was the first one that came to mind to play Dr. Calvin when I saw this article.
I really can't see anywhere for Will Smith to play a major role in a direct adaptation of the book, so I'm sure there will be some spinning and "adapting" to fit the book on the silver screen. I just hope it won't be "adapted" to the extent of Johnny Mnemonic - not that it was especially badfilm (mind you, I have a high tolerance for badfilm - but even though I gave it every chance, Beowulf, starring Christopher Lambert, was badfilm at it's finest), but it was so badly stretched from the source that I couldn't get into it properly.
Wow, Fuzzys... I thought I was one of the only people that had read those books:)
Way back in grade school, I borrowed a copy of Little Fuzzy from my dad to read on the bus. The book managed to sprout legs and walk away from me one day. For some reason the book returned to my memory after I got out of high school and I started looking for a replacement for it, and was disappointed to find it was out of print, and that none of the major (or minor) retailers in my area could find a copy.
I ended up finding a copy two years ago after a co-worker showed me gemm.com. They're like a "global electronic mall or flea market" (their words) for small retailers that carry out of print / discontinued lps / cds / books / etc, and they have an amazing range of items. (No, I don't get any kind of commision, I just think the site rocks.) I highly recommend going and having a look if you want to pick up a Piper novel, or anything else that's hard to come across.
