We have around sixty ~400MHz desktops which are increasingly showing their age.
You have got to be kidding here. 400Mhz? The fastest machine I have at home is a 350Mhz machine. And I am a serious nerd (with many machines at home). Is it really true that the amount of work these people do increases slowly? Is it? Are your secretaries typing 300% faster than they were when you got the 400Mhz machines? Are they? Really?
Or is it just the slow Windows bloat? We used to have it on NT, we have it on 2k. Perhaps you just need a reformat. Or to put a real operating system on them [;)].
Or are you trying to keep some job security by taking on this new job?
Either way, the more pointless upgrades, the more waste that has to be disposed of one way or another. (We used to have huge lorry containers which we filled with equipment and would go to get crushed. Kinda pointless.)
This looks like a good thing for open source software / free software. When 64bit x86-type chips are common, there is going to be a huge confusion in the Windows world.
"Is this application / that application / this doodad ported to the 64bit arch yet? no? Well we can't move over yet, the performance will suck."
"Why is your department still running on 32bit machines?" "Because there isn't a new version of legacy application xyz..."
I can just see the massive muddle with windows admins. Whereas, a program with source available, simply recompile. Simple. Should work in most cases."
Of course, this may all become irrelevant if the 32bit backwards compatibility of x86-64 is any good.
I have whims. Sometimes I just get bored of an idea and can't be arsed.
ie.- I think 'I wanna have a look at music editing programs under linux'... start to download Jazz++, and halfway though the dl just think 'fsck it.' I don't care enough to go thru the hassle of compiling it etc, and I really want to go to bed.
It really doesnt matter that much. I'd get bored of it very quickly.
Speaking of which i really can't be arsed to finish this post. So I'll just kinda leave it on a cliffhanger. G'night, everybody.
Plain and simple nudity. Whenever the OSS movement creates a product better than theirs, they have to have an office mandatory nudity (commonly known as 'nm') day.
I really don't understand why people can't come up with simple names for things. I mean, that's fine if it were an extension of something called Sash. But when you get to think up a whole new name from scratch? SashXB?
I mean, they're a huge company with vast experience of naming products. IMHO, even sed, awk and grok are fine, because at least they are pronouncable, and probably stood for something once.
Maybe I'm wrong though and there is a logical basis to the naming. If so, does anyone know what it is?
I suspect that they might be getting their product names from/dev/urandom
April fools. You guys, that's so funny. You are such witty people. You really had us going for a while there. I was all like "No way!", but then I realised it was a joke and thought "Whoah, you are some far out tricksters, man! They're just such crazy and unpredictable guys, I'm so priviliged to be a direct witness of their wit!"
In years to come people will be like, "Gee, so you were actually there when they pulled that famous stunt?" and I'd be all like "Yeah, man, I was one of the originals, saw it first hand, it was hilarious"
God you should have seen my face when I realised you guys were just yanking us. Man. How fucking funny can you be?
apparently the crystals are able to behave as both a solid and a liquid. neat
Kinda as if they......were......some kind of crystal that were....liquid. A Liquid......Crystal, if you will. Well, this seems like some revolutionary technology to me.
I'm surprised I haven't heard any talk of them changing the name. I would have thought this were a given, knowing U.S. political correctness.
Then buy hardware now.
When / if non-DRM hardware becomes impossible to obtain, you are going to be very grateful for your 'old' dual Athlon MP 2000+.
...will it be released for the x86?
I'm so happy I've soiled myself
Is that supposed to mean:
- The fact that I've soiled myself brings me great pleasure.
- My immense happiness has caused me to soil myself.
...?
In my more paranoid moments, I wonder to what extent antivirus companies are writing virisues themselves.
Why is this under the 'Linux' topic?
Disgruntled gamers
when Halo fled for X-box.
Must upgrade PC.
No help from EA.
Gates must find a new lackey
to fill database.
...at leat have...
I did that on purpose. Honest.
*mutter*
the companies downfall
the company's downfall
Please, at leat have correct spelling/grammar on the front page.

Not to mention that it needs to be beaten by a big honkin' pretty stick.
From that shot, so do the developers...
Shut up. You almost made me shut the browser window then.

I was joking. I was implying that the most advanced 'game' I ever use is /usr/games/fortune
What's wrong with Alt-f2 ?

That's not logical!

I reckon the solution would be to make a beowulf cluster of cloned Alan Coxs to make up for the shortage in manpower.
Avarst there, ye pasty landlubbers!
well this doesnt look like good news. ah well, I'll just rummage around in my drawers to find a present for Linus' ears.
