Most document readers on PDAs allow you to set bookmarks in the text for easy jumping back and forth. E.G. I use a program called TiBR for PalmOS on my Visor and have about 20 books stored on it right now. I just went through and set the bookmarks for each chapter, as well as memorable quotes and such and now I can zip through them quite quickly.

I can also jump anywhere in the book based on percent, so if I can remember where things are in the book based on the percentage (not unlike remembering approximate page numbers in a dead tree book) then I can jump to that area very quickly.

It is also nice how the book stays on the same page when you "close" it (quit the program) and them "open" it again (open the program). Say hello to the end of traditional bookmarks and/or dogeared pages. :D

I can't imagine why this bookreader would be any different...

Incidently, reading eBooks on a PDA is great for reading on a train (such as those you find in Japan). You can read one handed and use the scroll buttons to flip the "pages" (great when you are standing up and have to hold on to a handle)...

Right now, most of the gear I carry around consists of my PDA (an old 8MB Handspring Visor, which routinely gets up to a month of use on a single pair of AAAs...) a couple of film cameras (a small "Lomo" point and shoot and a Nikon FA SLR) and when the backlight was working on my iBook, I used to carry it around all the time (and plan to do the same whenever I get a new laptop). I also enjoy cycling, especially for long periods of time (I spent a month last summer cycling around various places in Japan), so a set up like yours would be pretty cool.

Also, about your set up, how many modifications did you have to make to get the proper voltage and current? If you have a website or something with information about your gear, a link would be greatly appreciated.

companies are given patents or copyrights for products that involve huge costs to develop.
I'm gonna have to disagree with this...at least for the copyright part.

A creator is granted copyright on something the moment that it is created regardless of whether the creator is a company or an individual or whether it took lots of money/effort or almost none to create.

Copyright is granted to give the creator a chance to make money from a creation, but the lack of such "return on investment" does not necessarily stifle creation..."Art for art's sake" and all that...

A bit more to the topic at hand, it does sometimes seem quite wrong that a copyright/patent holder can simultaneously price gouge the customer and prevent others from sometimes even mimicking the product and sell it at a lower price...I can understand patents on products that are quite expensive to develop, but as the grand-parent post said, razor refills and ink cartridges?...c'mon.

Actually...I guess I am somewhat split on the topic. On the one hand, as a creator (photographs and sometimes music) I can understand the desire to control how a creation is used, but on the other hand, as a consumer I would really like a cheaper product. There must be some kind of balance in there, right? Or must everyone be a profiteering glutton?

Let's try this one more time, but also throwing in the typical Japanese grammar mistakes as well. This is not the standard romanizing of Japanese text, but I am rather trying to acurately convey the pronunciation to those who don't know it. I am using "L" instead of "R" because "la, li, lu, le, lo" is closer to the Japanese sounds. (The English "R" sound does not use the tounge where as the Japanese sound does...in fact the Japanese sound is quite close to the Spanish "R" sound where your tongue lightly brushes the top of your mouth. Basically, the Japanese sound is about halfway between the English "R" and "L" sounds).

I read the article, but it seemed a little light on details...What exactly do they mean by checking to see if an email comes from where it claims? Do they mean that if the Domain Name or IP that the mail is sent from doesn't match the domain in your return address, the mail will be rejected?

If so, this will bother me to no end. I currently have two main email addresses, one using Cluemail and one using MyRealBox. I check both of these addresses using IMAP with MacOS X's Mail.app. However, since MyRealBox is an experimental server and is not always up and since the free accounts on ClueMail don't have SMPT access, I am using my own machine running QMail to send my emails. Obviously my IP and whatever domain gets assigned to it from So-Net (yay Fiber Optic connection to the apartment!!) do NOT match either of my mail addresses.

So, will something like this spam solution break my set-up?

Disclaimer: I am somewhat clueless about all of this. I only know enough to have been able to set my machine up securely so it is not nor can/will not be a source of spam. So, I appreciate any information. Cheers. :)

Are you going to walk up to him and say, "Hey, let's talk about this. Maybe we can work something out?" Or are you going to defend yourself, call the police, get a restraining order, and then keep a 12-gauge in the closet "just in case"? Let's get serious about this issue.
I wasn't exactly saying that maybe we can talk it out or mabye if we just gave peace a chance. Unfortunately with the current state of human nature (or maybe just nature) these are not options. There is always someone with a gun or a knife or a nuclear weapon, there is always someone who wants power or gets a kick out of hurting others, etc. and from all of those we need to defend ourselves. It can't be changed right now, and perhaps never. So, what the great-grandparent post said (the one I originally replied to) was completely true. Someone must take the initiative because due to human nature, someone else will if they don't.

  24. Easy way to tell... on Kazaa Ruled Legal in The Netherlands · · Score: 1
There is a very easy way to tell if something is copyrighted. Just ask yourself the following question:

Was it created within the last 70something years?

If the answer to that question is "yes" then there is a very good chance that the file is copyrighted. A creator has a copyright on his/her creation the moment it is created, whether he/she chooses to register the copyright or not (though registering the copyright makes it easier to defend against infringement). That copyright lasts until the government says it expires (a period that is WAY too long in my opinion), or until the creator decides to put his/her creation into the public domain, whichever comes first.

I'm willing to bet almost everything out on all of the P2P networks is copyrighted. It is probably safest to assume that it is. So, now it is up to you the user to see if you are allowed to make use of the probably copyrighted content by doing some research on the creator to find out if he/she has granted a license (such as a Creative Commons License) for others to freely copy the work or perhaps has entered the creation into the public domain. If this is the case, then please, by all means, download the file. If not, then I recommend leaving it alone and certainly not distributing it unless you want to face a case of copyright infringement.

So, instead of having the **AA or whatever organization police you, how about policing yourself a little bit? Do some research and find out if you actually do have the right to copy the material. Contact the creator, ask for permission, look at their homepage, etc.

Disclaimer: I do NOT agree with the actions of the **AA and similar organizations, I think that the term for copyright is WAY too long (in fact, I am giving my own creations, mostly photographs, a maximum 20 year limit before I put them in the public domain), I think the laws need to be changed, and I think that the penalties for copyright infringement are WAY too severe. Also, use of the word "you" above is not necessarily referring to the parent poster, but to anyone that it applies to. No offense intended. Also also, at least, this is how I interpret copyright law...please please please correct me if I am wrong.

I am a content creator and I respect the copyrights of others just as I hope they respect my copyrights. If I want to give something away for free, then feel free to use it however you like, but if I choose to restrict the use of my creations then please respect that, and if you don't like it, create your own.

Just my humble opinion of course, however, it seems that many people think that "copyrighted" means "owned by the **AA/etc" when it means "owned by whoever created it for a limited time before being returned to the public domain" (at least, in my understanding...again, please correct me if I have misinterpreted "copyright")
