I have an iRiver iHP-120 and like it overall. The joystick control is not as good as the IPod wheel and FWD through long files takes a long time - just like the Lyra. I like it over an IPod, but that is IMHO.
>Since when is not waching an advertisement illegal?
The Supreme Court has already considerd this issue in: Sony Corp. v. Universal City Studios, Inc. A quick Google search brought up this article. They found that time shifting was acceptable and not significantly harmful to copyright holders.
Of course, Congress could change this by passing this stupid bill. Whether or not today's Supreme Court would hold the same view as in the SONY case is a big unknown.
I have recently tied out Atmel's 8051 based micros (actually, the AT89C51ED2). They can be programmed via ISP over RS232. Atmel has free software (FLIP) that is used to program the chip. You only need an RS232 transceiver (i.e., MAX232 chip) and a $5 cable. No special programmer is needed since it's all software. Of course, you need a prototype board however. Not sure if you can buy that off the shelf.
Yup, this is done in Niagara Falls to keep up with daytime demand. At night, water is pumped into a resevoir. During the day, the water is sent back over the falls where these same pumps act as generators.
Over 80% of the people in this country live in a state that always votes for the same party.
Yeah, this is pretty sad. I have been debating whether or not to vote for Bush since 1) I am a Republican, but 2) I can't stand the guy. I even have discussions with friends and family about it. Then I remind myself that I live in NY State which votes for democrats mainly. Bush lost 2:1 to Gore in NYS in 2000. My vote will not matter.
I could vote for Nader and give his party the 5% of votes needed for federal funding. Or I can do a vote swap with someone in another state. Anyone have any adivce on how not to waste my vote?
1) If you record shows all day long and night then it is more convenient to keep it on 24/7. Because of show conflicts, my Tivo will record shows at night instead of the usual times.
Also, I don't regularly watch TV; it's more of when I have the time which can be half and hour here and there. I wouldn't want to wait for the PC to boot up in order to use my TV.
2) Many companies are moving jobs overseas. IMO, it's a big problem. What should we do about it, especially for technical people?
I picked one outsourcing company due to the arrogant attitude that HP's CEO has on the issue. My sig provides a constant reminder to those that read it that US companies are starting not to care about US jobs. Therefore I am expressing my dissapproval for HP's and outsourcing in general by voting with my consumer purchases.
If $6 a month is even an issue to you, again, take a magnifying lens to your life.
Don't forget that a PC will consume a lot more electricity than a Tivo. I haven't figured it out but I wouldn't be surprised if it cost around $10 a month more to keep a PC running 24/7 compared to a Tivo.
IANA-Lawyer but I skimmed the Grahm Leech Bliley Act and it seems to apply to transactions between financial institutions. I thought about the HIPPA law in regards to health data, but that seems to apply only between medical practictioners and insurance companies. Again, I haven't read it clearly. However, airlines and the government may claim that neither of these laws apply because of semantics. Remember that this is the same government that argues about the semantics of torture vs. interegation.
Makes me made that they do this, but they make me fill out forms to talk to my insurance company about my wife's medical bills even though she is on MY insurance.
Actually, Christianty does not forbid capital punishment:
From Romans 13:3-4 (NIV)
(3) For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. (4) For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
1) I'm still upset about losing Farscape while crap shows like Enterprise continue. Get rid of the crap so something new (ala Farscape) can fill the gap.
2) I used to be a Trek fan until Voyager, Enterprise, and the latest ST movies started sucking so bad. I blame Braga and Berman. Put Star Trek to rest until good writers/producers are found.
Actually, you can flash the onboard TSOP or do some other type of software based mod; both don't require a modchip. I don't know if you can do a software based mod (boot off a CD all the time?) and have an upgraded HD. The TSOP mod should work fine but then you can't disbale the mod to play on Live.
I would add the following costs though: - larger HD. 120GB costs ~$60 after rebate - IR remote control: $30 (not needed but nice) - Samsung DVD-ROM ~$50 (not needed but nice)
A note about the DVD-ROM. The XBox can have one of the following type of DVD-ROMs: Samsung, Philips, or Thomson. Only the Samsung will read CD-R's though. You can either try to trade someone $50 plus a Philips or Thomson drive, or there is a retial Samsung drive that can be flashed to work in the Xbox. Details of this are at xbox-scene.com.
Do you really need the "1's" in the for loop statement? I have used two embedded C compilers that let me do: for(;;)
I have been told (although I have not checked the generated code) that there is no condition checking with just "for (;;)". I would imagine that putting a "1" in the middle would force a condition check "1=true" every iteration. For embedded applciations, it's better to avoid the condition statement if possible.
In addition to the Linux DVD player problem. I would like to see someone ask Valenti about the morality of circumventing region codes to watch legally purchased DVDs from other countries.
For example, I researched and purchased an off-brand DVD player for my father that could play Italian (region 2) DVDs in the US. When he travels to Italy he likes to bring back some DVDs so he can watch them in his native language. Subtitles don't cut it for him. Technically speaking he is breaking the law when he watches one of these movies.
I want to hear it from Valenti's mouth whether or not this type of thing should be allowed.
The iRiver IHP 120 (20GB HD based player) has FM and Ogg support. It can also record from a microphone (built in and external) or digital input. Nice player but the control "joystick" is not that nice to use. Also, lower (bit still good SNR) and one can't change rechargeable battery (at least not officially) when it dies.
In Binghamton, NY it was still light out since the blackout occurred around 4:30. However, during that time my wife was having a routine sonogram because she was pregnant with our second child. This particular sonogram was important to her (me too but I'm more relaxed back about such things) because we were going to find out what sex the baby was. Well, the tech was just about done wrapping up her measurements and was about to check out the sex of the baby when the lights went out.
My wife screamed, "Nooooooo"! As we waited around to see of the power came back on it became more and more evident that it wasn't coming back on. Although my wife was not amused, most of the workers giggled at the unfortunate coincidence.
My wife and I returned a few days later for a re-scheduled sonogram where, alas, we found out that we were having a girl.
Before I dumped my C-128 I copied my version of Geos 128 2.0 using the X1541 cable and the 1571 drive. Using Vice128 I am able to run Geos from the images. I have to make sure "True 1571 emulation" is checked though. I have the files at home so I can't write a procedure.
Does anyone know if Geos image files can be distributed now that Geos has been released? Are those images still copyright?

This guy is neither tall nor muscular. Previous Supermen were one of these two. This guy doesn't look like "the man of steel".

Titanic was a good 30 minute movie. The first 2.5 hours was just filler.

You're right, Tom Hanks is indead a hero. But he survived Apollo 13, not 11. You obviously don't know your astronauts that well. Idiot.
You can't seriously believe that the moon doesn't exist. You are such a conspiracy theory zealot. That's just over the top.
The moon exists - get over it. We just haven't gone there yet. Here's proof.
That came in handy when they found the Chevy... floating in... space.
Another (of many) bad writing examples in Voyager - the truck actually started...after floating in a vacuum for centuries.
Don't forget about Halo 2!!!

How about pick a day and purchase from independent labels with the message of "hey RIAA companies, we love music but you aint gettin' our money."

I think these rules apply to hourly employees. "Most IT workers" are salary and are exempt from overtime pay.

I don't believe your theory. Come on, you assume people WANT to buy movies like Junior, Last Action Hero and Twins? Sheesh.
