Aside from the Glasses made for viewing the sun. (In very short supply right now.) I pose a question/challange to my friends on/.; What household items are there to look thru to view the transite? And anyone out there have some test equiptment to verify the filtering ablility of the items found to work? Some things might be good for the visible spectrum and seam like a good choice untill you find that it did'nt block UV and you find yourself night blind on the way home. I do know about the CD trick but the question still stands because there are so many CD types out there. Some ideas I had would be a glass of Dark soda (flat and without ice) aka; Dr Pepper, Coke. Or maybe Saran Wrap with nail polish. Three or more UV sunglasses. Or maybe a quick walk thru the grocery store with a portable spectrum meter would be in order. And yes I will have a pinhole box for the fun of it.
If someone came up with a solution; I bet you'd have the applause and friendship of many fellow/.'ers

PS. I watched the solar eclipse with just my very dark sunglasses and only right at sunset thru the polution of Texas City(lots of refineries), Houston, Galveston. It worked out quite well for very quick glances.
I've had no wifi in my living room since they installed the new power meters on the outside wall. What i found in that the meters are on 2.4GHz and use up to 4watts output. They are some kind of mesh network to each other. I had to take down my wifi on that outside wall to my brothers house. It quit working and the input amp was destroyed do to proximity to the meter. 5feet away. Lost two wrt54's before I figured it out. I'm tempted to wrap the meters in tinfoil as a message to the power co. But I like my freedom too much. Can't afford to take on a 500lb gorilla.
I've always wanted to do EME - Earth Moon Earth with one. I want to use a 802.11 wifi card; but I have not the skill to program such a packet bounce. Hardware is the easy part.
Thanks! I was looking for something to wipe all those hard drive platters laying around my floor. I did'nt want the cleanning lady to pick them up and give them to her pimply faced son; to reasymble and get my private porn collection. He might put it online and then where would I be?
The early Distros worked just fine if you used the right hardware that was supported. I used to read the kernel config files to find if my hardware would work without problems. If it was in the kernel you can bet it worked. If the hardware did'nt wok i sold it to a windows freak and went and bought a real card/board. Don't put gasolene in a diesel workhorse engine if you want if to work.
Or maybe embed a GPS unit in the the rock with some concrete and record the data. Date, Time and directron of travel can be conpaired to rain and wind data for the area.
The only way (i see) for this exploit to work is when the BIOS "enables" the card at bootup. If your running LinuxBIOS then there might be a chance to detect an "infected" firmware before it's loaded.
This will bring up the need for a "blacklist" of companys.
The solution is just don't run the firmware in the card. Of course this brings up the need for more drivers to be writen for LinuxBIOS and Kernel drivers might need to be rewriten.
Hopfully this will not come-to-pass; because if it does it will make an already bad shortage of linux drivers werse.
I've been running servers in my livingroom for years now. Your bigest problem is going to be dust in the fans and cooling fins of the heatsink. Make your server with positive air presure inside to keep the dust bunnies out of the CD/Floppy/USB and Other holes. Use a big filter on the intake fans and change it on a regular basis. I use store bought A/C filters and cut then to fit my cans fan intakes. You can make a bracket to hold the filters or just duct tape them to the case.
Use GOOD FANS(dual ball bearings) AND HEAT SINKS! If you don't know whats good then readup on heatsink design. Don't be fooled by fancy cooling systems. Heat disapation is not a fancy problem. Basic rule is bigger is better. Water cooling is NOT required! It will just leak and make things hard to repair and bring up the cost. Hard drive fans in the case are a must. Drives get very hot under server system loads. Space you harddrives 1/2 inch apart and blow the fan air thru them. I use a case with 5 CD bays and mount the drives there. Then I put a 12cm fan where the CD cover face plates would have been. Cut and stuff a little hard foam in the space around the fans to seal the case. This configuration leaves room for just one CD/RW drive for backups. Oh and I've never had a 12cm fan fail; even with the added drag of the filter.
Use a closet to put your server in. Drill 4 or more 4 inch holes in the top of the door and cut a 10x15 inch rectangle in the bottom. Put four 40mm fans blowing out in the top and easy flow filter across the bottom. Change this filter every six months or more as needed. Waaalla! Server closet.
Don't use a window A/C for your closet! You will have condensation problems on your servers! If you must use A/C's to cool; then put the A/C in the window in the room the closet is in. Duct tape the switch on or super glue it. Put a big sign on it that tells of the last person that turned it off and how he's now flipping burgers at Mc Donalds!
With a little thought and crafting work you can have very reliable servers made with (as my friend put it) "junk computer parts."

I bet a big part of the reason for H fuel is to limit the trakablility of the crafts exhaust with telescopes via the vapor spectrum.
