Easier to use than Windows. Free as in beer, free as in speech. I'm moving everyone I can over to it as quickly as I can. It's the end of paid tech support though, nobody will need you!
Waste of time maybe, but this is Slashdot. I kind of assume everybody reformats their machine once a week out of principle. For me, I enjoy huge benefits from using Linux Mint. I have a Wiimote act as a mouse (Wiican), and compiz with desktop rotate enabled controlled by a wiimote is awesome, and blows people away when they see it. Also I run the Wii emulator Dolphin, which runs great in Mint. Urban Terror, Libre Office, Firefox, Ardour...... Ardour alone makes installing Linux Mint worth it.
I play tons of games in Mint. I play the Wii emulator, and Mario Kart Wii specifically. You'd have to upgrade your hardware to run that though.:) Urban Terror works better in Linux than it does in Windows.
I'm not saying there's no place for XP. If you have to have Windows, I'd say XP is still the best option. Much faster/lighter than 7 in my experience. Also easier to use, faster to boot..... etc..
I agree with you. To an extent. However, Linux Mint is FREE and much better than XP or Windows 7, or Vista, or Mac OS, or what have you. The newest one is arguably the best one, too.
I do certainly concur on some of your other points though. I have a 1964 Dodge Dart. Best car ever made. Dead simple to diagnose and fix on the rare occasion that there's a problem, and I've heard stories of people making it another 50 miles WITH NO OIL.
Also, a home media center is a lot better than most VCRs.
Like many geniuses, Carmack is clearly out of his depth when discussing topics outside of his field. Quake 2 might be one of the greatest games of all time, and GPLing the code for that and quake 3?!? As far as I'm concerned, Carmack is a god. However, he's full of shit using sales to justify crap sequels. I hear people do that all the time for movies and music too, and the argument fails for the same reasons: Corporate power and brand recognition ALWAYS create sales. But those sales are short lived and cower compared to new and more original works, like Grand Theft Auto 3, or Minecraft, or Tetris, or Civilization....
I'm glad there are new versions of some classic games, quake 2 and civilization 2 being key examples. But it's shocking and sad how often a sequel loses most of the essence of what made the original great and only sells based on brand recognition (I'm looking at YOU Civ 3-5, Doom 3, Mario Kart Double Dash...etc.). Money doesn't justify crap. It just makes you a soulless and worthless hack, unable to compete on an even playing field with the new generation, and worse: the younger you. If you are just in it for the money, please, just go start investing and saving, and leave the creative process to younger, hungrier artists. That goes for games, music, movies, books, whatever. I'm tired of the corporate "safe investment" clones and sequels. There's a reason nobody under 30 pays for music or movies. And it's only PARTLY because torrents are more convenient and easier to get a hold of. It's also because deep down, even 13 year old kids don't want New Kids on the Block 6.0 to make money. And in the game world, Doom 3 was definitely NKOTB 6.0.
Now will somebody PLEASE make a Civ 2 clone with updated graphics? Civ 3, 4, and 5 aren't even fun in comparison.
Actually, by most of the evidence available, Neanderthals had many superior traits to modern humans. They were bigger, had bigger brains, had a more resilient physical build. Humans really only had them beat in a couple of ways: less meat could feed more people, so we out bred them, also different throat and tongue position and superior linguistic abilities, enabling tool and other idea sharing to spread more quickly.
Or as Sublime said, "Early man walked away, as modern man took control, their minds weren't all the same, to conquer was their goal. So they built their great empire and slaughtered their own kind, died a confused man, killed self with his own mind.... LET'S GO!!!"
Agreed. Both copyright and patent should be limited to no more than 5 years. If you can't make money by then, go and invent something else you lazy bastard!
...DEFINITELY smarter than the corporate trolls making this patent mess.
"... as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours; and this we should do freely and generously."
How his ideas didn't come to more fully pervade our nascent and now crumbling and corrupt democracy, I shall never know.
Appreciated. I'm continually surprised at how establishment friendly/. has become. Years ago it was much more anti-establishment. These days, you speak the truth against corporation, you get modded right down...:(
I'll agree Carter might over all be a good man. But while in he was still working for the wrong team. Not well enough though which is why they Reaganed him out of there. Plus: He didn't spill the beans on the JFK assassination. That makes him complicit.
First: They don't actually count our votes. See: Diebold. Second: There IS no fourth estate. It's all a megacorporation with vested interest. See: Freedom of the Press, The FCC, Etc.. Third: The ONLY candidates that are "realistic" are corporate employees. See: Obama, Bush Jr, Clinton, Bush Sr, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, and Johnson. Fourth: Elections do not matter when those elected are gunned down in the street. See: JFK, RFK, MLK, Paul Wellstone. Fifth: It seems the ONLY thing the US has done since WWII is muck around in shit it shouldn't have. See: Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Libya, etc.. Sixth: The country is run by economic interests. The FED is privately owned.
"If Americans ever allow banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children will wake up homeless." - Thomas Jefferson
But yeah, I mean, I guess people should've voted differently at some point? LOLZ GO ANONYMOUS!!!
The Median income in 1964 was $6,600. That seems low compared to the median income of 2004: $54,061.
However: The median car price was $3,500. Less than a years salary. In 2004, the AVERAGE car price was over $30,000. So in 1964 a car cost Just 53% a years salary. In 2004 it's 55% a years salary.
Not a big difference you might say, but now days cars are made out of plastic, have planned obsolescence and do not last nearly as long. There are STILL 1964 Dodge Darts on the road, that have had a minimum of maintenance. There is NO FUCKING WAY a 2004 Ford Fiesta is going to make it to 2044. NO WAY. So the value in 1964 is much, much higher, and that's not even the worst of it.
1964 House: $18,900. Well less than THREE TIMES a years salary. 2004 House: $221,000. Well over FOUR TIMES a years salary.
Take a look at bread, gas, and real commodities like Gold/Silver, and the picture is even scarier.
The American dream slipped away a long time ago. It started with the creation of the FED in 1912, and moving from the gold standard. It continued when JFK was shot in the face, since he wanted to RETURN to the gold standard. Then Reagan and all the corrupt corporate bankers that have been running the show since: INCLUDING all the Goldman Sachs guys in Obama's administration..... Well, we the people got completely screwed out of every dime. And we let it happen. We let it happen because we let corporations take over the news and television airwaves, and got drugged out on corporate pharmaceuticals, and the obvious tranquillisers like fluorine in the water. We need a violent revolution where these bankers are all killed. And then we need to get back on the gold standard and eliminate the FED. There's really no other way to avoid our current situation.
Thomas Jefferson said it best: "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."
You can disagree with me, if you'd like. But try to disagree with Thomas Jefferson. He was much, much smarter than you or I, and had done oodles more research, besides.
I don't know how the release of CentOS makes front page news, but the recent release of Linux Mint 11 did not.
Not to trash CentOS too much, it's a viable distro with it's benefits, but for almost every user in every scenario Linux Mint is a much, much more desktop ready solution.
Unless you've done at least TWO Linux Mint 10 or 11 installs, don't bother putting in your two cents. If you HAVE done 2 or more installs, I doubt you'll disagree with me, but I'd love to hear from you if you do, and why.
Other than the clearly broken Brasero, Linux Mint 11 is the best Operating System I have used EVER. Including every version of Windows, DOS, Mac OS, and other Linux distros. Everything just works (except Brasero, which never works in any OS, but is easily replaced by Gnomebaker or K3B), is dead simple and fast, and also includes superior default apps VS any other OS I've used.
For example, I couldn't see what your comment was rated until AFTER I clicked to add this reply.
I spend more time on Reddit these days, even though, at one time, I swear I'd have preferred Slashdot, both in site format and content.
These days it seems like constant corporate apologising and crappy "eye candy" that I don't even think looks good.
Oh one more thing. The Working thing has been cycling the...... entire time I posted the previous part of this sentence before the dots. SLOW AND GHEY PLEASE FIX SLASHDOT GO BACK TO OLD WAY K THNX BYE!!!!
I disagree with many of the comments on this thread. Some of the older games were just massively better.
My favorite example: Civ 2.
I've played every version of Civ out, the clones, the latest versions... None of them hold a candle to Civ 2. And it's not some nostalgia, and it's definitely not the graphics. IT'S THE GAMEPLAY. And this is true for nearly every classic game.
Civ 2 though is the most profound example. Compared to Civ 2 most of the civs since released (and yes including civ 4 and 5) are just not all that fun. I'd really like to see Civ 2 redone with identical gameplay and modern graphics.
Or Linux Mint. Why is nobody in these threads suggesting Linux Mint? It is the Number 3 OS in the world by some metrics now, even over Ubuntu. It's easy to use, clean, fast, stable, reliable, and the community is AWESOME.
"Mint and Forget" is what myself and some of my IT colleagues are saying every day now.
You should put your "noob" friend on Linux Mint. Actually, everyone should switch over to Linux Mint. I really don't understand why anybody still uses Ubuntu when Mint is around.
One man show? There are more developers than Clem. And Clem always makes better decisions than Shuttleworth. According to most metrics Linux Mint is the #2 distro in the world, and growing fast. I don't think you gave it a thorough enough shot. It's more stable, faster, has a better default layout. It's got tons of advantages over every other distro I've tried. I install Linux Mint, I walk away and my client is happy indefinitely.
You've missed A LOT. They do use Ubuntu repos, for one version, however, they stuck with gnome 2, and a host of other better choices in the app stack. Then there's the Debian edition, the xfce edition.....
And every edition is superior to Ubuntu and every other distro on the market by leaps and bounds. You really need to get over there and check out Linux Mint right away. As of version 10 (it's currently at version 11), it is the best OS ever released, period, and I would easily put it up against any OS I have ever used, for any architecture.
Steam means I won't play it. Looks kinda boring anyway.
