  1. The ? is wil virtualpc come bundled with windows on Microsoft's Next Virtual PC Will Run Linux · · Score: 1

Virtual PC used to come in different flavors.
The virtual PC program was the same, but you could buy it with PCDOS (IBMs DOS), Windows or Linux. I had a copy with PC DOS and installed Suse linux on it. Worked great. Obviously the windows version cost more

Im betting no more PCDOS and Linux virtual PC. You'll have to buy the emulator with windows (Much like you can't buy a naked PC).

    Sigh

Although with OSX there is less need for running emulated linux, and there are Linux distributions for mac hardware now.

  6. P2p software makes Piracy look legit. on MPAA School Propaganda Program Examined · · Score: 1

This is just the MPAA trying to get the word out to a young population that although you can find stuff for free on the web its not right to download it? Just an organization like the RIAA protecting its members.

I used to trade apple // games in middleschool. You knew it was a little shady with "backup programs" programs like Mr.Crack man.Locksmith etc.. You knew it was wrong, but I had no money to buy games (heck I had the games to use on the school computers..)

Now however with the p2p software being more "professional" it seems to make pirating apear almost legit. Isn't that one of the arguments used by defendants in the RIAA cases (I paid for the software so why can't I download everthing I want??)

  11. ENOUGH ALREADY.. Edison??? please on RIAA Sequentially Repeating Edison's Mistakes? · · Score: 3, Insightful
Here is the deal. The RIAA represents.... ta da.. The "Recording Industry". The recording industry (record labels) pay them. They Don't represent YOU or ARTISTS (song writers are represented by ASCAP. They are a trade group for companies that SELL music. They are not YOUR Friends.

In case you haven't thought this through, when you download a song off a P 2 P network NOBODY makes any money directly. Not the artist not the record label not the RIAA (Artists may get some marginal benifit from having there music "out there". Please see ll cool Js senate testomony about this.. .

The world has never had such a quick and easy way to produce copies before. This is new.. This is not someone in the basement making bootlegs one at a time on a crappy cassette player and selling them at college fairs.

One wonders why law enforcement isn't looking into piracy more and the RIAA has to defend itself.

If artists want to put there music out there for everyone to copy for free they wouldn't sign music deals, they'd set up web sight. Many do give music away for free!. Go to a show, SUPPORT BANDS YOU LIKE so they don't end up flipping burgers.

  18. Java includes all the libraries/C/C++ use Unixs on Phillip Greenspun: Java == SUV · · Score: 3, Insightful

Java can be platform independent because it includes a very larg class library structure.

C also have a large library that is provided by the OS that you #include. C++ has the STL and some other libraries

I believe thats why java feel awkward to a lot of programmers not familiar with its class libraries who want to use c system calls or shell calls to get the job done. The java folks created this because cross platform compatability is hard without this.

However the argument that java is significantly slower than c is pretty much moot. For test and XML processing its almost right there, and significantly easier to write code. All the extra data structures and types allow coders to use more efficent structures easily, usually resulting in faster code. (Similar to the way Perl coders can write blindly fast code easily using the built in Hash functions)

I'm not saying Java is better than everything else, just use the right tool for the job your doing.

  19. I doni't understand this "Sharing" mentality on P2P Music Sharing Remains Popular Despite RIAA · · Score: 1, Insightful

I just don't get it why its acceptable, to take something someone has created (musican) and wants to be paid for and give it away for free?.

If musicians want to publish musical works they've created through the RIAA (via a record label) what gives people the right to give it away for free and deny the artists the little money they would have gotten. If you create something isn't it your right to decide what you do with it?

I've seen bands I really like fade into nothing because they couldn't make a go of it. If I like a band I want to support them so they'll make more music.

It seems slashdotters would understand that music and software are similar. They don't have "tangeble" form but never the less have value.

Yeah I know people will download music they won't buy (Its free), and the RIAA is a strong arm monoply etc. The RIAA doesn't represent you, they're not your friend (RI stands for Recording Industy)

It seems hypocritical the Slashdot readers who love file sharing and speak badly of copyright also seem to be the first to jump over any company that violates the GPL(which has copyright as its foundation).
