Debian has been running on my main machine for a few years, and Slackware on other PCs for even longer. After reading the article and the announcements I am wondering what are going to happen to those. And to some degree, to the lesser known distributions packed with good ideas (Sorcerer among others).
I am afraid that these unique distributions will eventually be singled out because there will be either RH and followers, or the members this new alliance and their common distro. Of course, this has no influence on how good Debian and other smaller distros actually are, but these will become smaller in terms of `market share' because of this.
Did I mention how dpkg, apt-get and dselect rule ?:)
What you have done for the IBM-specific (and strategic) technologies is great, but how will your work benefit the average PC user?
In other words, what are the areas of the Kernel where IBM invested resources that x86-based machines will benefit from, in terms of performance, scalability, robustness, etc.?
Very true, and in fact why not extend the concept a bit and design living quarters the same way ? A little weird to get used to the idea at first, but I don't think there is an alternative on the surface.
Are you mad?? Not only will they find ways to continue sending their crap thru whatever satellite link they are provided with, but in addition they will be (physically) unreachable for assault when caught!!!
Please.. share was you could recover!

Can you make us all a favor and copy the pics from your cache to some web site ?
Have you noticed how easilly you could generate URLs to add even more friends to your list?
http://slashdot.org/zoo.pl?op=addcheck&type=friend &uid=578295 etc.
Just make a loop for UID++ and have Lynx send your proper Slashdot cookie (for authentication) for each generated URL... You still have to manually validate because of the formkeys value, but you noiw have a single easy step for each friend. This could probably be automated even more...
This is a serious step ahead for the feasibility of a terraforming project. I'm reading the Mars series from Kim stanley Robinson at the moment, this article is spot on!
The first pirate group out there will simply burn their discs with the SID code of, let's say, Britney Spears's latest album and voila! Perfectly legitimate pirate copy straight from Universal.
Honestly, this is completely silly. I fail to see what added security there is in the proposal.
TLDs are quite often meaningful, and useful, as long as they're used correctly.
That's the whole problem. With the internet gold rush on domain names, you are lucky when you can find a name for your business which counterpart.com domain name is still available. Domains in.net aren't just for Network organisations anymore, and.org is lame for a business.
No thanks to script kiddies and squatters who registered en masse all the domains they could find a few years back, we're stuck with a very flat.com domain, and exponentially growing other TLDs. In the end, the situation is perverted: it isn't that simple to find a good name any more, and to get your domain.com is a miracle unless you don't mind shelling off $10,000's to someone who was quicker than you.
Good insight, and I fully agree with you here. The concept reminds me of what happened to CueCat, except in their case the `keyword' was a barcode, but the destination was the same: some URL based on who paid what.
I don't believe student dorms have either the floor space or the electrical power to handle an IBM mainframe..... and, there is no plumbing available for cooling !
I guess I'll stick with my old P-200 for the moment....
Nope. A jammer will *emit* RF, a blocking device (farraday cage for instance) would passively block RF, therefore disable cellphones in a "cleaner" way..
[...] RF you may be getting from all those cell phones people around you are using.
Might be time to buy a cell phone jammer."
So essentially, transmit even more microwaves to jam people transmitting microwaves!!!
To prevent the problem in the first place, there should be a regulation body disallowing use of cellpones in trains, much like airlines regulation. Or a mechanism to defeat cell phone usage by blocking the range of frequencies, preventing people to make calls.

They can send me and a large number of females for breeding and other recreational (and scientific) activities !
I'm in the middle of Green Mars and progressing slowly... as much as times allow ;(

At least the babe booth pics, please!

Good luck in your friends-finding :)

I know of a guy (Klerk) who has a lot of freaks, but his are all genuine :)
Then you'll have your family & friends worring about the increase in daily spam intake :-)
Let's hope that some day they will get rid of the .asp bit, and implement PHP instead ! :)
Go mp3's ! (these won't kill your iMac)

...wait a minute, does anyone out there still uses Netscape ?

- That old computer in your basement? NASA is not interested.
Trolls will be disappointed !I guess I'll stick with my old P-200 for the moment....
In this particular case, the pics would be what really make the article enjoyable.
After Ground Effect, they will have learnt this one by the end of the day !
Can I get dec.com, please.
