Way back when, the Roman Republic was overthrown, and became an Empire, with an Emperor. The average person did not know for about a century after that occurrence that the Republic was dead, and they were now in fact subjects of an Empire.
Likewise in the USA. The two-party system is a shame. The USA is no longer a republic, or a democracy for that matter, but more like an empire. It's professional wrestling; all is fake, phoney, and scripted. They're all in bed together, your vote does NOT count, your voice does NOT matter, it's all a sham.
Bread and circuses, people. Eat your friggin' Big Macs and watch the war on TV, and wave, wave that flag.
I hear ya. cdrecord is the only thing that has ever locked up my system.
I now only run cdrecord at the console, without any guis... system has not locked since. And if it does, there will be less to fsck because I'm not running gnome/kde.
As long as it was 100% braille and all the ASCII 'art' here was removed... just thinking about running my fingers over the ASCII goatse or the bird is enought to make me queasy... that could traumatize a blind person for life.
dude you can scroll with the wheel, but you can't CLICK on the wheel and then move the mouse down or up to scroll nicely
That functionality is annoying in IE... you start slow, then moving down, scrolling about an inch a second, then you move the moust down an eigth of an inch and WHAMMO, with amazing speed, it scrolls to the end of the page. Needs more gradations.
In the end I would take Microsoft anyday... and if anything goes severely wrong, there is always someone to hold accountable.
LOL. Microsoft's accountability is limited to the cost of the software, according to the EULA. In other words, the accountability is exactly the same as open source solutions.
Dear Apple, I am a homosexual. I bought an Apple computer because of its well earned reputation for being "the" gay computer. Since I have become an Apple owner, I have been exposed to a whole new world of gay friends. It is really a pleasure to meet and compute with other homos such as myself. I plan on using my new Apple computer as a way to entice and recruit young schoolboys into the homosexual lifestyle; it would be so helpful if you could produce more software which would appeal to young boys. Thanks in advance.
The SCO Group (SCOX) helps millions of customers in more than 82 countries to grow their businesses everyday.
You can tell alot from the first line of a mission statement. The first line of their mission statement says nothing about technology, but that they "grow businesses". Is it any wonder their management is being such pricks about Linux? That line says it all... they are being lead not by engineers but by marketdroids with a goal of doing only one thing: making as much money as possible, by any means possible.
Cell phones could not have caused the loss of altitude. Altitude is measured by barometric pressure, and altimeters are not affected by electromagnetism.
Cell phones can affect compass-like instruments, but not pressure based instruments like altimeters.

news flash, einstein: NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR PARTICULAR VIEWING HABITS.
Just because no one cares about einstein's viewing habits does not mean this is a tin-foil subject. Lots of very rich people have TiVos. Lots of people in the entertainment industry. Lots of government officials (like Powell, the chief of the FCC). Lots of captains of industry. I would think their viewing habits (down to the exact key press on the remote) WOULD be of interest to certain individuals. With that level of detail on viewing habits (e.g. what scenes DOES he repeatedly re-view in his pron) a psychologist could come up with some VERY interesting insights.
It's kind of like encryption. No one cares about what Joe Sixpack's emails are. But there are plenty of people who DO need privacy and DO need encryption and they DO NOT wear tin-foil hats.
Modem problems with the early TiVos were common. Do a little net search, you can find plenty of shops that will put a new modem in a TiVo for about $90.
On the non-sci-fi front, if you want a really challenging read, try Moby Dick - I've tried and failed to finish this book three times, and it is the strongest contender for the title of Great American Novel by a very long way.
Do Dick the way I did Dick: side by side with the Cliff notes (yes, this was a voluntary read). That way you catch all the allusions and symbolism which are a big part of the novel. Also, you can skip or skim chapters like the one on the history of whaling through the centuries without worrying about missing anything.
What about animals such as the Angler Fish or the like, which use tricks to capture prey?
Of course, you're right. Which is why i said most animals.
You just caught me on an off day. I've just about had it with the BS that people pull in the name of making money. I know, I know, it's been that way for millenia. I know, I know, I'm hopelessly naive (sp?). But goddammit, I'm sick of it, I don't understand it, and the 'net seems to bring out the worst of this kind of behavior.
Liars. They think lying's an OK way to make a buck. And like all liars, they think everyone else is a liar, too, which makes it OK.
They have no idea that the content of one's character is the most important thing in the world. Contrary to what the religions of mammon would have you believe, the ONLY truly holy thing there can ever be is an impeccable character. I'd much MUCH rather sleep in the gutter with a sparkling character than be a Banzi executive.
Bunch of animals, those Banzi creatures, and everyone like them... no, I take that back... most animals are sincere... humans have the corner on the liars market.

It sucks so bad, we can't ever even BEGIN to spy on our own citizens, even if we want to. Terrorists don't have to do ANYTHING to remain anonymous, yeah, that's the ticket. It sucks so bad, I think the Congress should cut us a nice fat check, yeah, that'll help us protect the children."
The pound standard suffers from the same problem as the kilo standard: it fluctuates. According to my old Physics 101 text, the pound is defined as 1/284th of a Neal.
I'm shocked, I say, shocked! You mean to say that webhosts are more likely to crash the more they get used? No! It's sounds so counterintuitive! Seems to me a site would be MUCH more likely to fail at, say, 4AM Christmas Eve.

Emacs is a good OS. All it needs is a decent text editor, and it'll be GREAT!

What other new innovative things has Microsoft done that really were flops.
Well, there was the NSA Backdoor innovative feature, but that got mixed reviews.

Well, Windows used to run on top of DOS. Now it does not need DOS. But we still call it 'Windows'.
Likewise, DOS. DOS used to stand alone. Now it needs Windows. But we (i.e. the non anal retentives among us) still call it a DOS prompt.

Don't worry. I'm sure the government will realize that, and put a tax on cable bills, like they tax phone bills, to subsidize service to remote areas.
In the equally fine British engineering tradition, it will also leave an oil stain on the launch pad.
