Just like the said in Aliens "Nuke the site from orbit, it is the only way to be sure". Buy/Build a forge and then take the old platters our and burn em up (don't put a whole sealed harddrive in, it might asplode).
I found that getting the audio files of the Wall Street Journal and listening to them on the way to work was a very good way to keep abreast of the latest developments in the world. Sure it is dry and not nerdy, but if you work in corporate America it pays to be informed.
Give me a break, I was a Systems Engineer at EDS in the late 90's till 00's in the "Internet and New Media" division (also known as C20, Chaos to Order) and I had written a proposal to upper managment about how Linux would be the next breaking wave and we should start some initiative into it. I got shot down and told "Linux was a fad and would never amount to anything". Of course this was the same company that said "IP would never amount to anything, mainframes are where all the money and buisness is at, midrange is just a fad...". Go figure they endorse Linux years after it is mainstream.
Gimme a break, no real engineer talks like this, only managers or really bad programmers/engineers shooting to be in management use this many buzz words, especially when talking to other engineer types. Pretty sad that Slashdot would even post this. But in answer to the posters questions, good Sysadmin boils down to 3 things,
1. Standards Standards Standards 2. good change management that is actually used, that involves testing before production 3. knowing when it is appropriate to ignore the first 2 rules and knowing when it isn't
Why offer to take a pay cut? If you are valuable tell them you want to work from home. Start high and then negotiate down. Never start at what you are willing to do. Start high, with the offer of "I want to work from home", then if they push offer to take a "slightly lower raise, by a few percentage points". Then work em from that point. If you are important to the company you can have your cake and eat it too.
MBA's are a dime a dozen these days, sure it is a good standard degree to get, but unless you are a strong business type it isn't going to rake in the cash. If you want to know what drives the beast and you can stomach the curriculum get an accounting degree from a GOOD school (when it comes to business and accounting degrees name unfortunately does matter). That coupled with a good knowledge of technology and a CS degree will allow you to write your own ticket. Assuming you aren't a mole person with no social skills.
This isn't new. It has been pretty common sense that if you speak publically about your employer in a bad way you are likely to see repurcussions. Why are people so surprised when they go out on the Internet and write about how stupid their employer is or how stupid what they are doing is. Duhhhhhh, you get fired.
As long as this is NOT some sticker that creates a magnetic flux in the battery via the Hotzman effect, then I will be willing to say it might not be snakeoil.

Why aren't they main stream? My guess would be because there has yet to be a truely pervasive application or reason to have a wearbale computer. Sure surfing the web or playing a game at the bus stop would be need but certainly not practical. Not to mention the wireless infrasctructure is only just now starting to become widespread. A Palm Treo 650 or the like is probably pushing the current practial envelope. Regular people are even afraid of that type of device, much less a wearable desktop with a twiddler.
It is no secret that the Solaris TCP stack is wildly outdated and could use a complete overhaul. Sure the new modular and improved stack they are including in Solaris 10 is a start and it is lightyears better then say Solaris 2.6. Sun is still playing catchup.
The Solaris TCP/IP stack has been greatly improved in Solaris 10...
You mean brought up to par with the rest of the computing industry? When they improve it too the point of better or at least on par performance with the *BSD's then we can talk.:)
I thought they had deployed the radar boom and discovered the Ice, but it turns out these are theorized findings from visible light photos. And it appears NASA doesn't agree totally with this. WTF? Why do the Euro's argue with us on every damn Mars thing? I mean how many times have they been to the Red Planet, oh I forgot, this is like their first FREAKING time.
When they deploy the MARSIS boom and verify this stuff, then I will crack the bubbly.
Uh, this isn't new, Qlogic has been doing it for some time now, in there TOE cards (TCP Offload Engine). The cards are smoking, especially on Solaris, cause Sun's TCP stack is crappy.
Unless your neighbors have unencrypeted wireless and don't mind (read as "don't notice";) your usage then just get dialup and configure it for autodial and turn the modem noise down.
Ok, well the poster is in Tennessee (if his Whois data is correct). Though even at the currect exchange rate the WRT54G is still 10 USD cheaper, least over here.
WDS, RIP or OSPF? The guy is talking about covering serveal acres, so default isn't going to cut it. And unless minitar's are less then 33 bucks (current price of WRT54G after rebate).....
Hmmm, I don't belive hearsay is allowed in criminal cases in the US period. Evidence obtained without a warrant, you probably got me there, I belive there was a very recent ruling that allows the use of police dogs without a warrant, but that is an extremely recent exception and the only one I know off the top of my head.

Long gone are the days when Slashdot has stories before mainstream media. I head this on NPR, oh well Slashdot, so much for being edgy.

This would certainly be a cheap solution:

Thats great, anyone have an idea of where I can get one?
Am I missing it in the BLOG? Looks more like a string of comments about Cherry, rather then a coherent argument.

So now when people call me they can go through auto attendent hell just like the big companies.

minitar's have better radios and are cheaper.
What minitar are you talking about? The MN54G4R is like 3-5 times more than a WRT54G?
Why Sveasoft? For most applications
WDS, RIP or OSPF? The guy is talking about covering serveal acres, so default isn't going to cut it. And unless minitar's are less then 33 bucks (current price of WRT54G after rebate).....

Pickup a WRT54G, some directional and omnidirectional antennas and get the SVEASOFT firmware.
