  1. Re:Sort of... on Canadian Government Weary of Patriot Act · · Score: 1

    1. Check the "Khan Exception", it was a precident set during a sexual assualt case calling the witness to the stand would be too traumatic for the witness so they admit testimony from a 3rd party on behalf of the witness, ie hearsay.

    2. Check "R. v. Silveira", "R. v. Wiley" and "R v. Plant". Also it doesn't appear they need one if there is an emergency, the case involves drugs oddly enough though they require one for explosives (per the Explosives Act).

My personal take on the situtaion is laws can be turned around in EITHER country, Canada just appears to be in some political pissing match. Probably because the Frenchies in charge of the country don't like GW Bush.

Sure the Canadians may have slightly more privacy, but they still have other bad things that we luckily don't have down here in the states.

    1. Hearsay evidence is admissable in a CRIMINAL trial (in the states hearsay is only admissible in a civil trial).

    2. Evidence gathered without a search warrent or even probable case is addmissble in a CRIMINAL trial (in the states this is a big no no, it is tossed out period).

    Nuff said for me.

  4. Claims... on Nanotech Brings Battery Life Extender for Mobiles · · Score: 1

Evidently the BatMax product emmits electrons in some fashion, possibly a radioactive special ingrediant?:

    Quoted from the BatMax article:
"The wavelength of the electron released from BatMax is around 3-40 microns, and is considered to be within almost the same range with the oscillation frequency of molecules inside the battery. These molecules are able to raise their oscillation energy and electricity generation by receiving electron wavelength from BatMax. "

How you calculate the wavelength of an electron:

wavelength = planck contasnt / energy

So WTF you ask? Basically it is just a whole lot of snake oil by the manufacter, this product is no better then those sticker EMF shields (at least in my less then expert opinion ;)

  6. Advice from older engineers.... on Programming Until Retirement? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I remember talking to an older engineer back in 2001 (when tech was crumbling and people were losing jobs) at the giant tech company I was working at. His advice was that these cycles are normal (I think he said he had been through 3 or 4? like the most recent, he was pushing 60) and if you want to remain in the tech industry you need to get used to basically relearning and retooling and regular layoffs. So unless you want to learn a new skill or language every 5 years or don't like dealing with industry ebb and flow then maybe you should look at going back and getting and MBA, there is always room for more managment ;)

This really isn't new, it has been done at the store level forever. When I worked retail many years ago we would finger people who returned stuff excessively and deny them any further returns. So the only really new thing is the fact that it is automated, though I am sure the managers of a store have some level of override for this (THEY ALWAYS DO).

And remember if you don't like it, DON'T shop there. Voting with your dollar is the best way to tell a retailer you don't like something. So don't shop there and pen a letter to their corporate office telling them so. Don't yell at the local people, they have no control, don't email it is meaningless. Simply don't shop there and WRITE a snailmail letter to their corporate office.
