I'm the type of customer they're trying to attract. TV shows are much lower risk, and much broader appeal. It's also the stuff that's getting talked about. House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black are shows that get a lot of media attention.
I have a travel pass for the local transport. It entitles me to spend 18 hours on the light rail service every single day. I only use it for 1 of those hours. I book a hotel room. I can be there all day but I only want to use it at night.
Cable TV is a service just like the others. They don't have to buy some channels and then sell them to you at a profit. They negotiate a cost - for most of these channels it's a pretty paltry cost - and then offer bundles. It won't save them any money not to offer you the channels unless they offer nobody the channels.
If they had a package with just the channels you watch it would cost... EXACTLY THE SAME! Because you have shown that you are willing to pay that much for those specific channels.
So it seems that companies are suing fake defendants on the pretext that these defendants are behind critical comments on third party websites. This is in order to get the comments removed from websites.
A summary is supposed to cover a broad overview. Not give the details without context.
It's kind of weird satire though. I'm having trouble quite getting what the overall joke is.
I mean I can see how at time he's mocking the general public for thinking they're rational. But it's mixed with a lot of stuff that he seems serious about (Trump's persuasion skills). It all seems to be a really abstract for of satire.
And how am I meant to know to press 'i' in the first place? I should not need to research how to use a text editor. Pico I just started typing. MSDOS edit, I just started typing. Same with gedit, scite, emacs. The help command isn't much better (if it works. Typing:help in cygwin tells me help.txt is missing). Apparently I want "insert mode". First few times I encountered vi, I poked around for a few minutes, gave up and went back to pico.
Now I've typed, I want to save. How do I do that? I want to move the cursor. How do I do that? Arrow keys seem to produce A, B, C and D. How do I cut and paste? None of this is obvious.
Pico and nano are fine. The help bar at the bottom is a useful feature for those
My point wasn't that these are particularly brilliant. More that they're simple to pick up. It would be nice to have a little more functionality but for just modifying a few lines in a config file (which is all many of us want to do via ssh) they're more than adequate!
.not including of course the whole Windows/Drop Down Menus thing, also modeless design.
.
Agree with your first point, but it is nice to have a text mode editor. Sometimes you want to ssh into a system.
That said, I do prefer pretty much everything to vi. It takes too long to learn to even simply type in it. I guess it's good for people who do everything over the network but on the whole I prefer even the MSDOS edit application.
Fair enough. But I think it's the same with Google and Kickass Torrents. Were they responding to piracy complaints? Were they engaging in behaviour likely to attract pirates?
Sure you did not facilitating the raping of children, but you failed to go check in his house on a daily basis to see if children raping was happening.
In this analogy is he raping children outdoors, in public, in broad view of everyone, such that his behaviour is obvious even under a cursory inspection? Is he widely recognised as a child molester?
Failing to inspect your neighbor's house make you guilty of child molestation at the very least. By your dodgy logic anyway...
Why? He's not my customer. He's not my client. He's not using any of my facilities.
Peoples posting torrent are not their customers, peoples downloading torrent aren't their customer either. Their customer are the advertisers.
Nope. Both their users and their advertisers are customers. They receive a service in exchange for consideration (in this case viewing advertisements). This sort of argument wouldn't get you anywhere.
Make no difference either way? So they should be responsible to inspect torrent on other websites they do not control?
If by inspect you mean have a look at what their own site is indexing once in a while then yes. If they're indexing the torrents then of course they are responsible. They should have at least the faintest idea of the sort of stuff they're indexing!
I know, and I've used the site about half a dozen times! They run the bloody site, and you're suggesting that they have no idea. Honestly, the "the proprietors of Kickass torrents are complete and ignorant morons" argument really doesn't wash.
Irrelevant. Did you not notice that your neighbor was raping children? You fails to report crime in your area, perhaps you are guilty by association.
Aside from the fact that I'd feel a moral responsibility to do something about it if this was the case, my neighbour is not my customer. If I was facilitating him raping kids then you can be sure as hell the law would see it is my responsibility.
It is not their business to inspect torrent,
Yes it is! They should at least pay cursory attention to how their business is being used! Just because they try to abdicate responsibility doesn't mean they successfully do so!
The purpose of Kickass Torrent is to index Torrent, irregardless of what they contain. A real reasonable person would see that.
Okay, for the sake of argument, let's accept that that's all KAS does.
Did the proprietors of Kickass torrents notice that most of the torrents being indexed infringed copyright?
If not, are they really really stupid? If so, what measures did they take to put a stop to this?
If they took no measures, or inadequate measures, was this because of incompetence, or because they were making a lot of money through facilitating illegal copyright infringement? Given that other indexing sites such as Google manage to avoid having anything like that level why could KAS not do the same?
Would KAS have been a viable business if based entirely on the non-infringing content?
Geeks treat the law as computer code with no allowance for nuance or subjectivity.
There's the whole "reasonable man" test in law.
Using Google, looking at the nature of search results and the way people actually use it; and their attitude towards copyright infringement notices; as well as the quantity of material indexed, it is quite clear to most reasonable people that Google is a search engine.
Kickass Torrents is used almost exclusively to find material that is obviously not being shared by a legitimate copyright holder. Most of the material being indexed infringes copyright. A reasonable person would conclude that the purpose and intent of the site is to facilitate copyright infringement.
That's 3.5mm plus at most 0.5mm each side for the case. The Vivo X5 max is 4.75mm and that manages to squeeze a headphone jack in (I'll admit this is pretty impressive). Samsungs aren't even close yet. The A8 is 5.9mm. Fair way to go yet.
I wouldn't be surprised if a TV repairman could sort that out too, at least at a coarse level. He'll at least understand the principle of electrical signals, and if a chip is dead, it's easy to replace.
Not sure Netflix are even offering that any more, outside the US.
To be fair, a computer does have other costs. It's typically a sunk cost for most people.
Although I guess you can say that for a phone as well.
Fair enough. I've watched a whole load of them.

They don't. They sell you the channel you want and throw in the 8 channels of dreck to make the package look better to irrational purchasers.
If you were able to buy just the channels you want it would be the same price, because people are willing to pay that much.
Google has never said "do no evil". Their motto was "don't be evil". Subtle difference.

I've had a (UK) savings account since I was 6. Couldn't do much except put money in and take money out, but I had an account number and sort code.

I find that one quite funny :)

No. Really. You come across as an idiot who uses pathetic childish insults because you're unable to come up with reasoned arguments.

You know, when you use the name "Hitlary", you lose all credibility.
How do you establish whether the person tried their best to drive safely?
The alternative is that we treat road accidents, and murdering someone with a car as the same crime. The only difference here is intent.
Geeks treat the law as computer code with no allowance for nuance or subjectivity.

Can't do a like-for-like comparison. I'd say somewhere around 100,000 times the speed (depending on task), and a similar order of magnitude for RAM.
