In fact IIRC I have features on Airmail for the Amiga that weren't and still aren't in the Netscape/Mozilla suite.
Maybe the most successful company in history makes products that are slightly better than what amateurs put together in their spare time.
What makes you think we're amateurs? I think you should check some of the OS MLs out there. Apache Xerces had full time engineers from Sun and IBM working on the project as their job. Other project are the same.
In general, children especially Middle School students should have a desktop. In middle school and highschool they're still developing study habits. They need to learn the discipline to sit down and work. With a laptop you're encouraging ADD behavior, and the return is not so great.
Also keep the games off it. If they want games, and they will, make sure they have a dedicated box, games are tempting and addicting, they need to learn discipline and time management as young as possible. Keeping the games system and school system separate will help this.
Someone is gonna scream and yell about this, somebody is gonna say, I had a laptop in middle school and I developed great study skills. It never occures to them they're either the exception and above average or full of crap.
As for LOCs being a measure of performance, a relavant measure of performance is, "How many projects were completed on schedule? How many trouble tickets were resolved? How many bugs did QA find?

I call B.S. ALL Engineers KNOW how to write comments. If they don't know how to comment they're code they aren't an Engineer. In fact I will lay odds the 60% of the "Software Engineers" out there aren't really Engineers. Just because you have a degree in Computer Science doesn't make you an Engineer. I know plenty of "Software Engineers" who don't know what an ABET accredited engineering program is.
All that aside, knowing how to write good comments, and actually taking the time to write the comments are 2 different matters entirely. In many cases by the time programmer gets around to coding they are frequently tired of documenting what they're doing. Because they're had to write Analysis Documents, Design Documents, and Test Plans. They code doesn't need documentation because "they've already documented the hell out of the project". And guess what, that code may be thrown away in 5 years or so anyway because there's a better way of doing things. Anybody maintaing EJB 1.0 or JSP 1.0 apps these days? (I know there are a few left, but those are the exception.)
I hope this is one patent they keep, holds up. And they DON'T license. Maybe they don't want to actually advertise via RSS, and they have the patent to keep anybody else from advertising via RSS either.

Why IM? When was the last time you answered all you your email? What is the signal/noise ration of IM. (In this case Signal being something you're interested in, not necessarily business specific.)

The Liberatarian idea of open and free immigration is a dead myth. When this Country was founded, you could move off in the woods, pick a place, and build your own house. Wake up people, those days are gone. People have to compete for housing now, that why my property is valued at $170K, just for the land! I personally think that's way to much for land, but the population growth is driving land costs up, and job income down.
You think I'm kidding? The H1 B visa limit in 2001, 2002, 2003 was 195,000, now its not 65,000. Rember what the job market was like then, it sucked. Think there was a coincidence between the recession that hit the IT industry, and the number of H1-Bs granted?

They shrub was elected, and the Ashcroft said the case was "without merit", rolled over, and that was it.

I think this will have a different effect than they expect. I predict they will NOT sell one copy of their software for every pirated copy and their sales will never be what the BSA says it should be, even with 0% piracy.
I want to see the pirates get fed up with MS and switch to Linux or BSD. And the legitemate users get so fed up with MS's anti-piracy they switch to Apple.
I want to see applications developers get so fed up with MS's security they "have" switch to Linux or Apple, and ASP developers move to PHP or Java.

The privacy information says tat the information is never given to other thrid-party. It doesn't say that the the information cannot be sold.
