I do agree with what you're saying, but at the same time I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, someone killing an innocent person based on metadata can be held responsible. This also creates much worse system for exploitation.
I think that Google has a proven track record on delivering systems. Nor they do a lot of marketing. This phone will see the light of day, but how successful it's gonna be that is another story.
Not sure about that. BlackBerry QNX-based OS is really good. It's not like they don't have a great product, the problem is that the product came late and it was pricey. In any case, it's good to have a variety out there.
I have cable internet with Distributel (over Rogers network) and last year I had an outage that lasted around 2 weeks. It was exactly like that. Rogers didn't give a crap about fixing the problem. They do this on purpose, which actually makes me hate them even more. Same with Bell Canada. I hate these companies. They received government subsidies from our sweet tax dollars to build their infrastructure. Now they are simply robbing Canadians with their high service fees and crappy service. As long as I have the choice I will never give them money.
Seriously, this has been one of the main problems with the security in the government. Some high ranking officer visits another country, and before you know it some prostitute has all of the military secrets this guy is aware of.
Smart or not 300$ is expensive. Considering that Google is selling Nexus 4 phone for 200$ I'm not gonna buy this thing. Yeah, the battery life is like 10hrs or so. Bluetooth drains the battery fairly quickly so you'll end up charging this thing fairly often. No thanks.
Not really, being a douche is a full time job. Hence why he's so busy.
Why is he a douche? Because he's successful and he actually got there by not screwing over millions of people?
You can say anything about PayPal but it's a service you can choose not to use. I wish he found a time to do this thing. Safe and fast travel, and I think cheaper too. It would be a great competition for aviation industry.
In any case, nothing but respect for this guy.
To be honest I like what Google has done in the last 15 years:
1. Google search: there were search engines before Google, but how caching and indexing works, and relevance of the results is pretty amazing to me
2. Maps: there were other map products but Google has done a great job to make maps more responsive and easier to use
3. Email: remember when hotmail was giving you about 10 MB of space, and then Google gave you 1 GB
This is just to mention a few. I am aware that Google might be the next big threat to everyone's privacy but the technology they came up with is just incredible.
The only issue I have is that this kid, probably non-violent dumb-ass, will come out of prison where he will experience many bad things, and probably learn many many bad things. When he comes out he probably won't be as non-violent any more.
These people are devoting their own time to create something others can benefit from, and they are not asking for anything. This is possibly the only recognition they get. On the other hand, we have people like you, who are so lazy they can't even create an account on the forum they use.
Anyway, thanks for coming out of your mom's basement to enlighten us with your wisdom.
Genuflect? Nice.
In any case, not sure how good is this software but if some people like it they will donate. We obviously won't.
Who knows, maybe given the resources, this might actually become something decent to use. And it will be free. So nothing wrong with that. I won't be using it for sure, but I'm not opposing its existence.
If we can learn something from the history is that any openness won't work well in China. On the positive side we may see a number of drivers for peripheral devices being developed for Ubuntu. In any case, I wish them good luck.
Because Democracy is better than tyranny. Learn to think long ball instead of small ball.
I agree with that but why don't we hold everyone to the same standard then? Why don't we tell Saudis: hey, either you become a democracy or else?
Then we have a shiny example of how we removed a dictator Sadam, to make Iraq a better place. Is it really a better place? How much money US has spent on that war, and who benefited?
Nerds like chemistry.
In any case, seems like the end game is near. Whoever used the chemical weapons, the regime will be blamed and swiftly removed. What will follow is the usual chaos, fighting between factions, terrorist attacks, etc. Why do we still think that democracy is better for these countries when dictatorships obviously work better. Or maybe we just want to bring democracy whenever some regime doesn't like us. Places like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are great.
Initially I read: "Ask Slashdot: Where to Host Many Small, Retarded Projects?" and thought "This is an interesting question".
Then I read it correctly and thought "That first question made more sense".
Anyway, I digress, Github of course.
Why would they do such a stupid thing? Fairly good chunk of internet traffic comes from that, probably somewhere between 5-10%, though nobody can claim really say exactly how much.
At the same time, prostitution is legal in some EU countries, which is also OK.
And all of this is really silly because even if they block porn sites from around the world, people will just bypass that by VPN service.
Semantics aside (which Korea is which) I must say this bothers me little bit. For a long time I have been a supporter of TPB, but if they are even considering this move then I will have to withdraw my support, or at least suspend it until this is cleared up. Anyone who is excited by support of a very oppressive regime cannot be a friend of freedom of any kind.
Here is what's happening right now. Investors are not happy with poor performance and they are demanding more money. This idea was on a backburner probably for a while, but now that FB is showing not as profitable as they thought it would, they are trying this. They have dozens of other similar ones if this one works.
This whole company has this one "product" and nobody saw the risk in that? It was a trendy thing to do, for a while, now it's less trendy, and in 10 years it won't be trendy. Don't get me wrong, I see the value in social networking: stay in touch with friends and family, creep on some hotties every once in a while, maybe read an interesting post here and there. But it has become the biggest shouting match in the world, and it's all nonsense. I don't even notice the ads any more. If somebody is posting too much and it becomes annoying I block their posts. You pay 500$ so your posts come up more often - I will block you. You pay more - I will remove you from my friends. You override that and I will stop using FB altogether.
Distributel offers unlimited internet access for about 45$/month, 25mbps.
...but he got it right? Sure, why not.

We're glad that you're still around to make very intelligent remarks. Without you we wouldn't know what to feel now, so thanks for this.

Speak for yourself. Now that it's twice as fast, I can finish the movie in half the time.

I'm just glad the phrase "begs the question" wasn't used in this regard.

As someone who writes software for living, I admire these people.

If Google ever creates network in Canada (there is almost no competition there) I will switch to their service immediately.
