  2. Commercial vs free - where to draw the line on Ask MySQL's CEO About Running a Free Software Business · · Score: 1

I work for a good sized business and looked at using the Cluster Jumpstart but when I said told my boss the cost and that we'd have to play for flights he laughed at me, even though we're starting to really use mySQL pretty seriously now for some stuff.

With costs for things like this and gold/platinum support also relatively high on a per server basis it seems there's a wide gap between community based support which costs nothing and enterprise support which appears somewhat pricey.

How do you draw the line for paid vs free support particularly since a lot of SME's are using mySQL and may be unable to afford it? Was it a conscious decision to pitch it high to display value in the product?

  3. I'm running the latest beta on Latest Vista Build Making Real Progress · · Score: 1

and I have to say the whole experience is quite pleasant. It's pretty demanding on hardware but I'm enjoying the testing. Upgrade from XP-SP2 was on the whole OK considering it was beta, I had a few problems with the video card driver where it got stuck in a loop but a reboot sorted it out.

The interface is pretty slick and I keep stumbling over new things I hadn't spotted before, something that happened to me when I started using OSX which is a good thing. I could start using it straight away but the deeper more interesting functionality is not seen if you don't use it but you don't have to dig too deeply to find it and get excited by it.

Microsoft has been pretty proactive IMHO in engaging the developer community. I've had defects that I've logged responded to, live chats involve some of the heavy hitters involved in the project, and they even stated they're happy for us to blog about pretty much anything to do with Vista. Quite refreshing.

One of the probs with PDFLib is that you may not be able to get it installed as a PHP library where you're hosting. Thankfully a number of PHP code versions exist.

Another I found was an HTML to PDF convertor from here.

I've not used either of those so YMMV.

Some of the PHP code sites have a few as well.

  16. How about cricket? on Movie Landmarks for CGI Effects? · · Score: 1

A lot of the US folks won't get it but cricket has had a healthy application of computer effects done to it. Most of these come in to play when there's a dogy PBW or caught behind decision.

In the case of an LBW, the path of the cricket ball is extrapolated from it's path before it hit the pad, then superimposed on a 'virtual' pitch to see if it hit the stumps or if it veered to either side or over the top.

Considering that most LBW decisions come from spin bowlers where not only do the path and speed of the ball need to be considered, but also the amount of spin on the ball itself.

There's a similar theory in caught behind decisions where the deviation from the path of the ball as it passes the edge of the bat is considered. This generall happens with seam bowlers which is even scarier because the path of the ball is determined by the *amount of friction* on one side of the ball!

Add to that we've been getting 'wagon wheels' and 'worms' presented to us on screen for years.

On the whole though, I have to say that the addition of computers to sports has certainly enhanced the watchability of all sorts of sports. I didn't geat to see it but I hear the Matrix camera rotation effects at the 2001 superbowl were pretty impressive.

IANAL - hell IDELITUS (I Don't Even Live in the US)!

I love what the reporters have done but I'm curious as to what could happen next. What the reporters have done is perfectly legal, according to other posts here on /. There's nothing the politicians can do about it. So if it's legal what would happen if these reporters decided to do it as mush as they could. For example, the could publish a weekly "Best of the DA's trash" column in the newspaper.

Does this mean the DA has his hands tied? The mayor was busy inferring that it was possibly illegal. How about if she decided to force the issue?

Now the best thing here would be if the mayor and DA got fed up and took the reporters to court. My understanding is that they would lose and they'd look likea bunch of idiots in the process for attempting to stop a legal activity. On the other hand, if they did nothing they'd be held up to public ridicule as the publics perception of the law is that it is stupid and invasive.

I saw go for it either way :)
