i think i have one of those gateways for some reason it likes to lose its ip and not regain it via dhcp when you turn it off... tis a strange creature.
i know where his heel is! we simply need to run away from the us and make our own country... err wait that might now work (i dont think sealand is big enough for all the slashdotters)
Since/. is charging for subscriptions... how about/. stat mirroring the "cool" sites that get the/. effect and make the "cool" site useless..
I hate it when there's something "cool" in a message, that 1 million other people see, and you try to go to the site and you get broken images everywhere..
Most of us use perl/perlmagick here and it wouldn't be to difficult to create a script that mirrors the site that we want, compress the hell out of the images, and have a new fangled mirror.
Remove the mirror after an hour or two, so/. doesn't use up too much hd space..
now THAT would be a service that would be worth the subscriptions...
I think the best replacement for the desktop would be something like beos, however of course beos kinda went kaputz itd be nice if some of the hardware manufacturers (Dell, hp, whoever) got together and made something POSIX compliant with an X server and such so you could recompile most *N*X software and have it run, but with BeOS's multitasking/user interface. and started slapping this on the lowend 350$ pcs they sell, if one of the wines was ported youd have a decent os which would run a good deal of the software out there.
Recently divx was ported to the Dreamcast (see the pocketdivx forum at http://forums.projectmayo.com) i wonder what kind of graphics chips this uses (i know the dc one uses the pvr in the dc for yuv overlay double buffering stretching soon flipping and a bunch of other complex things that would eat up a lot of cpu time)
couple o things
#1 the other "geek" is seen often, hes dexters best friend
#2 he didnt retrieve the pencil the hippy dude ate it

difference is Timbuktu isnt bundled with every macintosh you buy. and NetMeeting posts your ip to a directory listing, its a design of the software its docuemnted and its desirable.
umm
it overwrites every sector that is marked as "unused" with 0s
which means no need to use srm before hand just run that after you've deleted your stuff and the hd is zero'd while still leaving the system in a usable state.
interestingly
if you drop the hd platter into the sulfuric acid
then add water up to about 50%
there wont be much left, sufuric acid heats as you add water.
problem is kazaa wont run unless cd_Clint.dll exists, www.cexx.org has a cd_clint dummy dll file that will deactivate it and let kazaa continue to run.
smpeg was oss
i think they did some sdl work too.

XviD is DivX ( reverse XviD... )and DivX is MPEG4
kazaa was sold to an australian company... which is probably why all of a sudden they dumped morpheus when they hadnt been paying bills all along

uncl_bob if your girlfriend has a dreamcast, she can now watch ~vcd quality divx's on her TV.
I just had to reboot my windows based computer to install... a "hot swappable" USB printer.

sorry left out the `'s replace first line with /`;
for i in `find
do;
dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp.dat;
done
for i in find /;
do;
dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp.dat;
done
That should be enough to make everything unrecoverable that you previously deleted while still leaving the system usable.
