    that is the point. in case everyone forgot, the DMCA made copyright infringement and "piracy" a crime. copyright infringement is no longer a civil matter in the USA.

    Microsoft doesn't control DVD encryption or which markets they're released in.
    Microsoft has nothing to do with my DVD player not being able to play DVDs I bought from Asia.
    Microsoft has nothing to do with the new (current pop star) CD being crippled from playing in my computer (linux).

    they're not to blame for the abuses of DRM.

    FL has the lowest salaries in the country as far as IT goes. Especially south FL. one recent job posting asked for a linux support tech with pay of $7 per hour. Pc technicians with 4 years of experience can expect $10 hourly. Forget health benefits.

    laser weapons nothing. you can accomplish this with a $300 motorized telescope and a slightly powerful green laser pointer/module something about 8mW would easily go 10000 feet.

    is it reasonable to expect americans to pay a premium for the exact same product just because of where they live?

    I believe that is unethical. If a product can be sold for $10 in a foreign country, it should be sold for $10 in the USA. Charging us $50 just because some people can afford it seems like making everything a luxury item.

    this sort of zone pricing is what the oil companies use for gasoline. they charge more in affluential neighborhoods for the same product. Of course we are left with the option of driving to poorer neighborhoods to pay less for our gasoline.

    I'm certainly not in defense of piracy. Just think about the ethics of zone pricing.

    you forgot a really inexpensive portable reader device with a 16 hour battery life.

    my guess would be a hybrid pda running linux with the e-book reader.
