  1. Re:And on that day... on Adobe Officially Kills New Flash Installations On Android · · Score: 1
you don't know shit. what is flash used for anymore? here's a statement by adobe that was linked to in their blog post (given in the summary):

    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplatform/whitepapers/roadmap.html

Looking forward, Adobe believes that Flash is particularly suited for addressing the gaming and premium video markets, and will focus its development efforts in those areas. At the same time, Adobe will make architectural and language changes to the runtimes in order to ensure that the Flash runtimes are well placed to enable the richest experiences on the web and across mobile devices for another decade.

what does that mean? it means flash is being used as middleware in game development. other examples of game middleware include the havok physics engine, sundog, RAD, autodesk, the list goes on. i've seen the flash logo in my console games already, in fact more and more as of late.

oh look! here's something from autodesk so you can use flash to make console-quality games for the web - http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/autodesk-scaleform-flash-games/. i really wish html5 had rich, mature development tools like flash does. how come autodesk didn't choose html5 for this instead of flash? actually, i know the answer.

adobe killed flash player in android mobile browsers because android is too fragmented to ensure quality. that's from their blog statement. html5 has the same problem, except that it's fragmented by all browsers, and not just mobile ones. if you don't think so, explain why modernizr exists: http://modernizr.com/.

one last thing to rip your stupid viewpoint apart: you hate flash most for the invasive ads? and you think that's flash's fault? you think adobe makes those ads? with html5 being supported to replace flash in the browser, marketers are going to make the same fucking ads that they make now, except they will be built in html5 and you will have a much tougher time blocking those than flash. you're a dumbass.

if you think flash means flash player in the browser only, then you don't know what flash is. you don't know shit.

religion is a synonym for cognitive dissonance. you cannot believe in a religion, any religion, without holding contradicting beliefs. islamic jihad is one example in muslim beliefs where they can't figure out if they're here to wipe everyone out or be compassionate. obviously it's more fun to wipe everyone out, and conveniently lets god sort them out. blame absolved, good to go.

on a side note, i don't get the 72 virgin thing either. you die, you're in an eternal afterlife, and you get 72 chicks with zero sexual experience. ok, assume my culture has instilled a fetish for virgin sex. it's eternity and there's only 72 of them. how soon until you run through them all and your virgin count is down to zero? sounds like a ripoff to me. are they even hot? just a little bit cute, even?

some things are impossible. i once got a request to make a popup or a modal confirm box interrupt the user from closing the browser window. they wanted an "are you sure you want to leave the site?" button. i very nicely explained what a fucking retarded idea that was, offered a better solution, and they went with it.

i think it's a bad idea to allow marketers and account execs come to you, the developer, asking questions like, "is this possible?" because that shows that they've already decided on a solution for you. instead, they should talk to the client or project owner and get a clear idea of what the desired result should be (not how to do it). you then come back with solutions rooted in best practices that play well with the rest of your code. too often you'll have an even better idea than theirs (maybe one that doesn't completely fuck up everything else, or at least makes logical sense), but it's too late -- ego is at stake or promises were made.

if the account exec had stopped to listen to their dumb idea, talked them through the ultimate desired result, and then come to me, there would have been a lot less back and forth. most requests i shoot down are of the "not worth the time it would take" variety, but sometimes it's more like "think about that for a while and come back to me when you realize how stupid/pointless it is." clients could save themselves a lot of money in logistics if they would stop trying to do the engineer's job for them.

logic and critical thinking are still valuable tools when you're not a developer. if you can teach that in a day, then i'll celebrate.

The first use of Ginormous was in 1948 as British “military forces’ slang”. It’s a blend of gigantic and enormous and refers to something extremely large or gigantic in size. Ginormous is a word that is currently acceptable to use, but only in informal conversation. It is considered a bit too childish a word to use in formal or business settings.

as of this writing, all of the stories on the slashdot homepage (before getting 'Many More') are about american people/companies/organizations/websites except for one regarding the indian government giving away cell phones to the poor. the fact that slashdot is registered and administered in america indicates a high probability that the site is us-centric. america is very ethno-centric, we teach it from kindergarten on up.

if this site is comprised of user-submitted news stories, and the majority of those users are american, then it's easy to see that the site is us-centric. there's a difference between saying the site is not us-centric and saying that non-american users are equally valid. the latter is probably what you meant. amazing, huh?
