A safety feature that it doesn't need. Genuine Advantage only needs to be checked once. Upon verifying your Windows install it should never communicate with Microsoft unless specifically asked to do so. Doing anything else is highly suspicious and bad form. Failing to put this communication information in the EULA is also bad, but is likely an oversight on someones part so can probably be forgiven, we all make mistakes.

This isn't true if you know where to look. Game Maker provides an entirely drag and drop interface to game development. Of course you'll need to find sprites to use in the games, or have/be a very talented artist to make something that looks really good. It's also relatively easy to extend the programs you make by using thier c/c++ style scripting language or building/using dlls.

I think that's something else that developers are really missing these days. Making me run around and collect 50 million widgets isn't hard or fun, it's tedious. Yet that seems to be the way many devs choose to go.

You don't get the WGA check until after you've updated to XPSP2 already. I've tried it on XP Home and Pro (both legit copies) and it's worked no problem.

Just checked it again. Get to the windows update screen with the "express" and "custom" buttons.

    paste into the address bar

    javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

    hit enter.

Then press custom and it goes right to checking for updates. So it's possible that it's something specific to that update though I don't see why.

The blame belongs on the parents, end of story. If you don't want your kids to have games with M ratings don't fucking buy them.

Again though, you are discussing the future which does nothing to deal with the problem today. This article adresses what is being done _today_.

Now, on the topic of upgrades. You are talking about OS' in the future upgrading themselves. You have to actually get to the point where users have OS' that do this. Today they do not, heck many people still run Windows 98, and with the problems that new patches often create I doubt that many corporations would put up with Microsoft or any other vendor automatically installing patches without informing the user first. This comes up every time windows updates are discussed. Admins taking care of windows networks want time with the new patches so they can ensure the patches don't break any of thier mission critical applications. A self upgrading OS wouldn't allow this.

Unfortunately that's not a very good solution. While creating more secure software from the ground up is definately thew ay to go for the future you have to have some plan to deal with the current problems. Keep in mind that the vast majority of people aren't going to upgrade to the latest and greatest OS, web browser, or whatever if thier existing one works. So even after you've got more secure computing solutions out there you have to convince people it's worth the time and more specifically, cost, of upgrading.

Dual layer discs are still going for like $6/ea in bulk so add that to the cost of your rental and you get closer to the price of a movie ticket for one. Personally if I'm going to copy a DVD then I probably don't want all the extras, menu's, trailers, warnings, etc. So I just copy them to a single layer disc with all that junk removed. If it's a movie that I want that stuff for then it's better to just go buy it.

In fact for my current address Mega Path networks (who can supply SDSL through new edge at my current address) wants $479/mo for a 1.5mbit sdsl. Now, the article doesn't specify if it's SDSL or ADSL but from what other people have posted, and from looking at older slashdot articles I would think it's a symmetric connection.
