Like most people i couldn't care less where someone is located. It's your message that interests me (or not). The content is important.
I can only see this is coming in handy in cases where the law is broken (i.e. kiddiepr0n or online stalking etc..). But i cannot see this as a reason to throw away any privacy. It makes it easier to catch the perpetrator but it's not that it isn't otherwise possible. However, if i would like to post something anonimously because of some issues that are political or otherwise problematic (whistleblowers) i could really do without a geographical tag. It would be like a big neon sign pointing to me which says "He did it!". And i'd rather would have those PI firms have a little more trouble to find me.
Of course, these things can be forged but it could only be done by the tech savvy person and not joe six-pack.
To be able to do this you need a common base. First you would need to attract the people not connected to the Internet (which is still a large number of people) before you replace the TV sets with computerlike technology. If you do not then it will be over quickly because of lack of interest and and an audience too small to be catering to. In the end though the different media will be integrated anyway.
If i were a robber and saw a robot coming after me i would scoop it up and sell it on the black market..
more worth it then your stereo i think..
Off course.. i first must find a way to get into your house without exhausting myself... you try and heave 150kg over a gardenwall... and with my fingers picking a lock is not an alternative either... let's not even talk about who would win when i have to run away...:-)
Anyone ever read "Deus Ex Machina" by Pierre Ouellette? A very good thriller where Computertechnology meets biotech meets AI... nice outlook for our future if it becomes possible..
And then what? Endless meetings and resolutions before anythings is done?
I think everyone and his mother has a "solution" to this problem. Including myself. But most are expressions of what they would like it to be instead of what would be best for everyone involved without targeting anyone specific. (which ironically is what i would like it to be..:-)
Not a company nor a country should be "ruling" the internet but a non-profit organisation with members of different countries where chairmanship is rotated every x months or so to a representative of one of the involved parties. This way there will be no hidden agenda's played out because no-one stays in charge for too long and everyone can have a say in which direction the body should go.
Ideally this organisation would have thinktanks with regards to anything involved it's decision making and the "member of the board" should have at least some basic understanding of the technology involved with the Internet. It's records and dealings should be publicly available , preferably through the Internet, in a format for anyone to see (i.e. a non proprietary format like Word's.doc). Any meetings should be webcast so involved and interested parties can see and hear what's going on.
The UN is unfortunatly not a right choice since they do have hidden agenda's. The UN is furthermore not a very transparant organisation and this would certainly be no better then ICANN.
Europe has no manned space programm nor experiency with that kind of thing. There have been a few astronauts from europe but they were guestson either a russian or american spacecraft. These two countries are the only ones (i guess China now has as well) which have a manned space programm anyway.
Last time i checked the moon is causing the tide effects we experience. These in turn are responsible for alot of life which depends on the tides to come and go.
The moon also is believed to have more influence on life on earth. Not just tide effects.
What worries me more though is gravitational side-effects because of the reduction of mass from the moon and increase on earth because of the import of it. This could cause significantly more problems then most expect. If earth for example leaves his current orbit just one inch it could cause catastrophic climate changes
You can also upload new games or other Java or Mophun software. Probably something which can be controlled by DRM as well?

"Spanish Fly (pulverized blister-beetles) contains cantharides, which can cause physical arousal of a sort, by irritating the urinary tract when ingested and excreted. But dig this: it was used in the mid-19th century to treat pleurisy. Applied to the skin, it created blisters 12 by 6 inches in size, which (it was erroneously thought) beneficially drew liquid away from the lungs. You want that *inside* your ureter?
In Victorian England there were several cases of manslaughter or malicious poisoning by means of Spanish Fly. In one, Regina v. Hennah, 1877, in which the victim didn't die, the defendant was acquitted because no intent to harm was proved.
In more recent times, and more legitimately, the active ingredient in Spanish Fly was used medicinally to dissolve external warts.

Hope you didn't drink it as a normal beverage by the way, even if you believe in this shit you better had it mixed with something else otherwise you are one lonely geek... even your left and right hand would have nothing to do...:-)
I haven't got any problems with regards to Microsoft's motives. This is a normal bussiness practice as far as i'm concerned.
I think that the best response to this would be a similar service running on other platforms as well instead of MS centric. But hey. I'm not targeted for this product.. im older than 24...;-)
I guess you're right about Apple and the NetGen. I haven't been on a campus for a long time. But regarding to Linux. In corporations Linux is making strong inroads thanks to young whizkids (yes the term is still in use..:-). YMMV...
Think about it. The new generation is the generation that will make the bussiness decisions later. Get them hooked up on Windows and the future looks bright for MS.
The current batch is still Windows minded although Linux makes quite a groundswell because the current generation likes it and uses it. So better turn them back to Windows as soon as possible. And the best way to do this is to create an application that gives them what they need. Who cares for the advantages for bussiness and educational markets. If it's good they'll buy it anyway.
The main problem with the array of products MS incorporates in XP is that competitors do not stand a chance trying to sell their products. Basicly because everything seems to be connected to each other and installing a competitors product could, and would, break something. The fact that MS bundles this software with it's operating system is what is considered anti-competitive and more importantly leveraging this bundle with it's dominant OS position and thus gaining an unfair advantage to which competitors have to fight.
I.e. the products do not gain their market dominance because of their own merits but because it comes with another product which has almost 100% market share.
As for your remark about linux: If you do not like the browser, media player or any other software package coming with your distro you can remove it and install something you do like without having to fear you would break something else. Furthermore, if you do not want any of these tools at all just roll your own linux distro. Try that with Windows......
Nowhere does it mention that wlan is integrated in the cpu. It is in a chip called calexico which is part of the supporting 855 chipset. If you do not have any need for 802.11b you can always put in a 802.11g pcmcia card into the laptops pcmcia port.
Which by the way also solves the "lock in" problem you mention.
Really. Quite entertaining. Wish/.'s interviews were like this.
Anyhow. His view on the current laws on cyberterrorism is exactly my view (i'm contributing to BoF (Bits of Freedom) a dutch "EFF" if you want).
It frightens me that the US government is taking these steps and stands. The country which used to be known for his freedom is slowly turning into a country like Irak itself. Controlling it's own people. It would not surprise me if even the American press is being controlled. I used to dream of leavin my own country and live in the USA. That dream has been destroyed over the last couple of years when it became clear that what constitutes freedom in my mind did not have the same meaning in the USA.
I'm so disappointed in my countrymen.
This is a pretty harsh remark but i guess it's right on the mark for most of the people i know who live in the US. They all share the feeling that their countrymen look deliberately the other way because they are afraid that if they speak up they would be branded anti-patriotic. The worst part of it is that they too look the other way. They refuse too admit it but whenever i want to discuss the TIA they just response with the phrase "It's for the protection of us all" and that's it.
I hope that the EFF can create enough momentum to turn the tide. Otherwise we are facing a grim future.

Isn't there a lawyer here that can explain this to me. Because "self installing" and "entering in an agreement" don't mix up very well i think.

In a corporate network with international satelite offices with over 10.000 employees most of the administration is being split up between network, server, system, workplace and communications administrators (and helpdesk fodder). So yelling at the right person might help. Someone who is responsible for the network infra sometimes does not even have the necesary rights to administer the servers.
