  2. Difference between boys and girls on When Do You Read the Instructions? · · Score: 4, Interesting
I remember reading somewhere that the reason boys and girls differ in their computer expertise (on average) is due to the following:
    • Boy jumps onto the computer, plays with it till he breaks some part of it, and is forced to figure out how to fix it.
    • Girl, terrified of breaking the computer, demands to be shown what to do before using it.

Note: Yes this is a broad generalisation, but this is slashdot.

Because the guys jump into using it so quickly, they learn faster through trial and error. The pace of learning with girls is a lot slower due to their desire to know how stuff works first.

This has parallels with "reading instructions". From the large sample of friends that I have, very few of them (male) ever choose to read the instructions.

Personally, I'm affronted that I even need to read the instructions (especially for consumer electronic items). In this day and age, electronic items (VCR/DVD/camcorder/digicam) should be usable by anyone who spends 60 seconds playing with it (think iPod). In short, we should not ever need to read instructions.

Either way, it's an absolute PITA to do development without the freedom provided by having total access (installing third party packages/software, modifying permissions, configuring services). You can install applications like Sudo to grant elevated privileges on a case-by-case basis, but you have to be serious about it because there's a lot of configuration you have to do if you want to do it properly.

Sidenote: My colleague who used to work for a bank told me a tale where he was not allowed to see what cron jobs were running on a system, but for whatever reason - had been given access to use /bin/cat with sudo. At one stage he "cat" the /var/spool/cron/tabs/xyz (or whatever the path is), in order to find out why some process was hogging the system resources. When he offered a suggestion on how to improve it - the admin looked at him oddly and was like "how do you know what cron jobs are running!?"

Now I can, and it's simply more convenient to purchase a DVD than it is to wait a day or so for it to download via bittorrent, while maxxing my cable connection and being unable to do much else.

The only exception to this is when something is unavailable and doesn't appear likely to become available for a while. An example is Ghost in the Shell 2. I haven't seen any announcements for its cinematic (let alone DVD) release in Australia, so I willingly grabbed it off a friend. However, as soon as it comes out in Australia on DVD, I will be buying a copy.

    • 9600 Baud GSM modem link over vanilla X: Mozilla-1.6 needs 4000 roundtrips and takes 5 minutes.
    • 9600 Baud GSM modem link over NX: Mozilla-1.6 needs a dozen roundtrips and takes 20 seconds.
    • KDE-3.2 desktop startup over vanilla X: transfers 4.8 MByte of data.
    • KDE-3.2 desktop startup over NX: transfers 35 kByte of data.

This was cut and pasted from an email I sent to workmates a while back when I heard about NX initially. These days I prefer to use RealVNC (until I get around to buying a copy of NX) to connect to my XFCE session at home from the office.

Even on what you consider a fast connection (local ethernet) I prefer VNC over X11.
