  2. Can you say "exploitation"? on Hardware Manufacturing in China's 'Hot Zone' · · Score: 5, Insightful

"It works" only if you are looking at the equation from the point of view of money. As the book "No Logo" explains well, there are similar economic zones in vvarious developing countries around the world where people are exploited to produce things at extra low prices so we in the West can get our fix of technology/fashion.

China has a terrible record on human rights and so is a popular place to set up sweatshops. The fact that they are owned by Taiwanese immigrants makes no difference - an exploiter is an exploiter no matter what their race!

I just wish there were more examples of companies using these services listed in the article so that we knew who to boycott!

The $80C movies are probably films that have only been released to the rental market and not to sell-through yet. The video rental places still have to buy these and the prices are much higher to reflect that they aren't intended for the public sale market.

  5. Car co-ops on What's with Zipcar? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Here in Sweden there's a similar scheme (though without the snazzy technical solution). There are many car co-operatives where for a small yearly sum one gets access to one of several cars the co-op owns for a much lower rental price than a straightforward hire car.

For drivers like myself (living near enough to work to cycle and not requiring a car on a daily basis) the system works out incredibly well.

Hmmm - if I were in the market to start my own company I would actually look at something like Zipcar and aim it at the London area. I would love to try and help reduce the amount of privately owned cars in the UK.

  18. Denmark sounds like a good start... on Working Abroad? · · Score: 3, Informative

From the list you posted there I would highly recommend Denmark as a) The country is officially bilingual (Danish & English) and b) there is a pretty strong market for IT folk there.

Having said that, the Netherlands are also extremely English friendly. I don't know so much about Switzerland and afaik Spain's IT industry is pretty backward compared to the other countries.

Myself I took the plunge 4 years ago and moved to Sweden to be with my gf. It was the best thing I have ever done in my life, but if I could go back and do it again I would have to say that the one thing I would change is that I would have tried to set up a job before I moved. Instead I spent 4 months out of work, concentrating on learning the language enough to get an entry level job. I went from a UK salary of 45k to a Swedish salary of around a third of that!

Getting back to a decent salary level has taken me quite a while. However, if I had lined up a job with an English speaking company (many multinationals use English as their corporate language), I would have been able to keep my salary level high. The cost would have been that it would have undoubtedly taken me longer to integrate, learn the language and so on.

If you're looking to experience the country and are less worried about learning the language at each place, stick to multinationals, arrange your jobs in advance and you should be ok. If you are looking for adventure and something that pretty much forces you to pick up some of the local language, then jump right in and move first. But be prepared to work with whatever you can find in order to pay the bills and get started!

Good luck! Sounds like you're gonna have a fun time ahead of you.

At the beginning of this year I also decided that it was time to get off my butt more! I had been swimming for a while anyway, but have increased my swimming routine to a swim a week. I try and do at least 1km breastroke, though recently I've been focussing on some front crawl as well.

I also cycle a lot - I'm currently working my way up to doing a 300km cycle down the West coast of Sweden from Gothenburg to Malmö, combining the cycling with some chances to swim in the sea and some tenting!

I started running as well to pad out the disciplines. I try and run in interesting areas as much as possible and preferably off-tarmac!

Put the 3 together and you have the basis for triathlon or multi-sports (or adventure sports). This is my motivation - to get out in the countryside more and hopefully enter some beginners races that include different disciplines. As well as swimming, running and cycling one can expect to include kayaking, climbing and other fun events.

My main criteria was that I could train myself and *not* need to go to a gym (ugh!). I complement the outdoors activities with some abdominal workouts at home and I try and use my body as much as possible instead of taking the *easy* option.

I'm never gonna be an athlete, but I do enjoy my workouts. The big test will be the winter period, but again I'm trying to look at it from the POV of the training in itself being enjoyable and something of an adventure. As long as I continue to feel that I should be able to keep it up.

    Good luck!

I rememberthe huge civil disobedience campaign against the Poll Tax in the UK, where pretty much 50% of the country refused to pay the tax. That had the effect of prdding the government to change to a fair(er) system. Civil disobedience *can* be an extremely useful method of protest. More power to you.
