  1. Re:No HDTV? on Build Your Own Linux Home Theater PC · · Score: 1

People are using MythTV to record HDTV. A number of ATSC capture cards are compatible with MythTV. (But not all capture cards; a notable exception is the ATi. Do research before purchasing.)

The only problem is that you can only record OTA broadcast HDTV, or unencrypted cable HDTV if the cable company complies with proper QAM modulation and your capture card tunes QAM. You cannot record from DirecTV, Dish, or encrypted cable. The receivers for DirecTV, Dish, and encrypted cable are closed boxes, and it would be a violation of DMCA to try to tap into them.

Sometime in the future, you will be able to buy an encoder card that can encode HDTV from component inputs, just like you can with NTSC signals now. Right now, the HDTV encoder cards are thousands of dollars.

I recall a news story, years ago, about a study of television ads. They compared the effectiveness of gratingly annoying ads ("we have the lowest price, or your mattress is FREE!") to clever, entertaining ads that people enjoyed watching (and probably even won awards).

In the long run, the brand names and products from the annoying ads "stuck" in people's minds long after they had forgotten the ad. The names had been detached from the sensation of anger and annoyance.

When standing in the supermarket aisle, looking at all of the laundry detergent choices, you will pick the one from the company that bombarded you with annoying ads, without realizing why.

You might remember the entertaining ad, but not the associated product.

Yes. This project is superior to the so-called "Dream Team".

The Gigapxl team have taken a far more scientific and rigorous approach than Ross.

    For example, they have:

    • designed their own custom lens to meet their resolution requirements.
    • measured the exact performance of their film.
    • accounted for atmospheric limitations to light propagation.
    • ensured the exact alignment of the lens and film.
    • used laser rangefinders to set accurate focus.

Both Gigapxl and Ross are using converted 9x18" aerial photography cameras, with vacuum backs, but Gigapxl has taken steps to ensure the maximum performance of their equipment. Ross has not.

And, as far as size goes, there are photographers using cameras up to 20x24.

The "dream team" is really just the "hype team".

  6. The real objective: Militarize space on President Bush's Money For Space Cometh · · Score: 3, Insightful

Part of the "Wolfowitz doctrine" is to pre-emptively strike other countries in the name of defense. This has already come to pass. Another part is to militarize space, breaking existing treaties.

It will be easier to sell the militarization of space if it can be explained as "defense". Once the U.S. establishes a base on the moon, then it obviously has to be defended. And, of course, defense means space-based first-strike weapons.

I doubt that Bush cares about Mars at all. But, getting funding for Mars exploration is easier than getting funding for establishing a military moon base. The $16B of exploration funding will be followed by $300B of "space defense funding".

  16. The case for Diesel on EPA Fuel Economy Myth: Too High, Too Low? · · Score: 1
Since few people in the U.S. know much about the modern diesel engine, I have made a collection of links to interesting facts about diesel:

Modern diesel engines are very competitive with gasoline engines when it comes to performance, and always outperform "gassers" in fuel economy. As an example, the Mercedes E320 CDI outdoes the gasoline E320 in many ways:

    • 0-60mph acceleration (CDI 6.6 seconds, gas 7.1 sec);
    • torque (CDI 369 lb-ft, gas 232 lb-ft);
    • fuel economy (CDI 27 mpg city and 37 highway, gas 19 and 27).
The CDI has less horsepower (CDI 201, gas 221), but it outperforms the gasoline car. But, really, torque is what pushes the vehicle forward. More torque is good. Horsepower is more of an indication of your maximum speed.

Given that the current land speed record for a pickup truck is held by a diesel, diesels can go very fast. In the case of the land speed record, the truck from Banks Power is street legal in California. It hauled its own team trailer to the Salt Flats, and then immediately made qualifying runs of 172 and 192 mph. After some "tuning," it set an official record of 217.314 mph. A peak speed on another run was 222 mph.

Slightly more mundane, but still impressive, is the speed records set by a production Honda Accord diesel. As the article states: Honda's new Accord 2.2 i-CTDi Sport has this week set no fewer than 19 world speed records and achieved 3.07 litres / 100 km (92 mpg) fuel economy to boot. (Note: Imperial gallon is 25% larger than U.S. gallon.)

So, you can pass all the gas cars on the Autobahn, in your diesel, and leave them really far behind because you don't have to stop to refill your tank!

You do not leave with the receipt! In fact, it is illegal to take the receipt away from the polling station. What would be the point of letting you leave with it, anyhow?

In case of a recount, the paper receipts are counted by hand, as the final arbiter.

Random voting stations will count the paper receipts to verify that the electronic counts are accurate.

  18. Why not ALL "pay for play" on Labels Find New Method of Payola · · Score: 1

Why not embrace this method, and turn top-40 style radio into a "pay-for-play" system?

It might actually improve the stations. I don't listen to any commercial radio because there are so many damn advertisements between the songs. If a station is all pay-for-play, it can dump the advertisers, and make its revenue with an "only music, no ads" format.

If a record company wants to dump a lot of money on a song, hoping for success, that's fine. In the end, if the song really sucks anyway, the money is wasted. The record companies will learn some expensive lessons, and only promote what can succeed.

The listeners know it is a pay-for-play system. If they find that a station sucks, they stop listening. The station's rates dive, and they get smarter about what material they will accept.

Very simply, I have rarely (almost never) been put in a situation where I needed to use MS-Windows.

When I studied computer science, I used BSD4.1, System 7, Multics, and various microcomputer OS/BASIC interpreters. MS-Windows did not exist.

For summer jobs, I used TRS-80, VMS, and MS-DOS.

At one point, MS-Windows 1.0 came out. We loaded it up, played for a while, realized it was useless for any practical work (no real applications or development tools - it was just a "graphical shell" on top of DOS, with horrible lores graphics and tiled(!) windows), and then quit back to DOS, because it was time to do some productive work.

In grad school, it was IRIX and SUN-OS (later Solaris).

Out of school, I got a job at Apple. System 7 had just come out. Leaving Apple, I took the opportunity to buy a Quadra 950 for a good price.

Since then, I've had Macs at home, and used IRIX and then Linux at work.

The Mac hosts all of the software I need: Photoshop, Quicken, Mail, Safari, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD.

There is only one thing I need MS-Windows for: the software that came with my Garmin GPS only runs on Windows. I need it to transfer maps, waypoints, and routes to the memory of the GPS.

For this, I run VirtualPC. For the cost of VirtualPC/Windows-XP, I could probably have salvaged a trash PC. But, I didn't really want to deal with having another box - I'd rather just run VirtualPC a couple of times a year, and launch the Garmin App.
