The whole concept of Internet Voting frightens the hell out of me.
The Internet has been around for what - 35 years now? And we *still* haven't solved e-mail spoofing and spam. Nor have we found a way to keep 5cr1p7 k1661e5 from busting into National Freaking Defense servers. How many times have we heard about Yet Another Batch Of Stolen Credit Card Numbers?
Still, some folks think those little "speed bumps" shouldn't stop us from using the same technology to select the leader of the free world?
Someone tell me this is just a bad dream. Please.
I love technology. But not for this purpose. And certainly NOT NOW. Not yet...
I remember the days when I was young, dumb(er) and had way too much time on my hands.:)
When I was bored I used to go to a local bar and kill 2-3 hours playing Pac-Man... on a single quarter.
It was great, because I could hustle beers from other patrons by betting whether I could get 100,000 or 200,000 (or whatever) points, all because I had the Holy Grail of Pac-mania: The Ninth-Key Pattern.
I guess I can understand why my wife won't let me get one of those oldie-but-goodie machines for our place.

Rome Moving to Linux

Seems to me the City is playing the "we're trying out Linux" card in as a means to publicly complain about Microsoft.
At Microsoft they know how much we esteem them.
Riiiiight. They "esteem them" enough to tell the media they are trying something else.
This has been a tactic tried and true by other customers - it gets Redmond back to the bargaining table, to knock thier bid down a few euros, just as long as they send Tux away.
Seems to me that Seagate, WD, Maxtor et al should be paying close attention (and perhaps they are).
With Flash getting more and more mainstream, and with the now high volumes being made available, hard drives are becoming less and less necessary for commodity products such as desktops and notebooks. The latter especially will make the switch from HDs to Flash, to lighten up the power and physical load.
If Flash sees overall performance and shelf-life improvements rivaling HDs (more so than what it does already), HDs may well be relegated to a place in history/tech museums... right next to the analog cameras.
Another part of the deal may be DIS using MSFT to produce childrens (games, educational, et al.) software. They *may* (and I'm just speculating here) also want Redmond to produce animations in place of Pixar. But that's something for down the road - it's not something MSFT does now. Who knows?
At any rate, the Mouse is ultimately just going to end up looking plain Goofy.
Ballmer and Gates, on the other hand, make thier Machine all the more powerful...
...And it includes anyone and everyone who I don't recognize on my Caller ID.
If people don't have the courtesy to identify themselves when they call, I won't answer the phone. I certainly don't answer calls from the Number 1 caller, "Out Of Area".
And best of luck to anyone trying to sell windows to my answering machine.
...Is for the rest of the industry to go Class Action on these bastards.
It's clear that these people want to destroy *nix, destroy the GPL, the Open Source community... the whole concept of Intellectual Property altogether. Not to mention (but I will) that they don't intend to stop until rob all monetary value of any software and/or services derived therefrom.
It's war. SCO declared it, and is actively on the attack. They intend to vanquish their enemies... us. To win this war, you defeat them, crush them... DESTROY them.
IBM, SGI and the rest of SCO's declared enemies should join forces and take these people down... and crush them so badly that noone else should ever even THINK of pulling this nonsense again.
As an American who studied for a year in Sweden, I can say first-hand that the Nordic have always been at or near the cutting edge where software and technological issues are involved.
Sweden in particular is one of the most wired nations on the planet, and has been actively involved in open-source... anyone ever heard of MySQL?
Let the haxxors go after the ba****ds who keep sending us "O_n_l_i_n_e_D_e_g_r_e_e", "Lonely?", "Arnold", "Urgent Business Proposal" and all that other BS.
Bring THIER servers down, and they will earn instant respect... at least from this computer geek.
If I ever set up a blog myself, I'll just charge $699 for a license to read it.

Is there a way to DDoS Darl's car? Hmmm...

I let my Magic 8-Ball make my decisions.
It it more useful than a coin toss?
"Yes Definitely"
See?
Can you imagine making love in THAT elevator?
Talk about Mile High Club...

Does not equal one technology, one protocol, one methodology, one market...
One target.
Will that make Perl 6 coders a different kind of "Parrot Head"?
Seems to me that all Gates et al need to do is dig out their notes from the browser battles back in the day.
IE is part of Windows, Media Player is part of Windows, Movie Maker is part of Windows, GoBack^H^H^H^H^H^H system rollback is part of Windows...
It's all the same strategy... stick to the story, and ultimately it becomes The Truth.

I might as well reveal my own plans to buy Microsoft.

Actually, the poem goes this way:
Weatherball red, warmer ahead.
Weatherball blue, cooler in view.
Weatherball green, no change foreseen.
Colors blinking bright, rain or snow in sight.

BTW, I drive by the Weather Ball on my way to work. It's very cool.
I can see it now:

Nice.
Let's give 5CR1P7 K1661E5 a new, simpler idea on how to bust into firewalls...

Damn, I quoted you. Forgive me, Ashcroft, for I have sinned ... it has been $150 since my last copyright violation ...
You better patent ("Patent Penance(tm)") that before Bezos gets wind of it.
What they are really pressing for, but don't realize, is a crippling of e-commerce. I wonder what Jeff Bezos has to say about this.
Just curious.
There's a Johnny Depp joke in here somewhere, but I can't quite put it together...
