I'm still waiting for a small (Micro ATX or smaller) mobo that will allow for a REAL chip (P4/Athlon), 512MB RAM, ATA 100 HD, CD, ethernet, USB, AND support for AGP graphics. I want this for portable gaming and haven't found the IDEAL board...yet! Still looking....any suggestions?

Clear Hard Drive Mods

Yes, modding your hard drive will introduce impurities into it. Yes, you will void the warranty, yes, you will offend the Gods and generate additional RF.
But, it's a mod that you do because you want to, damn the consequences. It's done....for fun, for the hell of it, because you can, because it's there.
Chill out, lay off the "Yeah buts" and applaud the chutzpah that it takes to actually do this....but do not try it with ANYTHING mission critical!
Thanks for the insights...maybe I am paying for spam, maybe it is taking more and more time from me that could be spent on other things. Big picture, I really, really, just don't care. Maybe I'm a bad person, but I have other things to worry about.
Can someone explain this to me, without working themselves into a lather??
I'm a tech guy....I get (understand) most things. What I don't get is the religious fervor that people work themselves into when they get spam. To put it bluntly, what's the big freakin' deal?? Delete it and move on....or am I missing a larger point?
Better to get spam then junk snail mail...spam doesn't have to be recycled. Spell it out for me...why should I care?
In my albeit limited experience w. RAID controllers, you cannot buy a better controller than ICP Vortex. Support is good, and they make a solid product. And you pay for it!
IDE RAID is fine for workstation's and home use....as far as I am concerned, it has no business in a corporate server environment. Anyone who tells you differnet is shaving pennies, and hasn't a clue. Of course, your opinion may differ!
Moxi as was reported here really excites me! I like the idea of my cable box AND my PVR being an all in one solution....if it goes like I hope it does, it will finally allow me to record one show while I watch another....something that my current VCR/cable box combination does not allow. It seems like the cable providers don't understand that, sometimes, there are two programs scheduled at the same time that interest people. Make a PVR that can record 2+ streams from my cable provider at the same time, and I will buy it.
Be reasonable and willing to compromise. Other people will sometimes need to have their way, even if it is wrong. Remember, while often times most palatable, open source is not always the best solution (no flames please!).
Try not to be an open source zealot....most people won't understand, and, if and when something goes to hell, your "free" software will be blamed. CYA!!!
I concur. I'm trying to build a portable gaming rig right now, and there is not a great deal of micro-ATX cases out there. Eliminate the need for these extras, and such a form factor would be quite possible! Lose the floppy (BIOS would HAVE to support boot from USB floppy, or devise some other means to perform flash of chips), dump the serial and parallel connections. Lose PS/2 as well, and maybe even allow just a single IDE port, and force devices to do Master/Slave (but that could be a drain on HDD performance during games that require CD in drive). Dump ANY and ALL support for ISA devices as well.
My driver's license became my Natl. ID as soon as the State of Iowa started using digital cameras to capture (and no doubt store) my image for the license, and probably before.
Try doing much of anything that matters WITHOUT a form of state issued ID, and for the most part, you will be SOL. National ID's are here, and have been here for quite some time. Get over it OR get used to it.
Hmmmm...maybe someone from the "Linux Rulez" crowd has hacked it, made it look like MS was voting for themselves when really they weren't, revealed it, and MS is really innocent but looks like the big evil giant when really they have done no wrong because the d00d hacked the site......yeah, that's what happened!!!!
Since we're talking CTS (Carpal tunnel), anyone used Chinese Exercise balls to relieve pain or provide alternative motion for wrist and finger muscles? For those who don't know, they look a lot cooler than a dirty stress ball. I just ordered a pair and want to try them for my CTS that has been getting worse lately.
Heh...read one of the other links....answered most of my questions...multiple streams to multiple TV's/PC's, $425, purchased by cable provider. Me wanty so bad!!!:)
Interesting, VERY interesting. But I wonder, who provides this? Do I buy it and put it in my house and use it to interface with my cable provider? That seems difficult...will my cable/internet provider support this?
Seems like a better solution would be for my cable provider to buy this, give/rent it to me per month, and let me go wild. The idea of being able to stream content to 4 TV's is great!! Would I be able to watch one channel and record another? Watch two channels on two TV's, and only have to deal with the one settop (Moxi)? In theory, I ought to since cable decode and PVR are all in one unit.
Frankly, this is damn exciting! I've been very interested in PVR's for awhile now, they are quite cool, but I always look at them and go "If it only had....". This might be it!!

I doubt MS has budgeted too much money to after sale support of XBox. Reasoning as follows:
XBox sells for $300.
Here's where it get's tricky...quoting consumer prices here, I'm sure MS buys this stuff by the truckload for a lot less...bear with me.
Processor inside cost $75-100.
Memory cost $50.
Hard drive cost $75.
Misc. hardware cost $50.
Worst case, that's $275. Add to that the BOX itself, packaging, controllers, docs, etc...we're talking an item with a VERY low profit margin. MS spent some quingillion dollars developing this thing, so obviously, some money will need to be directed to recouping development costs. When all is said and done, I don't think that MS is making a lot of money on each unit.
Is that an excuse for poor after market service? No, it's a lousy excuse! But, they had a price point they believed they had to hit, and something had to slide for them to hit it. As a tech geek, ask yourself, "Would I rather have a faster processor and more memory, or real good support that I'll probably never need?". Me, I'd pick the hardware and roll the dice on the support.
Now, I don't believe that MS has tried to make a faulty product...they dove into the console war headfirst, and HAVE to shine right out of the gate, if they don't, major egg on the face. So, it behooves them , as it does any manufacturer, to create a quality product. I'm just stating the facts as I see them, not defending or accusing.
I read this article verbatim some months back, but cannot recall the source. Bottom line, this, if true, is not new news.
Having said that, I very much like the idea of a all in one box that does the digital convergence thing. ReplayTV is close with a TiVo like device, but low end sells for @ $800. Ouch. Price this thing at $300 and let me connect it to my broadband connection and let me skip all the.NET stuff, and I'll be a happy camper!! Hell, I might even buy an MS OS if it makes me VERY happy!:)
Inevitably, there will be a box set of all 3 films sold, sometime around 2004 or 2005 (just in time for Christmas I am sure!). No doubt, the box set will be a no holds barred affair, lots of extras, behind the scenes, cut scenes, booklets, etc. This no doubt will be the one to own. I'm glad that FOTR is being released singly, but I'll wait and buy the full package with all the trimmings.
