Wouldn't the best security (or at least pretty good) be to NOT advertise it on one of the most heavily trafficked sites on the net? I mean, if you want to physically destroy servers and the hardware that supports them, don't you need to know where they are? Thanks to ZD's article, now we and all other nefarious types know. Thanks John Dvorak!:)
This, while being a good idea, reduces the whole "spirit of Christmas" down to a gift exchange only. It forces people to miss the point of exchanging gifts, getting together with family, big greasy meal, the whole bit.
Still, from a purely economic standpoint, I'd use it. Imagine, Uncle buys you a $20 widgit, yet, if you will put in $10 of your own money, you upgrade to a $30 widgit which only costs you $10, not $30. In many ways, this is more of an online gift certificate.
There'd be some way to monitor who is drinking the coffe, and, most importantly, who isn't making a fresh pot when they drain it!!! Man I hate that....must be my caffeine addiction talking! Got to feed that Jones!!!
Same reason that solar/wind/geothermal/hydro/tidal power are still viewed as "alternative" sources of power, not mainstream, viable energy sources. These means are all non polluting (when compared to fossil fuels), 100% renewable, and require massive upfront expenditures. Until the oil is GONE, you won't see any of these replacing good old reliable burning of fossil fuels. When the oil does run out, the screams of the populace will echo for miles, and they'll have themselves and their companies to blame. End of rant.
They should be taken to court, made fun of, boycotted! A security hole, my god, well I run Solaris, thank goodness I'm not affecte.....What's that?? It affects what? Oh....oh my....OH WAITER!!!! A plate of crow please!:)
Innovation and market forces push new product out the door far faster then government regulation can anticipate (look at XP!). What effect, if any, do you feel this will tribunal will have on MS? My thought is that it will be a paper tiger with no real authority, but lots of noise.
Network Attached Storage would be a good solution here. Ideal would be a pair of 100GB drives that the user could configure to Raid 0 or 1, and replace drives as needed. Unfortunately, the cheapest NAS out there today is about US$500 for 40GB....not a good cost/capacity ratio. If SOMEONE would start selling a NAS for the home user (linux driven, web based config, scaleable and upgradeable), priced slightly higher than the cost of the drives installed, they'd sell a lot.
Maybe once the Aussies have proven it will work on this scale, we can throw a few up in the American Southwest. The environment is very similar to the Outback. Solar is our salvation. Build this so that the remaining fossil fuels can be used more wisely, and we can stop sucking the teat of foreign oil.
No, I had to rescue the people who had to see what the screen saver could have been. They get to say, "I was dumb, please fix.". I WISH I had that luxury.
This consumed half my day, and half the day of my 20 co-workers. People lost the ability to work because their job relied on Outlook working properly. People are going to have to work long into the night to replace the time lost earlier today because of this 159 kb of malice. This, my friends, cost people time and money.
Non destructive my ass....I've got to agree with Ashcroft...this sort of crap is a crime and you ought to be locked up when you get caught. Time for these lusers to develop a sense of being a responsible world citizen and stop pulling this childish, malicious crap that benefits NO ONE!!!
Let's draw an analogy between this and telephone service, or any other public utility (water, power, etc.). If 45 % of the country's telephone subscriber's were going to lose service, govt would be up in arms and rattling cages, dropping stiumlus packages left and right.
Granted, bandwidth is not a crucial as say water, power, and heat, but to some businesses, it could be make or break. Scary...
Wonder how my EDonkey traffic will be this weekend?:)
I'm posting late, so this will probably never be read. Oh well.
I worked with a guy who shipped a $5000 laser printer via UPS. He took digital photos of the printer as he was packaging it, so he had a visual record of how it was packed and how it looked when it left the shipping dock. UPS busted it all to hell, and danced their usual dance of "We no damage, you pack bad, we no pay!". HAHA!! Surprise...here's photos of EXACTLY how I packed it, PAY ME! They did.
ANY UPS employee INTENTIONALLY dropping, kicking, or otherwise mishandling ANY package, marked fragile or not, deserves to be fired, no severance, no unemployment, you broke the rules fucko, hit the door! That is simply unacceptable, and any management that knowingly allows it to occur deserves the same boot in the ass. UPS workers make a pretty decent wage, we as their customers expect a certain level of accountability when we ship with them. It's time we expected it. Otherwise, FedEx, and, eventually, USPS will step up to the plate.
Have faith, stick it out. You've come this far, not long to go.
Real world, all that will matter is the degree you hold, be it in CS or in Applied Bogo Dynamism Philosophy. It's a 4 year degree, and it's a ticket in the door.
Also, bear in mind that CS in the real world is often times a far cry from the academic. If you still hate the idea of CS as a career, find something else you love. Teaching comes to mind. Drive a truck. Learn a trade (the plumbers and electricians I know seem to always have $$$ in hand, nice homes, good vehicles for those keeping score, and will always be able to find work).
Whatever makes you happy. Life's to short to work a sh*tty job that you hate. Me, I dislike my job (it ain't no career!), but it's a means to an end. My degree is in Urban Planning, and I work in a CS field. The degree doesn't matter, what will matter is the opportunities that it opens for you. End of soapbox rant.
1. Individual companies knowingly installed these networks, and failed to encrypt and secure the access to them.
2. "Hackers" used their own legally obtained hardware and software to identify these networks.
3. They identified these networks while traveling on a public right of way.
From where I sit, the people who do this are not doing anything wrong UNTIL they begin to wreak havoc on the network(s), and start causing problems for the companies. The onus is on the people setting up the wireless nets to secure them. If individuals can ID these networks, use them, and not cause damage, more power to them.
If the network admins are dumb enough to setup these nets and NOT block unauthorized users, they deserve all the problems that they will inherit.
Finally, why does a brick and mortar office NEED wireless? Isn't cat5 already available to every desktop? Wired nets are invulnerable to wireless hacks, hence, 100% secure against wireless hackers. Well, unless the wireless hackers find a vulnerable wireless net, hack onto your network throught that one.......yadda.:-)
I saw the trailer as well. No dialog, but Darth's breathing was cool. It's all video, and sheds no light on the story. Patience.....

Behind the Scenes

Go easy on Jackson when his films are released. He's obviously done close to everything that a director can do to:
1. Maintain Tolkein's vision.
2. Tell the story as truly as possible
3. Work within the confines of the entertainment industry to do so AND make a movie palatable to Joe Six Pack. (If the film doesn't make money, Hollywood won't support it, fact of life here on Earth, and probably MiddleEarth as well!)
These have all been Herculean tasks, and Peter Jackson has devoted his life to them. I would hope that the LOTR faithful are willing to look past minor transgressions that HAVE to be made to bring a story of this scope and scale to the screen.
Obviously, this will be a far, far cry from the embarressing cartoon of FOTR. Let's hope people can forgive Hobbits that aren't quite rotund enough, elves who aren't quite willowy enough, and dwarves that are perhaps a smidge to tall.
Maybe I'm spoiled by a great ISP, maybe I'm missing the point. Once TCP/IP leaves your NIC and hits the network, does it matter what OS you are running?? So long as your OS can grab a valid IP address from your connection device (cable/DSL/whatever), your ISP shouldn't care what OS you are running!
Do RoadRunner and others REQUIRE some proprietary software? If so, what does this do, and can't you hack around it?
I think my ISP gave me a version of Netscape 3 a long time ago when I was still doing DialUp, they haven't given me anything except great service since!
I used to work for a computer manufacturer. I did tech support, repairs, upgrades, so if a problem was occuring, I'd see it and deal with it.
Our policy was that if a PC came in that had been in 3 times for the same problem, and our repairs had not yet solved the problem OR if a PC kept having continuous hardware related problems, we'd replace the computer from the bottom up.
Satisfied customer able to have their REVENUE GENERATING *note emphasis* computer back in hand was more important to the company than the cost of a replacement PC (which was not cheap!).
Dell, Gateway, etc., probably won't do this because your computer is not directly generating revenue for your company. Yes, you use it to do your job which in turn helps the cause, but the system I outlined above was for Telco systems that brought in a constant stream of dollars.
In my opinion, yes, Dell ought to replace it OR offer a 100% guaranteed (field tested) FIX. You have documented a continuing problem that they have failed to solve. Will they do it, doubt it.

Replay of the original, sure, love it, great fun!
My rant was against people taking what WAS a great, fun thing, jerking it around, retooling it, letting their marketing group have a hack at it, then dumping it back on us..."Look, it's new, it's fresh, it's everything you already loved, but we've made it better!!!" Uh uh...usually doesn't work.
I liked the Ultima games, played II, IV, VII, VIII, and tried to play IX, but it was sooo buggy!
But, does the world need to rehash Ultima I, Bard's Tale, Wolfenstein? Wouldn't these efforts be better directed at creating new, original games, and not recycling old, been there done that plots?
Reminds me of Hollywood dredging up Planet of the Apes, Flintstones, Lost in Space, and any other old movie/TV show that someone has found a way to wring a few more dollars from.
Focus on new and original, rather than rehashes of the past.

Hypocrite. Imagine if MS started charging $X a month for updates to Y. This forum would be LIVID with rage. You can't have it both ways.
Flame me if you must, but following Sept. 11, Dmitry's "crimes" don't seem quite as heinous as previously depicted.
Reason: Oil companies can't make money off of it.
