It is widely accepted that the Hebrew version of the Torah is the original. One of the earliest complete translations that is available to us is the Aramaic translation that is usually printed along-side the Hebrew in the Chumash. It is also documented that there was a Greek translation made by the Rabbis in the Talmudic era. Neither translation is literal. Why would you think the KJV version, done over a thousand years later, to a language that is not nearly as similar to Hebrew as the above-mentioned languages would be at all accurate in comparison?

  5. Re:Yup! on Has Cosmology Been Solved? · · Score: 1

Considering that the KJV of the Bible is a translation of a text that was known to have been editted many times in history, it would be foolish to take it literally. In the case of the Torah, it was known to Talmudic scholars that the exact text had changed over the years. No copyist is perfect, and mistakes were introduced. It is also possible, though perhaps not very likely, that intentional changes were made. I think it's not likely because many different copies existed to be compared. Intentional changes tend to stand out.

So using a counterfeit copy of an OS in a situation that allows the OS to kill someone (let them die) will get me life in prison, but using a legitimate copy of the same OS not getting the publisher of the OS fined, much less any jail time, is somehow OK?

We do not need a new law to cover negligence with respect to death. Such an act is called manslaughter and is already legal. This part of the bill is nothing more than an attempt to make copyright violation literally worse than killing someone.

There is no longer a value placed on human life. Only your potential to increase profits has any meaning. You don't see anything wrong with this?

But arranging for a physical representation of the same information, using my own resources, is not stealing. It is only illegal because of copyright law.

My own opinion is that copyright law only exists to make the creation of new works economically feasible. So long as I do not harm anyone's ability to make a living (and you don't need upteen millions of dollars to live), I feel no qualms about violating copyright. I pay for anything I in turn use to make money. Anything else is pretty much fair game to me.
