I've read this post in it's entirety, and normally would not do this as I think that the person posting is fully aware of the logistics and political/legal happenings required to respond. But I would like to respond to one point:
As far as getting rescue supplies in and second stage rescue operations setup - yes, it could have been done better I feel sure. Yet at the same time, in order to have a chopper operating to do rescue, you need to setup a FARP where the chopper can fuel up. You need base facilities for routine maintenance and mechanical failures to be handled (we've seen remarkably few catastrophic failures given the number of rescue sorties and presumably pilot duty schedules). Pilots need to sleep and be fed as do mechanics and SAR techs. All in a secure area. That takes a lot of logistics, just to get these sorts of FARPs setup. And it takes time. It takes time for an Aircraft Carrier or Amphibious Assault ship to steam to the area. It takes time for the army engineers to clear roads to let larger relief vehicles in. NO wasn't the only place hit, many of the roads into new orleans would be absolutely impassable.
I agree. But this article quoted from a third party web site below, makes you wonder how many thumbs were in asses at the top:
"The USS Bataan, a 844-foot ship designed to dispatch Marines in amphibious assaults, has helicopters, doctors, hospital beds, food and water. It also can make its own water, up to 100,000 gallons a day. And it just happened to be in the Gulf of Mexico when Katrina came roaring ashore. The Bataan rode out the storm and then followed it toward shore, awaiting relief orders. Helicopter pilots flying from its deck were some of the first to begin plucking stranded New Orleans residents. But now the Bataan's hospital facilities, including six operating rooms and beds for 600 patients, are empty."
The good films aren't at the metroplex. They're at the small indie theaters. If a person wants to go see something without rehashed formulaic ideas. The outlet is there. If you care about the story or the art of filmmaking, and still be entertained the outlet is there.
But the average moviegoer might not get that the larger the ad blitz, the worse the movie actually is. This isn't always the case, but a fair amount of the time it is. But I suspect the average moviegoer doesn't like/love film; they want to be entertained. And that's fine, but what does it say when they don't even want to see what's on the big screen? Think about the most entertaing film out right now... March of The Penguins, probably. And initially it wasn't shown in major theaters.
I can't think of a film I've seen at the metroplex in a few years that I was that anxious to see (other than Spider Man, and MAYBE Kill Bill.), but I can think of quite a few memorable "art house" moments (Howl's Moving Castle, Murderball, Osama...). Word of mouth is still the best way to have a good movie experience.
Add to that the potential ability to acquire rights for commercial operations in space, the potential (yes, years off) to fabricate in zero gravity, resource mining on the moon...on and on
There is money to be made if the technology is perfected, and it is relatively cheap to operate in space say..in 50 years or so. We won't see it, but it's coming.
Most Americans thought slavery was a good thing and that "people of color" should not have the same rights as those who were not "people of color."
So, I'm afraid I have no clue what point you were trying to make.... Does 50.00000001% or 99.999999999% make it *right*? Of course not. I wonder how barbaric we will look 50, 100, or 150 years from now.
You mean those Americans who interpreted and used Scripture to reinforce that slavery was ok? It's ok, because there were Americans at that time who's religious conviction was questioned because they argued that (and in some cases, risked life and limb to ensure) that those who were enslaved should be freed and afforded the protections of white male Americans. Americans as a whole seemed to buy into the notion of a Manifest Destiny as well.
Fast forward to today, and I don't see anyone not in favor of embryonic stem cell research harboring or hell implanting themselves with fertilized eggs to birth these unrealized humans. It's hard enough to get them to adopt the multitudes of unwanted Children here in the United States. Get in where you fit in, I suppose.
How barbaric it is will be judged as in due time, who knows. There's so much to judge from this time. Wars for oil; the WHOLE of faux religious extremism; democracy itself; the treatment and acceptance of homosexuals, on and on. I don't know.
Don't get me wrong; having a moral center is important. To be honest, in ways it is at the heart of our humanity. Yet that has to be balanced with the GOOD of humanity as a whole, realizing that the majority of it may not be in agreement with your own compass.
This "article" is oversimplification followed by oversimplification. No one arbitrarily hates M$ simply because they're the big gorilla; rather the things they have done NOT in the name of ease of use, but in the name of extending the M$ hemegony.
On A personal note, I don't buy Mac because the company is Apple (although I do have a greater appreciation for the company) or the CEO is Steve Jobs (which MIGHT actually be a reason to NOT buy Apple). I do it because it makes my computing life easier and makes me more productive.
Well good thing I don't have to depend on your judgement.

You get the point. I remember pulling in my daughter's day care listening to The Chairman and this woman saying "I'm glad someone listens to REAL music, all my kids listen to is RAP." I felt compelled to frisbee my Talib Kweli CD at her as I have a love for music, not its' genres. There's music I may not like, but i don't begrudge it as not music.
What's funny is that eventually all the examples listed eventually got thier respect, most of which once white artists got in the market and performed the music. With hip hop, 30 years down and that's still not the case. Well, not in numbers of artists, but the guy that moves the most units is white. 20 years from now, it'll be something else That we'll stratify as not music.
That doesn't make any sense considering Spielberg directed ALL THREE Raiders films, and who was the producer? Lucas... They all came after ESB. There's got to be more to it than the director's guild.
specifically, the director's guild will not allow more than one director to be given credit for a movie. it really didn't have anything to do with frank miller himself or robert rodriguez. rodriguez has quit and rejoined the director's guild before. it's just one of those little annoyances that they go through. i believe he quit before when he participated in the movie "five rooms". since then, he rejoined, and quit again for sin city.
That can't be right. Allen and Albert Hughes directed Menace to Society, Dead Presidents, American Pimp and From Hell, and are both credited. The above doesn't make sense.
Please, you don't "own" ANYTHING with iTunes either. You just get a different license (burnable to CD, not transferable to other PC).
Don't believe me? See what happens when you crash your hard drive.
I don't have a problem with this: the titles I d/l with iTunes I backup en-masse to another media form. Long as I have my login and pass to authenticate the computer I play them on, it's been fine.
Anyway, if you want the same rights as iTunes, Yahoo has that too (at $0.79/song).
Lot of good that does me. I'm a Mac user. Yahoo doesn't support us.
To me, this is the best of both worlds; you can sample/download as many songs as you want for $5/month and if you find something you really like, you can buy that for $0.79 so that you can burn it on CD. AND you can download it to the latest WMA players. Isn't choice supposed to be a good thing?
Ever try playing back Windows Media anything on a slightly older Mac?:P Oh wait, none of these sites support my OS. Where's the choice?
I own an iPod. Actually, two. I rip most of my CD's and buy from iTMS. While I'm not nuts about DRM (I'm up against the five computer limit allowed), I also don't see a viable alternative. WMA is unacceptable.
Why? Well, I also own several G4 Power Macs running OS X. If you've ever used WMP on a Mac, you'll know it performs horribly. Even if it's the only thing running. I can imagine how WMA files will. On my linux boxes, I don't have a supported option. no iTMS, no nothing.
Yahoo's music service doesn't support my OS of choice. Now, should I bitch and complain that they need to "open" it up? Or, am I served just as well by iTMS (the devil I know) and can realize, that they are somply catering to the majority?

All the railing I've seen in this thread about DRM, about choice, about how easy it is to license WMA... it's does not run/work well on a Mac. it does not run/work at all on linux. It also is not supported via these music stores on the Mac. They don't have a snazzy little front end. So isn't all the bitching about Apple's DRM not providing choice BS? You don't get choice of any other OS with Yahoo or Napster, so if I did have a Rio (which I do, but dont use anymore), I'm still a Mac user, so I'm locked out.
Apple provides that interface for it's own OS (remember iTunes and by default iPods were Mac only for awhile) as well as Windows and I PRAY for Linux soon. So yeah, I have to live with thier DRM, but at least they service my need. To the others Mac users don't exist.
Technically, we *all* pay for gas, in at least two ways. One is the environmental cost, since lower fuel efficiency means higher emissions. And two is the increase in demand which causes all gas prices to increase, not just the gas prices for people who drive SUVs.
Off topic, but...
Don't forget that third way: Making sure the spigots are open in foriegn countries in the name of national security. Freedom isn't free. And neither is oil even though it's only about the same price as a gallon of milk.
It gets downright frustrating that Congress is debating DST as part of an energy policy versus investing in say an alternative fuel infrastructure, and taking steps to wean us off the oil teat.
You are noting that this is in respone to the parent right, which referred it entering the wireless game as a telco, right? That it can be done, right?
How is the number of people in the US relevant? What matters is the percentage of criminals who are black. I would expect the percentage of executed persons who are black to be roughly the same
This is WILDLY off topic, but here goes:
It's relevant because the disproportionate number of African Americans in prison dramatically increased with the drug "epidemic" in the mid 80's and anti drug legislation. As a side regarding that, when you have those same laws, not applied to those higher up the distribution channel it depends on who you want to label a criminal. It appears your definition is that if you havent been convicted but your hands are dirty, you're not a criminal.
The prison population as a whole is just as irrelevant if you take that into account. You can't base who gets executed versus who is in the system. You have to do it by similar crimes.
Fair enough. Then let us set that aside, and deal only with offenses of a capital nature. When dealing with the federal death penalty, it's hard to say that there is significant bias. However, the states, that's a different story.

You think that it'll get better in college ? Nope, wrong. In adulthood ? Nope. Wherever you go, you are surrounded by the same poisoned atmosphere when people realise you think faster than they do. When you're that bright, yu soon understand what it was to be suspect of wichcraft.
Look at this thread : full of hatred against those folks, because they dare claim they're smart. Would they have claimed any other talent such as music or painting, there would be applauses of joy, but logical intelligence must be hidden.
It's not that it must be hidden, it's that you must not flaunt it at the expense of others. Insulting the intelligence of others even in a catharic manner is unacceptable. Half of life is getting along with other people. With making sure others feel as though they are part of the process.
I absolutely agree that bright children have it hard. Does it suck that people of "average intelligence" engage in this behavior? Yes. Does it give a person based on thier intellect the right to return the favor? No. To put it in the terms of my grandmother (who only had an 8th grade education); Smart kids tend to have a lot of "book sense", but no "common sense". And trust me, growing up she tossed that one at me enough that it eventually stuck.
I don't think there's many people that use this forum that haven't been ostracized due to thier percieved intellect. And a fair number I can assure you, don't have that all important "common sense". In order to succeed socially, you have to be people savvy to an extent; and maintain an attitude of juggling the egos of others, not adding to or inflaming thier insecurities.
It's one thing to proclaim how bright you are, and to execute/apply that intellect at the expense of others. It is another simply to note that you are a person that knows a fair amount, but can always learn something else. Something new.
As for me, I've seen a lot of credentials tossed about in this conversation. I have some. Not that they mean much. I noted that long ago. It's not an accurate indicator of intellect.
I've also been the kid ostracized for being bright. Add on to that culturally ostracized for showing interest in things my peers considered 'white' (although I don't agree with his outlook on it, read John McWhorter's "Losing The Race: Self Sabotage In Black America" for more on that). I even remember thinking that indeed, I am brighter than most. But most of all, I remember my grandmother telling me that I may be bright, but I still don't know shit.
If contestants do not have direct access to LinuxPPC64 platforms such as IBM eServer or Apple Power Mac G5 to develop or port on, community-based resources may be found at the University of Portland School of Engineering.
What about on a G4, using the Altivec extensions? Wouldn't this suffice? 64 or 32 bit is OK according to IBM, but optimized for 64. Won't a G4 suffice?
