What kills me is the number of posters lighting into Apple for having a closed system. And that's what it is. The Mac, closed system. iPod iTunes, closed system.

But you've got Yahoo, Napster and 50 million PlaysForSure groups complaining that Apple won't license FairPlay to them, so that they can compete. And I don't blame Apple. Call me a fanboy if you want.

If I were Apple, I'd do the same damn thing. None of those who want to get in on things have supported Apple's hardware very well or at all, have they? Yahoo hasn't upgraded their version of Messenger for Mac in 3 years. How much do you want to bet that none of these stores supports Mac users? I have a non iPod branded music player; can I go to their sites and download music? No. Microsoft doesn't even MAKE Media Player for Mac anymore, and when they did, it sucked. And how ironic it is that the iPod craze is fueling Apple hardware sales?

The initial iPod wasn't even PC compatible. iTMS either. My only choice for stateside mainstream purchased music was iTunes. They were created in part, to offer to Mac users what PC users were getting. They were getting it poorly, but hey. But as usual, the minute you open up your product to those who poo poo it and talk about Mac users as fringe players it's a different story. The iPod takes off, and people are living the iLife.

Apple licensed FairPlay (in some form) to Motorola. There was a long relationship there; up until Motorola spun off Freescale, Moto chips were driving Macs. Same with HP. For all it's flaws, HP imaging hardware always had decent Mac support. Apple licensed the HP branded iPod. HP canned the agreement, not Apple. That tells me Apple is willing to deal with others. BUt they are under no obligation to deal with those who aren't bringing shit to the table or halfway support their hardware.

What I'm trying to say is, that AFAIK, Apple will not allow Creative to develop a direct iPod comptetitor (because it won't allow them to play the music they purchse on ITunes) -- which is a monopoly."

Ok by that logic, as a Mac owner, I should be able to sue Yahoo, Napster and the rest for not having a Mac client that will support my old 64 MB Rio (which won't play WMA files), and Microsoft for not making IE for the Mac.

I think part of that is backlash. "You've been discriminated against? Boo Hoo. It's not like you won't land on your feet." I'm not saying it's right; personally I think it's BS. Will it lead to a different kind of backlash? I don't know. I don't think so; racism and sexism is too deeply ingrained in us. Nowadays it's not called discrimination. It's disguised under "Preference". Slap a new word on it and you might get a few lemon faces, but who cares, really. "I prefer to hire blacks in order to maintain diversity." "We prefer to remain and exclusive club, and as a private institution...." "I prefer to not date interacially..."

    Whatever. It's the same shit.

Yet, I can understand it. Just as well as I can understand the other side. I think I've shared in a prior post an experience from university regarding a young white male in class who took issue with Affirmative Action. He questioned "how much longer do we have to made exceptions for certain people?" inferring thatat the time (this was the early 90's) 30 years had been enough. I, wishing I could respond to his comment was immediately tempted to say "How about another 400 years?" To quote Beatrix Kiddo, I think that would make things just about square. Now that I'm little older, I'm not quite that... adamant. Yet there are reasons for that. Here in the US there's never been healing over discrimination, slavery, sufferage; none of that. We just lie to ourselves, don't bother to change attitudes, just, bury them a bit.

So you've got people, depending on where they sit on those particular issue, still sniping. You've got people claiming reverse racism (which is their right; one should not discriminate, period) when there still is an inherent bias in their favor. You've got minorities who do abuse the system (and who should be let go). You've got women who believe that in a white male dominated workforce, they've got to display bigger balls than the fellas around her to get respect. You've got African Americans who will testify to you that in the workplace and in schools who will tell you that they have to work TWICE as hard as the next non minority, or be percieved as lazy.

I've seen posts in this thread that have marginalized members of several races, and not enough talking about the good Equal Opportunity does. I've also not seen many posts referring to the reality that in many ways there's still an ol' boy network. It's not mentioned that women are the greatest beneficiaries of Affirmative Action, which has done a world of good.

Dr. King's dream wasn't solely a racial one; It was primarily a class one. It just so happened that his race was on the lowest level of the social ladder here in the U.S., and here was where he made his start. Among his own people. He didn't magically morph into an anti war guy in the last few years of his life; He was consistent throughout it. I've only taken off MLK day twice, and that was when I worked in government. Why? Well, I don't think that's a way of honoring the man. I think I need to work, and if necessary by example force those who work around me with those inherent prejudices to see me as a man; a capable equal and respect me as such. Until that day, AA needs to be around.

Problem is, there's a LOT of average slashdotters. ;) I agree with a precedent policy of some sort; those who are viable contributors and submit stories that fit within the lines have earned a reputation. Those who haven't necessarily been good students should be scrutinized to a greater degree; if the submission is valid (or meets the snuff of the powers that be then it should be allowed to pass.

Those of us reading (aside from the dupes or obvious bad "engrish" in some of the submissions) should have a bit more faith in the intent of the mods. And try to keep the conversations about the material, and not the person providing the information.

Actually its funny, even in Silicon Valley, I have a hard time finding someone techy enough to keep up who is also single and attractive. I was at a shindig at SF City Hall Friday night and someone asked me *why* I'd want to date someone in the same field. Perhaps because previous non-techie boyfriends see me doing anything on the laptop (I'm on call sometimes afterall) and assume I'm just playing computer games and ignoring them.

Try as i might through the years, I've not found an abundance of "geek girls" who aren't either guilty of the same lack of social skills (or tact) as geek guys, or ruled by a (and I hate to put it this way) social "preference" that excluded me as an acceptable dating partner (mainly race, possibly cultural). It's a trip to hear anyone decry the lack of available "attractive" people, and know they deem your available, attractive ass as unacceptable to bring home.

It's just as hard to find a person with balance. Hence, I've never dated a person with a CS or other IT background. Sometimes that's a blessing. Sometimes it's not. My educational background was arts (English Lit major) related, but I was always a "geek". So, most I've dated have come from that background. Add to that, I'm a single dad approaching mid 30's... finding an accepting or similarly circumstanced intellectually well-rounded geek girl is slim to none. Oh I'm sure eventually I'll find someone (and so will you); I'm just stating and acknowledging that it's tough.
