The dominant monkey obviously saw the threat of technology, they saw what it'd done to the more advanced "hairless" apes, they just didnt want to expose themeselves to Itnernet sweepstakes, deals on sharp kitchen knives, penis growth shams etc..
We can learn something from this Monkey.. only problem is a basic rock would do little damage to the IBM Model M keyboard im using..
50 years from now, there'll be a carefully preserved PC in a museum, and they'll spend hours trying to figure out why their Windows display crashes after a few hours, not relising that this is a normal feature of the OS:)
I hope that I'll be able to use software like this in conjunction with spam assassin or messgewall, I use messagewall ( http://www.messagewall.org ) primarily in front of my MTA and it does a reasonable job of identifying obvious junk as well as doing basic virus scanning on incoming & outgoing email.
Amazing how much spam a few posts to some newsgroups generate, I create a new alias just for news every now and then to control the amount of spam I get, just delete the old alias and the spam bounces off the MTA..
I applaud the project, every cool idea!
If only we couldnt throw the spammers in the tar pit.. that'd slow em down:)
I have always liked vector imaging, being able to export it as a raster image or keep it as a vector to be resized and manipulated easily.
After all, complex 3D models rendered for video presentations, simulations and movies are just complex vectors and can allow easy and proportional scaling.
Not to mention that most vector data compresses alot more than storing a high resolution raster image.
I am all for an open/portable format thats compatable from CAD programs through rendering/moddeling software and raster paint packages. Postscript can do some of this but I find postscript a little too bloated in alot of cases..
"Does that mean the the show's [beyond2000.com] site has just been left stale all these years?"
To be honest I havent seen the show since the early 90's, weather theyre been moved to some obscure cable channel or what I dont know..
The info on the show hasnt been updated since March 2002 so theyre not exactly good at keeping their info 100% up to date on their website in any case..
Being an Australian, I have only seen this show a dozen times, but Tomorrow's World really did capture alot of stuff that wouldnt have been seen on other science programs..
In Australia we used to have "Beyond 2000" which ended a almost 10 years ago or so, didnt get quite as nerdy as TM though..
Tomorrow's world will be missed.. by those who watched it... and those who poked fun at it:)
I dont know why they still use the CSS encryption, its been proven to be easily circumvented..
Just release new titles with no encryption - those that care enough to copy a DVD will still do it regardless of CSS..
Personlly, I buy the DVD's I wish to watch.. ones I dont want to own I rent and some of them (Like the movie: Dungeons & Dragons) wouldnt eb worth wasting a blank media on:)
They should ditch region coding too.. but thats another argument.
It raises an interesting possibility - with a new way of forming high density magnetic fields I wonder if we'll see a return to Megneto Optical media or weather the two will stay seperate..
It'd certainly be interesting to get more storage out of yer cd sized media if you could use the plastics as a storage medium as well as the optical layer..
Maybe its a crazy idea..
Somebody will probably take this idea and ger rich off it none the less:)
Well, its all well and good having a case that can do a diagnosis in 2 minutes..
But, what about lag?
Or worse still.. Your patient get's the "Ping of death"..
Or worse still.. somebody posts a link to the medical case on Slashdot and your examination is not only viewed by thousands of people but the only useful information returned to the mobile terminal is "In russia.. You examine your mobile medical case!"
Alston should simply not be in the role he is in, somebody with a 'clue' should be.
I rarely rant, but I truely think his attitude is 'ignorance is bliss'.
Stupid amounts of Tax payers money is wasted on reports that seem to favor the big T (Also know as Telstra) One can be cynical into thinking this is done to "fatten up" Telstra for the rest of it to be sold to the public as shares.
For those who dont know, and its probably been covered above, Telstra is the largest telecomminications and data carrier in Australia - Has a Monopoly on 80% of all comms infastructure, originally owned by the Taxpayers of Australia, the government saw it fit to sell it back to us!! 1/3 of Telstra remains in Government hands.
Genius, like it to you buying a VCR, somebody stealing it from you and then offering you to buy it from them, effectivly paying for it again..
"Ya see Jimmy, ya gets the.c files now, half now, half later... thens ya gets the.h files and the configure script.. donts be trying anything funny eh Jimmy?"
I am very careful, and trustign code from the authors/primary distribution site has in recent times (e.g. in the case of Sendmail 8.12.6) prooven that you cant trust the distribution point, you need to check that the version thats there is the version the authors inteded to send out (MD5 checksums are the widest accepted way of doign this)
But a bit more security around the fileservers and webservers where these files are distribtued from would never go astray.

Damnit IBM, damnit all to hell!!
I gotta get me one of these!
Beowulf cluster of these? Anyone? Anyone?
But seriously, linux or bsd on one of these babies would make walking around your co-lo room doing trivial maintenence on boxes would be awesome..
Harddrive big enough to do network installs off on client sites etc..
Rock on!!
I think Microsoft have gone a little overboard this time.. maybe they got the licence code crossed with the auto save..
"It has been fifteen minutes since you last entered your licence number, would you like to enter it again now? [Yes] [Yes] or [YES!]"

Scary that theres still alot of web pages out there that look like they're NSCA Mosaic compliant
Just the other day I saw a site with a "Netscape 2.0 NOW!" graphic on it..
Damnit.. I wanna see Archie back.. I wanna see a Yahoo thats updated by hand and no database dagnabit!!

Yet another reason not to buy CD's anymore!
Not that there is much worth buying these days anyhow
Wonder whats next?
"Sir, we're happy to sell this new album to you - just piss in this specimin jar and supply a drop of blood on the application provided..."
Jeez!

I am surprised there isn't a rogue bunch of do-gooder MPAA avocate programmers out there building a ReCSS..
You know.. to reprotect all those unprotected movies out there in the ether..
Then the MPAA could sue everyone that DOESN'T include a copy of "ReCSS" on their website
Honest officer.. I wasnt talking and driving at the same time.
I was detecting traffic jams.. Just doing my bit!

Heh..
What about Mr Lucas, the local butcher, prevayor of all things meat?
I bet alot of SPAM originates from him, and your never sure of its source.. it could have come from anywhere..
It could be local or it could be foreign spam..
I say we arrange a protest at his door and block any spam originating from his premesis, and only let valid meat products through..
To the owner of a Blue Mitsubishi Eclipse licence plate ERQ-1343, you left your lights on.
This time im being prepared!
A Rocket just like Hans Zarkov made.. just incase these babies get too close!
Oh sure, your laughing now.. im not sharing my moon rocket with anyone!
I'd like to see more done with the International Space Station, certainly some potential there for related space exploration.
Where the funding ends up is anyoens guess though..
