In a course in computer engineering, we once had to do group presentations and reports on some research topic of interest. We were a group of 3 so we divided the three reports with each person being the primary writer for one of the reports. I knew my teammates from other classes but imagine my surprise reading the report of one of them. I was just amazed at the quality of the report and his command of english given the limited experience that he had. But he didn't cite any quotes in the report for all the references that he used. So I decided to do a google search on a few key phrases so they could he properly cited. Then lo and behold I enter one phrase and the entire first 4 pages of the report are literal cut and paste from something on the internet. Overall on the 10+ page report maybe 90% was plagerized. I was freaked out a the possiblity of putting my name on the report as a team project. I tried to get him to understand that what he did was wrong but he didn't think it was a big deal. Eventually we did pressure him to rewrite it in his own words. I shudder at the thought of what he did for his master's thesis!

Here are some reasons people use a spreadsheet:

    * There are no complex interrelations to the data. Not complex enough to normalize. Maybe just a bunch of key/attribute relationships.

    * Many databases are client/server with a server always running in the background. Why run yet another service when you do something infrequently.

    * The user interfaces to many databases are not user friendly. Spreadsheet allow for ease of entry without any coding. Many will auto-expand what you type with similar text above it. Many will provide pulldown menus to do basic queries.

I thought the 2600 had a line buffer. Basically a 40 or 80 bit shift register into which the pixels are written and then they are written to the video screen. This is my recollection from a presentation that the creator of the 2600 (the same guy who did the Amiga I think) had on the hardware internals.

Okay this is kind of off topic but anyway... My impression of STTNG was that it was pretty modern but then recently started watching it more frequently ever since getting a Tivo. I then realize that the first episode of STTNG came around 16 years ago! I look at many of the early episodes and it just looks so odd. There are people with afro hair cuts and women in short-short skirts like in The Original Star Trek. Geordi is not even the chief engineer... there are all these "nobodys" in engineering. The comm signal is the whistling note from the original. The computer special effects are still primitive since computers are still not prominent. It just looks so out of place compare to the more recent episodes that we see more often. Anyone get the same impression?

That looks like the only surefire solution right now. A recent newspaper article in San Francisco talked about excessive spending in city government. A security guard at the county hospital got $202K in wages after overtime. Basically to sit around a kick a few bums back into the street. And there is nothing illegal in what this guy did and the city gov't doesn't expect it to change. In another case, a coin machine technician gets paid $88K in wages yet goes and steals from the coin boxes. When he is caught, he is put on paid leave while they 'investigate'.

Many of these jobs are better paying than programmer jobs plus they will never be outsourced. We just need to get a law passed to more of us can join the gravy train.
