    Lack of personal anecdotal evidence doesn't meam the claims are unjustified by a long shot. Here's some scientific proof of how quickly unpatched Windows systems with internet connections can be infected.

    Being behind a router's NAT is in fact similar to a firewall's protection. Just because your geek friends have routers doesn't make your anecdotal experience the norm.

    On my old P-133 from my university days, the turbo button toggled the "1" on and off on the front LED that showed the CPU clock speed. Other guys in the dorm were convinced games would run better with the turbo button on.

    Well there's not much you can do about your gender, but why not take advantage of profiling and get a car less likely to be stolen and stereotyped? It's why I bought a Hyundai.

    Up until recently males age 16-25 were the worst catagory according to the insurance companies. Now Females in the same age group have reached parity with the their male counterparts and if the trends of the last 10 years continue they, will soon overtake them.

    You forgot to add "Did you know that disco record sales were up 400% for the year ending 1976? If these trends continues... AAY!"

    Just for some real-world validation, I got my first 2 jobs out of school using my myname@yahoo.com for my contact email address. Running your own mail server is not a prerequisite to getting a tech job (even though I now do just that).

    Yes, but if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck... The idea was/is to put the bleeding-edge, freshly released, little-tested code from open source projects in one place. You tell me what that implies.

    Only in the same sense that lots of people have called for Howard Stern to be removed (that is, only a few loudmouths). Even though Don Cherry is as "cartoon character" as Michael Moore or Rush Limbaugh, he's taken less seriously. Do you think people watch Coach's Corner for reporting?!

    Anyways, the American and Canadian notions of right and left are incompatible in many ways, and most of the posts in this entire thread are off-topic so I'll shut up now.

    And I've used package managers, don't like them that well because I'm not quite sure what they did with all of the files. Probably my lack of experience with package managers and distrust of non command line based tools.

    I used to share your distrust of package managers after Redhat 6.0's RPM database got irreparably corrupt and made installing, uninstalling or even querying impossible. However, things have come a long way since. RPM, urpmi and apt are all command-line tools that almost never cause problems for me. There's gotta be a CLI to Yast as well (some SuSE user back me up here).

    rpm -qL will give you a nice list of all the files installed by a particular package. This is really useful stuff.

    This is my least favourite part of discussions like these -- cluebies that seem to think posting a link is going to bring the wrath of God down on a site that only they think they know about. I can understand this on IRC or a torrent site's forum, but I used to expect better than this on Slashdot.

    The MPAA knew about your favourite .torrent site before you did!

    While this post is rather incoherent, the idea is a good one IMHO and I'd hold my nose and mod it up if I had points -- some sort of a tree structure showing prerequisites would be very helpful for less structured (read: non-engineering) programs.

    You certainly can at the end of a model year. In 2001 when new '02s had just come out I had my choice of a Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent for $9995CDN. I doubt they've inflated 20% since then.
