Sorry, that CPU will never decrease in price. It will be phased out while remaining at its current price. I recommend combing EBay and Craigslist for a used one if you are convinced this is what you want.
The difference with this card in comparison to the GeForce 9600GT is that it uses a G94-350/359 55nm GPU and has the ability to switch into "idle" mode. Additionally, a new PCB design now allows for phase switching, no longer has a 6-pin power connector, and runs a 1.0v core at ultra low voltage. In 3D mode, the card's power consumption can be reduced down to 40 percent, and 60 percent in normal idle mode.
I'm going to call bullshit although I'm not a huge Dell fan. I got an email today for a 15" laptop for $479. The specs suck but there you have it, no non-netbook company from any other manufacturer I know of is at this price. The lowest of the low in price and components but that's all anyone can afford to buy these days.
Terrific post that completely invalidates the argument made in the article.
Thanks for reminding me of the adventures of Bayou Billy. I actually beat the game in my elementary school days since my game library was small which gave me a lot of time to play it. A great example of an awesomely bad game, with dialogue as bad as any other example you could name.
Actually, every movie The Angry Nintendo Nerd has ever featured could qualify (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR OLD SCHOOL NES FANS).
There's no on-board video that will outperform your 6600GT. You go to Core2Duo while preserving your RAM and video card though by going with this board:
This'll let you upgrade later to DDR2 and a PCI-e vid card later. Even supports quad core if you want to go there.
(pardon the off-topicness, but this set up saved me a ton of money by upgrading in phases and I like sharing it with people who will benefit from doing the same)
Facebook akin to a system where users are provided access to everything needed to do their jobs and nothing more, while Myspace is like giving everyone root access and telling them to run with it. Which would you rather admin?
I seconded ideas on ideastorm that suggested Dell get rid of this stupid division between Latitude and Inspiron, but who knows if that will ever happen.
It won't and they shouldn't. Corporations need a stable platform with business-focused features (battery life for road warriors, biometrics, next-day on-site support), while consumers demand the latest, greatest and especially cheapest.
The corporate market is Dell's bread and butter and they make a shit-ton of money there. Why the hell would they change to Apple's model which only has a drop in the ocean in that space?
If I'd gone Intel, I'd have had to get DDR2 memory, which would have basically doubled the price for similar performance. As it was, I could re-use the memory I had.
There are motherboards that allow you to use DDR RAM with a Core 2 Duo CPU (example: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=775Dua l-VSTA&s=n ), I believe Anandtech or Toms Hardware had some benchmarks that showed the performance difference from using DDR RAM in one of these boards was negligable.
They haven't been produced in some time. I would love to get a dual-core 939, but they aren't in stock in any store in Canada AFAICT. OTOH the power consumption of any 939 X2 CPU is much higher than the newer AM2 chips.

I understand that this new socket (LGA 1156) will support both i5 and i7 CPU's
You understand wrong. They are socket-incompatible, you need to go all-in on one or the other.
Time for a trade-in? nVidia has released a low-power 9600GT that doesn't even need the PCI-E power connector anymore.

The sweet spot is still the ATI 4670 IMHO
No we can't do any better because the intermediary is not willing! Choose a different intermediary!
I have never seen any definition of acronym that states the resulting string must be pronouncable as a word.
Any initialism is pronounceable as a word (for instance, MAGL rhymes with bagel)
Gotta nit with your correction, the GP was right. The >200GB/month service IS $40, the capped (200GB) service is $29.95.

Why settle for a ratio near infinity when it can BE infinity? Video cards with fans are for chumps only. Vote with your wallet.

Then I probably blew more than a man day on getting Linux up
I don't know what you have planned for tonight, Homer, but you can count me out.
Hilariously, the hard drive recommended on their top end systems is very close to failing to cross the 1GB/dollar threshold:

It does look kinda cool, but doesn't seem to meet the poster's GPL requirement
su is weird now?
Agreed. Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting would fall into this category.

I'm far from a GM fanboy, but why would something the long-dead CEO of GM said over 50 years ago matter today?
I'm a strong supporter (and holder) of LPI certification, but I agree that Red Hat training/certification is the best fit for your situation.
The hands-on nature of training for and achieving RHCT is ideal for staff who are likely troubleshooting systems they themselves did not set up.

Off by one letter? Who cares!
Now excuse me while I go back to kernel hacking in D.
NOT ONE of their offerings of the Turion x2 comes with 512k of L2, and comes with 64K of L1
Still wrong.
L1 cache: 64 + 64 KiB (data + instructions) per core
* TL-50: 1600 MHz (256 KiB L2-Cache per core)
* TL-52: 1600 MHz (512 KiB L2-Cache per core)
* TL-56: 1800 MHz (512 KiB L2-Cache per core)
* TL-60: 2000 MHz (512 KiB L2-Cache per core)
And regardless, the difference in architecture between Core and Turion chips makes a direct comparison of L1/L2 cache like apples to oranges.
If I'd gone Intel, I'd have had to get DDR2 memory, which would have basically doubled the price for similar performance. As it was, I could re-use the memory I had.

Frankly, the flash-the-bios-in-Windows option seems pretty appealing.
Not to Linux users it isn't!
That's all well and good, but I still stand by my childhood assessment of loving this film for the boobies!
