I have ATT as a phone only. No smart phone, no camera, no data plan. They somehow seem to slam me on a regular basis and assume my plan includes data by default. I have to call them once in a while asking how I got a SMS with no data contract. When the data plan goes away again, so does any 3rd party billing if any.

I text with my Google Voice for free, not on a data plan + SMS pn top.

On the motorhome, the longer I can leave the gas generator shut off the better I and my neighbors like it. Besides, electric generation with a motorhome genset is not in parity with local grid rates, thus the payback is measured in a few summers on the road.

In a review with the community leaders, they invited them to tour the facilities while they measured the field strength. The tour revealied that there was no equipment installed. The competing standards are SIP, standard audio codecs, and H.264 video confrencing.

Skype is propritory. SIP is standards based. Skype is for Skype only with payments required to make (Skype out) and/or receive (skype in) calls to normal telephone. Skype out and Skype in can be only purchased from one vendor.

Unlike Skype, a SIP provider can provide any and/or all of the components. Depending on provider (many) you can mix and match as you like.

Free SIP accounts can be obtined from Ekiga, Iptel, ippi, and others. Many provide free voicemail, and other features such as a gateway to Google Voice and Skype. Call your SIP friends, your Google Talk Friends, and Skype friends all with the same provider.. (personal plug.. ippi.com provides a free skype and google talk gateways) Google it.

Free softphones compatible with SIP are numerous, some of which enable encryption, including the one featured in this slashdot article. Free softphones can be obtained from Ekiga, Twinkle, iptel, ippi, and others.

Hardware phones compatibe with SIP are numberous including offerings from Cisco;/Linksis, Grandstream, Panasonic, and others. No need to keep your computer on to use it. Some even include a vidoe phone.

There are many providers of DID numbers that do the same as Skype in. You can have multiple numbers including 800, local, overseas, etc. Some providers even offer a DID number for free. IPkall is a good source for a free USA phone number. Think Skype-in but free.

You can buy a calling plan to permit placing calls. This is generaly not free, but quite cost effective.

You can tie them together in your own free open source PBX.. such as Asterisk.

If you want to buy an all in one package plan, providers such as Century Link, Comcast, Magic Jack, Ooma, Net2Phone, Vonage etc all offer complete packages for plug and play operation with less flexibility than mix and match.

Combining SIP and Google Talk allows me to place calls from Google, and receive my calls on a VOIP phone, even whtn the computer is off. After moving to SIP, I hardly use Skype at all.

Sitting on a major junction on the backbone at work shows a fast last mile isn't that great when many smaller ISP's under buy connection to the backbone, or servers are virtualized instead of clustered. Facebook runs fast, but big deal. A faster connection is of little use for Netflix or Hulu if normal broadband is enough to prevent pauses for buffering.

Price the fiber for the better streaming load times. Most potential customers don/t want to pay for commercial server bandwidth when the TOS limit it to consumer media consumption.

Offer it with IPV6 static IP's, encourage use of Asterisk or other services for your IP phones home and abroad. Offer secure tunneling for work at home. Allow hosting your own video conference on your own server. In other words show value for the bandwidth beyond a better ping time in a game, or Netflix load time. Offer it with your own domain name. Advertise it for work at home, not home media consumption.

$35/mo for bumdled phone is stupid when other services are under $3/month with greater services. Drop the triple play service cramming to jack up the price. Lets face it, you use your smart phone even when at home to text, not a POTS phone on a cable VOIP connection. This little used service is there just to spread out the Internet cost. so internet seems cheaper. I would rather have cheap bandwidth than overpay for bumdled services

Don't watch passive pay TV? Why pay for it in a bundle. Bundling is to hide the feal price for broadband. Cost to provide basic VOIP is much less than advertised.
