    No Linux.
Right now there is, in my view, a major showstopper and that is the lack of a linux version of the server.
Right now you either has to install the full game or obtain a special server version from Westwood. But still on Windows. If they want this to catch on, they really need to port the server to Linux.

    Little Information.
The information for setting up a server is hard to come by. Granted, this is a new game, but if there is one thing that they should know by now by watching other popular games is that if it must survive they need a good batch of fast access servers available on the net. Making it Windows only and no really helpful information for people who wants to set up a server does not help them. In the real world, game admins does not have unlimited time to figure out how to setup a dedicated server that runs well. When your day is booked full with users screaming, the ones that screams for a c&c server will be but further down the queue because the time needed to satisfy them could(and will) be used to help 4 times as many.
There has also been some people running these server claiming that it uses a lot of bandwidth, a lot more than your everyday FPS, but I can't confirm this since the no Linux issue has prevented me from setting up servers for public use. I am sorry but there is no way that we are intalling Windows servers. The game servers many places does, for some reason, not get the attention and money they should so getting the hardware and software is a matter of begging for it, collecting bits and parts And with a non-exising budget the begging credits won't be used for Windows licences :-)

I have never really liked the idea that SNMP is available on some devices, like routers from the internet. Some ISPs i know install routers with SNMP enables from the internet, they setup a password but if you can bring it down without a password with some sort of overflow then we could get a lot of downtime.
Would it help to restrict the IP's that can connect to SNMP. Some devices supports this. I guess it depends on which level the hole is at.

BTW, did anyone see the beaten up Cisco router (that connects Patty and Selma to the net) with flies buzzing around it the the lastest ep of the Simpsons. :)

  21. Don't be sure that you can see it. on Is Comcast Intercepting Packets? · · Score: 2

I believe, as many other here, that they are doing transparent cache switching, which a lot of people are doing these days. The reason that you can see it, is that they have not configured their proxy and switch the "right" way. A proper cache and switch have functions to do ip spoofing so that it seems that the request is coming from you but it get intercepted by the switch and redirected to the cache. the target will then get your IP but the switch will make sure that the response gets to the cache instead.

So don't be so sure that you can see it if you are behind one. The problem is that you all are talking the application layer here but you will never be able to catch it viewing that.
Since a the switch they will be using can do switching on almost all layers, MAC adr, tcp request right up the top and do switching on urls.

Btw. this is not limited to http. anonymous ftp, and the most common streaming media protocols can be redirected the same way and cached also.
The difference with the streaming protocols is that the host server not always allows it. But if it does then the cache will report back to the streaming server how many clients it has behind it. If it's a live stream, the cache won't cache it but do a spliting of the screen. The host server should be able to view this as they have many connections on their server but low bandwidth usage.

Some of this about is not 100% correct but it would take hours to explain it all. And it's fun to play with.
