  1. Re:Problems: on What Needs Fixing In Linux · · Score: 5, Insightful

The idea that the purpose of Linux, and Open Source in general, is to beat Microsoft has done more damage to the movement than just about anything else. It forces people to think in terms of how to obtain market share rather than how to improve software and advance the cause of free software.

The biggest single advantage of the free software model is the ability to innovate quickly, because there are more people working on it, and those people have more freedom to tinker around without having to worry about being profitable this quarter. However, since the vast majority of people in the movement these days seem to be primarily concerned with copying Microsoft products in order to beat them at their own game, real innovation is being stifled.

The fact that most major Linux distributions come with a default desktop that mimics Windows in many ways is testament to this fact. It's time to face facts: For most people, it's never going to be the year of Linux on the desktop, and that shouldn't be regarded as a failure to anyone. The end goal of free software is not to defeat Microsoft. Free software is a goal in and of itself.

It's possible that with everyone scared about the economy these days, Google will finally do what every other company does and seek to monetize all of its offerings. If it has something that costs a lot of money without bringing any revenue in, that thing will be gone. Even Google will run out of cash eventually if it spends all its money supporting every dumb idea its employees come up with.

Agreed. I still think more could be done with the Star Trek universe in general, but they need to stop trying to squeeze more out of the original series. It has run its course, move on.

Of course, the same can be said of TNG, and nobody seems to want to even acknowledge the possibility of making movies from Enterprise, DS9 or Voyager, so the alternative would be to make an entirely new set of characters. There isn't anyone left in Hollywood with that kind of creative talent, so it looks like Star Trek as a franchise is screwed.

It's not that easy. Google has thousands of operatives whose only job is to make sure people only use the Google authorized for their location. The consequences of straying from your designated Google are swift and severe.

I was talking to a friend on the phone when we started talking about why Google would have all of these different pages for different countries, and we couldn't think of why. So, my friend decides to try a search result on Google US and then on Google Australia just to see if anything was different. He had barely hit enter on the Google Australia search when suddenly I heard glass breaking and what sounded like helicopters over the phone. My friend screamed, and the line went dead. No one has heard from him since.

I tried to do some investigating of my own, and hit Google Mexico from an Internet cafe. Luckily, when the Google operatives burst through the front windows and started shooting the place up, I was able to escape through the back door. They were able to follow me with Google Earth, but I managed to give them the slip when I accidentally fell through an open manhole.

I've been living in the sewers under the city ever since that day. I haven't dared try to contact anyone, for fear Google would find me. This is the first time I've even dared to try to connect to the 'net, and I can't stay long.

If they wanted to start another Trek franchise as a prequel to the originals that they could go 5 or 6 movies with without bumping into the stuff that's already been made, they should have based it on Star Trek: Enterprise.

I know that ST: Enterprise is almost Voyager-like in that a lot of people want to just forget it ever happened, but I thought it had a great deal of potential. Having movies based on it would be great. I thought the series really captured the naivete and hopefulness of a crew exploring far beyond what man was capable of before, and I think it would translate to the big screen very well.

Maybe it's because I've been watching a lot of ST: Enterprise reruns on the SciFi channel lately, but I really think they gave up on that whole concept way too soon. Heck, the original series had one fewer season than ST: Enterprise did, and it got 6 (6.5 if you count Generations) movies!

Right now, there's a ban on selling organs for donation in this country. However, bone marrow transplants are expensive. If the recipient could later be used as a donor, the ability to pay them for their marrow (thus allowing them to more easily pay for the original transplant) could really help move this thing along. Even if a marrow recipient is reluctant to donate his own marrow, if he had a very large medical bill and was offered money to donate, he would be much more likely to do so.

Of course, given the limited number of naturally HIV-immune people in existence today, it would drive up the price of a transplant in the short term as they demand high prices for their marrow, but in the long run it would even out as we create more HIV-immune people.

  23. Re:"Server" vs "Desktop" OS on OpenSolaris 2008.11 – Year of the Laptop? · · Score: 4, Insightful

The difference between a server OS and a desktop OS is not necessarily what they're capable of...most operating systems these days can serve as a halfway decent server or desktop system. The difference is really what each of them are optimized for.

A distribution or release that's designated as a "desktop OS" will tend to include a lot more software for that purpose, such as multiple desktop environments, 3D video drivers, drivers for various sound cards, calendar apps, word processors, and the like. It may also have a kernel optimized for those components.

A server OS, on the other hand, will likely be missing a lot of the eye candy, may not have any 3D or advanced sound drivers, and may be missing a bunch of the applications you would expect on a desktop machine. It may also come pre-installed with various server apps that would be of little use on a desktop machine, like a web or DNS server. Likewise, its kernel may be optimized for these server tasks.

For example, if you're building a desktop system, you might want something that will automatically install several desktop managers, the full suite of KDE and Gnome apps, etc on it. If you're looking for a server OS, such things are just a waste of space, and the installer adding them to your machine automatically is not desirable.
