Uhm... OK, and not so long ago the world was flat, the sound barrier was the fastest our aircraft could go, and some thought there were no planets around other stars. In addition they thought no other "earth" like planets after we found some.

Please, you extremist science types are just as bad as the extremist SF nut jobs. How often is something which was considered impossible by science later proved wrong? I know your response will be ... Oh but it MUST follow the KNOW rules of math/chemistry/physics/etc. Uhm yeah, and it probably will. There are still SO many things to be created, conceived and born through creative and often times WILD thoughts.

The point is the "KNOW" rules are just that, those which we KNOW of. Are they the ONLY rules that govern our universe? PROBABLY NOT!!! :)

So, go a head and keep your blinders on. Those of us who are not extremist science or extremist SF people will be the ones making discoveries your type will dispute even with the evidence waving in your face.

Man, I don't even care but has anyone PROVEN the "twin paradox"? I mean PROVEN with PHYSICAL example. Not to my knowledge. If we could get an administration that is focused on the IMPROVEMENT our country, we would be MUCH better off.

Once Japan is in space with a manufacturing facility it would take us an ENORMOUS amount of effort to even COMPETE. We will lose.

Who knows, maybe they could even produce better carbon fiber based technologies. The nanotube technologies (Bucky Ball based stuff) could "potentially" be produced easier and more effectively.

We just have to get the companies excited enough to produce a facility in space. This would push the space industries to make the "jump" between them a better idea.

The potential of this manufacturing process is ENORMOUS. From better and smaller CPU's to Fiber Optics, Insulations, Superior lenses, etc.

I was reading this article thinking about corporations setting up manufacturing plants in orbit around the planet. This is obviously well in to the future but the potential for these materials makes it worth while. In addition this would lead the US in the CORRECT direction. Expanding our future instead of the current narrow mindedness. It would push for better orbital space flight (more jobs). It would generate MORE technological break throughs as more people are in space figuring out new ideas and methods. (more jobs) The future would be SO much brighter for our country and economy if we would stop pissing and moaning about fossil fuels and "installing" democracy in other countries. F** them if they want to be run by a tyrant FINE... Let them. We need to focus on what is important for the US...

Sorry, got political there... The important thing is what would be done if we focused on technological break throughs coming from space.

I remember reading about crystals that were produced in space being more pure. They talked about how much it would do for our technology base... Imagine if we had focused on that 10 years ago. As more companies push for space it is only a matter of time before we have production facilities in space. It is just a matter taking the steps.

  6. Re:Thoughts about attraction... on Nerds Make Better Lovers · · Score: 1

Emotion is chemistry, nothing more nothing less. It is the biochemistry going on inside each and every one of us.

You proved it IS a choice by your #2. Logic, implies an intellectual choice. Emotion is biochemical "feeling", an emotional response is physical not intellectual.

The human biochemistry is designed to perpetuate the species. "geeks" and "nerds" are a relatively new thing... We have achieved the level of advancement in our society that supports men (and women) who "normally" wouldn't have survived. So, for the most part geeks and in particular "nerds" would not have survived in the wild 6000 years ago.

Women (sorry gals) are more susceptible to the chemistry because their bodies go through biochemical changes like clockwork every 29 days or so. They are in tune with it. It sucks, for them, according to some of the "geekier" women I know, but they know it alters their personality and decisions. If you have EVER been with a woman long term and had children with them. Been there the entire time, you will experience first hand, just how POWERFUL, biochemistry is. My wife was a COMPLETELY different person, her decisions were different, her moods, there were many changes. When our first child arrived and she had gone through post partum depression afterwards, she was back to the woman I married. There were some permanent changes caused by the pregnancy but that is no different then any life changing event. Those (life changing events) often involve biochemistry as well, adrenaline, oxytosine, etc. An additional side note related to our blurb here... There are also new studies out of Great Britain and Europe that indicate that women use their sense of smell in choosing a mate more then initially thought. (more chemical input)

Personally, any article that uses Americans as an example for sociological studies is flawed from the word go. Our country values violence above anything else. Look at the aggressive stance we take on some many levels. A breast on TV should NOT be the scandal it was and a bullet going through the skull of a felon should not be viewed as normal and something during prime time.

Then again that last paragraph is MY personal opinion. As for the chemistry, there are many studies to back that up.

Personally, I can understand your bitterness for not being included in their (the women you refer to) choice of males. Then again the less you give a shit the more attractive you become... I don't understand it but there you go... It's chemistry, it defies logic (to a certain extend). :)

    Is Linux itself...

Joking aside, lets think about this.

People will USE what WORKS for them. (OR what is FORCED upon them)

I HAVE to use Fedora 2 on my laptop because we don't have the licenses to put something else. I find "most" of the features to be great and work well.

    BUT... (and that's a BIG but :)

o Windows File Share "browsing" barely works and when it does it's painful to use.
o Evolution needs to continue to evolve. (lots bugs that cause issues, mainly useability issues, in addition to the be-dreaded 'winmail.dat' problem)
o I STILL need to use IE to view some sites and do testing for the software products we produce. The Wine Install for FC2 does NOT work.
o Finally, drag and drop (DnD), cut/copy/paste (CCP) simply NEEDS to work correctly to be consider a viable desktop system. This is one of the primary value adds of a GUI.

I am using it, so I don't want to "hear/read" people bitching about me complaining as if I don't use it... I am using it and HAVE been using it for about a year now... Of course any chance I get to use XP or better yet 2000AS I do...

I have installed and USED CentOS 4.0 on several occassions and MAY use that on the laptop as it seems there are a number of issues Fixed on that version...

    The capabilities I LOVE...
o NOTHING beats the "look" of the fonts and windows. It is smooth, while I know Macs beat the pants off of everything when it comes to look. I hate/detest the "useability" of the Mac mouse and gui... She looks nice but she's no fun... Sorry about that Mac users, I truly have no intention of insulting Mac users. So, Linux is MUCH better then Windows in the looks department.
o The configurability of the desktop is nice.
o Even KDE is pretty good (widows file browsing works in KDE, not Gnome, very weird) but, as much as I complained about the file share browsing, if I'm GOING to use anything it will be Gnome because it simply "looks" better and is easier on my eyes.
o The ability to setup a "server" evironment on my laptop to do dev and debug on, is VERY GOOD!!! The BIGGEST reason I have not pushed for a license for my laptop is simply that I can recreate, for the most part, the servers that we use for our products right on my laptop.

So, that is my take... I will not get into arguements over this, unless someone has a REALLY valid point or useful information that could make Linux-on-my-laptop better for me...

This is my opinion and I don't care about yours UNLESS, you have helpful/construct point to bring up... I believe it is a waste of time, on both ends, to argue unless it is constructive...

SO, at long last, until Linux continues to evolve and change to the point of getting past a number of these desktop OS GUI issues (DnD, CCP, file share browse, smooth UI experience, etc.), it will never be considered a real and valid Windows desktop OS replacement.

I also know people that notice the minute details but are not even close when it comes to cognitive skills. I also find that the few gay men I know noticed more details and have mentioned issues with refresh rate then most heterosexual males. Maybe this is a macho thing but it is an observation, no more or less valid then yours.

I also think that you touched on the root of it. I do believe that some of our eyes functionality is based on differences. Meaning, we are looking for motion, much like a frog's eye. (doesn't see much unless it is moving (or is red)) I am NOT comparing our eyes to frogs. I am simply using their "motion sense" eyes as an example of eyes that see motion more so then images. Obviously, our eyes are FAR more complex, but I think there is still something to "motion sense" in our eyes.

They do have a great email client, I hear they have a calendar in the works, good contacts system and obviously search system, they are only a few features away from what she is talking about in the article. Combine that with a P2P system so your files are on your home computer, add those other apps she talks about and BAM!!! Something most everyone wants.
