As I recall the whole process of getting the Genesis and Sega CD to work together in parallel was a challenge to begin with because of different clock speeds between the two CPUs in each device.

For some reason this reminds me of a canadian census a few years back, around the time of that wonderful program the government was trying to developing to data mine Canadians. (does anyone remember what it was called?)

Anyway, as I owned farm land they gave me the extra-long form. They wanted to know everything -- my SIN, how much I made, my firearms, everything I planted, vehicles.. This went on for 5 pages.

I refused portions of it, including my SIN. Got a phone call from a snotty worker telling me that withholding information on a canadian census was illegal and I would be thrown in jail. I still refused.

Well I guess I wasn't the only one who refused. Anyway it sure is nice to see that the laws are stepping up to protect our privacy.

The school computers were all Apple IIs and for some reason they couldn't even get Paintshop to produce in color (even though they had color printers), so it always impressed the teachers when I used my C64 for their stupid book reports.

The only drawback to GEOS was the fact it ran entirely from those 5 1/4 disks. They'd take forver to load and everytime I loaded up GEOS I'd have to set the clock. Betcha one of those harddrive units for the 64 would have made wonders for GEOS.

She recently raised the "tape tax" as it has become known as to include Hard Drives, Flash Cards, etc. When people went to object we found that she had written it up so that we could protest, but it would do no good - the decision was already made. I was not happy at the time.

But reflecting on it, maybe she did know something the rest of us didn't know at the time. Then again this is Shelia Copps we're talking about. The second the labels complain, that will be the end of our loophole.

  14. Re:This is an interesting idea .. but.... on Satellite Driven Farming Equipment · · Score: 1

I DO know a far amount more about tractors and farming then you give me credit for, being a grain farmer who in fact does repair tractors as part of my operation. As I stated - it sounded like a good idea BUT this hasn't panned out. These computers in tractors are like the ones in your vehicle. It controls everything and they are a "black box" that can only be fixed by a "Programmer" with the right parts and a diagnostic computer. (they don't sell these kits or parts to us 'arrogant farmboys' I have tried to get them.)

Also, don't be so quick to pass out "arrogance" to people. This is a true story, that has been repeated over and over to many farmers in this area. Our closest repair centre is in fact that far away. We can't take them to there when the computer goes down, so they have to come to us.

Does this make them a first class idiot? No.

  16. This is an interesting idea .. but.... on Satellite Driven Farming Equipment · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have to say I think this is a pretty good idea... but...

Farm machinery and computers just don't mix. It sounded like a great idea when they started to put computers into tractors, but it has been nothing but a nightmare to farmers. Wires get too warm and fry or make contact all the time under the hood blowing out chips, dirt gets into the electronics themselves and causes them to quit working. When this happens, can Mr. Farmer fix it? No, it is like a modern vehicle. Mr. Farmer usually has to pay some programmer from 300KMs away to drive down and fix a $5 computer chip. People have lost days due to down time and at a critical time in the year this can mean tens of thousands of dollars a day, not to mention the cost of getting someone to fix it out to the tractor. The cost and problems these computerized tractors have is why no farmer considers it, or if they do they soon realize their mistake and trade the sucker off quick.

Sounds like a great idea until these automated tractors start shutting down and then you start to see the real cost of this venture. Leave the driving to the farmer. Technology still can't compete against the flesh and blood farmer.

  18. Jedi rights. on Canadian Census: 20,000 Jedi Worshippers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was listening to the radio the other day with a commentary by a radio host. He was referring to the fact that in this country, minority groups seem to have more rights and privledges then the rest of us. Examples that come to mind are the french. They are a big minority in Canada now ( think Chinese is now the second most populous language spoken here now), yet everything has to be labelled to satisfy french speakers. Native Americans have tax breaks, and so on.

If I was one of the Jedi religion (which I admit I labelled my religion as "none of your business") I would start making as much noise as these other minoity groups. At the very least you can get laws made to wear your uniform and a lightsaber to work.

That was a $200 drive.
