    Everything to do with a chemically induced feed back loop in the risk/reward part of the brain.

    can burn in hell as far as I'm concerned. Smokers have been kicked out of everywhere and it seems that
    it's now socially acceptable to harass us on the street!

    Most modern PC's and laptops will boot from a USB key.
    If you Buy a 1G+ USB key and copy over the Knoppix CD's bit's n Pieces
    you can then boot the stick using the ISOLINUX toolset and have room
    left over for a $HOME.

    I bought a 4GB stick and was hoping to get the DVD version on it but
    I was like 20MB short :(

    Still it's a great way to carry round your entire environment with you
    3GB is enough for a few docs and most of my e-mail :)

    I Agree with you on this.... The limpwristed, leftwing, tree hugging freaks will most certainly jump up and down and

    The argument will be the old, "Lets learn to take care of --insert favourite cause-- first before doing X"
    Problem is trying to teraform mars will probably teach us what we need to know to fix our own environment

    The other argument will be, "But we have no idea of how to do it". Fact is the only way to learn is to bloody well try!
    Thats how we learn, Try, fail, try again, fail again .... try, hey limited success this time!

    Problem is it's too bloody easy to pick holes in ANY idea to the point where nobody even gives it a go.
    That's just wrong. In this case mars is in all likely hood a dead rock. It's a perfect laboratory for
    planetary engineering. Sure let the archaeologists poke around, but lets face it, the chances of finding
    even fossil records of life on mars is a long shot. We can't not use it simply because sometime in the last 4billion years the MIGHT have been life there. /rant

    Ummm.... what planet are you from?
    The BIOS does NOT start the CPU.
    When a PC and fact most computers start, the reset pin will trigger the CPU
    to start executing code at a predetermined memory address. This address is usually hard coded
    into the CPU hardware. The address it loads and executes is usually the BIOS.

    When x86 CPU's boot they are very limited beasts. It's up the the BIOS code to figure out
    what exact model of CPU it is then enable all the neat extra features, like 32 or 64 bit modes
    SMP and other goodies.

    Comeon guys, this is basic stuff every geek should know.
    This is something that hasn't really changed for the last 20-40 years or so /me Very disappointed :(

    What is the RFID tags had no unique ID in them?
    Instead a Datablock describing, who made the item
    what raw products the item contains etc...

    Then you could build a 'cheap' sorting unit that recycling centers could
    use to sort the junk into the appropriate bins for melting back down into raw products

    Simple example...
    Glass here, Plastic here, Metals here, etc...

    MOST of the stuff that goes into landfills can be recycled one way or another.
    the rest in generally organic anyway so composting it isn't too hard.

    I believe that there is an outlook plugin on the way
    works with Kontact. Easy enough to get running.

    I got the server up and working in under 2 hours.
    Sent the next couple of days tweaking it and generally messing about :)

    alien is a great tool to be sure...
    But many kernel drivers need to be re-compiled against
    the currently installed kernels headers.

    This means picking apart the .rpm or .deb
    Fricking around with the source (If it's a binary blob you are usually SOL)
    compiling the modules and hope like hell it works :)

    It doesn't really matter WHICH distro goes on the machine.
    But once they start delivering Linux on Dell machines the
    ugly issue of available drivers hopefully goes away...

    If Dell were to certify that model xyz comes with Linux pre-installed
    then I would know that most if not all of the hardware in was supported!

    Yes, I will flatten the machine and install the Distro of MY choice.
    But at least I'll know that the hardware in the box will go.

    Once upon a time ago, in a land far away....
    Conquest was a cheapie DOS based VGA game based on the boardgame Risk.
    The number of Friday nights and beers lost to this game were unreal.
    Up to seven of us, sharing one PC for several hour straight.
    I had to replace the mouse every 2-3 months.

    Very simple game. Very simple game play.
    Many happy hours of shouting and cursing as someone destroyed your carefully built armies
    I think all the beer helped :)

    Because a you need a much bigger motor to drive a 100gr platter
    Lighter platter = smaller motor = lower power usage
    Less to do with platter friction than with the number/length
    of windings in the motor itself.

    If you are a lone female in the group all you need to do is to say
    "I'm off to the pub, who is going to join me?"

    If you are the lone male in the group, all you need to do is to say
    "I'm off to the pub, who is going to join me?"

    I've worked in many an IT department, most with a reasonably good male:female mix
    I've never seen a friendly offer of a few pints rejected, even when the person being
    invited didn't drink alcohol.

    The only thing to remember is not to try and hump their legs once you've had a few pints
    That will probably land you in trouble, or worse matrimony :)

    Just make sure it's a group thing.

    One IT shop I worked in, A female co-worker of mine was always instigating Friday night
    out at the pub. She always got a good crowd together, helped by the fact she was very attractive.
    Since she left Friday nights at the pub have never been the same :(

    Remember people on the whole are social animals and like to included in the group.
    Just try not to drool to much when making the invite :)

    Spies, cheats, scams it make the game just that little bit more interesting

    Anyone can set up a corporation or alliance.
    A while back during one war, a spy infiltrated our Corp.
    He flew with us for over 6 months, He became a close and trusted friend to many of us
    before cleaning out the Corporation lockers.

    Ahh well such is life :)

    Betrayal, Intrigue, injustice, Loyalty, Nobility
    These are things that the game mechanic pretty much leaves alone
    and good on them too... Make the game that much richer in terms
    of content, risks and rewards

    Maybe thats why most of the people I've meet in game tend to be older
    that what I suspect would the norm in most MMO's
    youngest pup I've met is 25, most of the people in our Corp are 30-40 years old

    There is a fair bit of CCP generated content...
    Missions, Mining, Research & development, Manufacturing and Complexes

    But by far the most interesting content us player generated
    There is plenty of scope for Traders, Mercs and Piracy
    The player generated 'content' is IMHO the more interesting side

    The wars, the pirates, the spies, the intrigue :)
    Every region outside of empire space has it's own history of alliances
    betrails, victories and defeats. This is history generated by players not CCP
    It helps that the eve universe is played on one game instance
    (Actually I believe there is Chinese server cluster now too)

    A couple of years ago friends of mine approached me with an investment proposition.
    Apparently they knew a guy who had invented a perpetual motion machine, it too used magnets
    They were very very exited, but when I told them that it's basicly impossible...
    They were heart broken. I suggested they look into Newtons laws etc, if they didn't
    believe me.

    As someone had already mentioned, If this thing really did work, this lot would already be rich.
    We wouldn't be reading about it in the economist or whatever, we would be reading about them on the front page
    of $NEW_PAPER.
    *sigh*
    This is what happens when you don't have a good basic science education in schools.

    Dreams are still free though :)
