The only idiots yet get these days smoking, are people who obviously don't care about their health at all.
Cheers mate... It's people like you who make me want to stub out my Cigarette out in your eyeball
(I don't consider cigarette smokers logical)
It's not logical it's an addiction. Nothing at all to do with higher brain function Everything to do with a chemically induced feed back loop in the risk/reward part of the brain.
I'm not looking for sympathy or understanding, but you and the pitchfork wielding mob you represent can burn in hell as far as I'm concerned. Smokers have been kicked out of everywhere and it seems that it's now socially acceptable to harass us on the street!
Buggerit... I'm off for a smoke to try and calm down Grrrr
Most modern PC's and laptops will boot from a USB key. If you Buy a 1G+ USB key and copy over the Knoppix CD's bit's n Pieces you can then boot the stick using the ISOLINUX toolset and have room left over for a $HOME.
I bought a 4GB stick and was hoping to get the DVD version on it but I was like 20MB short:(
Still it's a great way to carry round your entire environment with you 3GB is enough for a few docs and most of my e-mail:)
wait until someone starts moralising on the idea of just commandeering a whole planet for experimental purposes. I personally think that it's as good of a laboratory as any
I Agree with you on this.... The limpwristed, leftwing, tree hugging freaks will most certainly jump up and down and scream blue bloody murder if we tried.
The argument will be the old, "Lets learn to take care of --insert favourite cause-- first before doing X" Problem is trying to teraform mars will probably teach us what we need to know to fix our own environment
The other argument will be, "But we have no idea of how to do it". Fact is the only way to learn is to bloody well try! Thats how we learn, Try, fail, try again, fail again.... try, hey limited success this time!
Problem is it's too bloody easy to pick holes in ANY idea to the point where nobody even gives it a go. That's just wrong. In this case mars is in all likely hood a dead rock. It's a perfect laboratory for planetary engineering. Sure let the archaeologists poke around, but lets face it, the chances of finding even fossil records of life on mars is a long shot. We can't not use it simply because sometime in the last 4billion years the MIGHT have been life there./rant
This actually raises an interesting point.... That being, how many 11 year old kids you love to spend quality time playing with a parent? My guess is lots would.
Isn't it weird that kids are still getting quality time with parents online, just not their own.
Ummm.... what planet are you from? The BIOS does NOT start the CPU. When a PC and fact most computers start, the reset pin will trigger the CPU to start executing code at a predetermined memory address. This address is usually hard coded into the CPU hardware. The address it loads and executes is usually the BIOS.
When x86 CPU's boot they are very limited beasts. It's up the the BIOS code to figure out what exact model of CPU it is then enable all the neat extra features, like 32 or 64 bit modes SMP and other goodies.
Comeon guys, this is basic stuff every geek should know. This is something that hasn't really changed for the last 20-40 years or so/me Very disappointed:(
What is the RFID tags had no unique ID in them? Instead a Datablock describing, who made the item what raw products the item contains etc...
Then you could build a 'cheap' sorting unit that recycling centers could use to sort the junk into the appropriate bins for melting back down into raw products
Take a look at http://www.citadel.org/ It as group calendaring etc I believe that there is an outlook plugin on the way works with Kontact. Easy enough to get running.
I got the server up and working in under 2 hours. Sent the next couple of days tweaking it and generally messing about:)
Supports IMAP(s) POP3(s) SMTP(s) groupdav http(s) front end Also has a built in listserv
But just think of the poor bastard who's job it is to transcode Wham's greatest hits to Stone tablets armed with nothing but a BIG pile of stone tables and a drill press:)
alien is a great tool to be sure... But many kernel drivers need to be re-compiled against the currently installed kernels headers.
This means picking apart the.rpm or.deb Fricking around with the source (If it's a binary blob you are usually SOL) compiling the modules and hope like hell it works:)
It doesn't really matter WHICH distro goes on the machine. But once they start delivering Linux on Dell machines the ugly issue of available drivers hopefully goes away...
If Dell were to certify that model xyz comes with Linux pre-installed then I would know that most if not all of the hardware in was supported!
Yes, I will flatten the machine and install the Distro of MY choice. But at least I'll know that the hardware in the box will go.
Note to Dell etc... ------------------- PLEASE supply tar archives of your drivers and source! I'm sick to death of picking apart your bloody RPMs to get what I need:(
I loved that series. The only thing that really bugged me was that I could VERY easily believe that it was close to the truth about politics than anything I'd every seen.
Any Yanks reading this... Go out and buy the DVD's:)
Right now, generally speaking those with faith are thought of as uneducated and unenlightened
Hmmm... Might it have something to do with the extremist loonies Banging on about Intelligent design, Earth only 6000 years old world is really flat etc...
If the moderates keep quiet and only the nut cases get themselves heard... Just what do you think the wider public reaction is going to be?
I've seen just as many Pro religious comments on slashdot as anti. But in general the Atheists 'TEND' to be better behaved and not get into as many flame wars as the Pro crowd (Just my own observations here)
And if you think it easy being an Atheist in this day and age your dead wrong. I don't discuss my beliefs with friends and co-workers anymore... Got sick an tired of all the arguments and other crap that it generated. IMHO people should be free to believe whatever the hell they like. As long as they don't hurt anyone other than themselves:)
Once upon a time ago, in a land far away.... Conquest was a cheapie DOS based VGA game based on the boardgame Risk. The number of Friday nights and beers lost to this game were unreal. Up to seven of us, sharing one PC for several hour straight. I had to replace the mouse every 2-3 months.
Very simple game. Very simple game play. Many happy hours of shouting and cursing as someone destroyed your carefully built armies I think all the beer helped:)

Just make sure it's a group thing.

It was on the good ship Venus
By Christ, you should've seen us
The figurehead was a whore in bed
And the mast, was a mammoth penis
The captain of this lugger
He was a dirty f**ker
He wasn't fit to shovel shit
From one place to another
Chorus:
Friggin' in the rigging
Friggin' in the rigging
Friggin' in the rigging
There was f*** all else to do
The captain's name was Morgan
By Christ, he was a gorgon
Ten times a day sweet tunes he'd play on his f***ing organ
The first mate's name was Cooper
By Christ he was a trooper.
He jerked and jerked until he worked
Himself into a stupor
Chorus.......
Hold on give it some bollocks,bollocks,bollocks....
The second mate was Andy
By Christ, he had a dandy
Till they crushed his cock on a jagged rock
For cumming in the brandy
The cabin boy was Kipper
He was a f***ing nipper
He stuffed his ass with a broken glass
And circumcised the skipper
Chorus........
The Captain's wife was Mabel
To f*** she was not able
So the dirty shits, they nailed her tits
Across the bar room table
The Captain had a daughter
Who fell in deep sea water
And invited squeals and milk and eels
Had found her sexual quarters
Friggin' in the rigging
Friggin' in the rigging
Friggin' in the rigging
There was f**k all else to do..
